Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@Ninopedia‌ I’m rethinking some of my essays too… ugh…

Yes, I think it’s a good sign @calliemoon11‌! If they wanted to see if you improved senior year they could have just deferred you and waited for the Midyear report. Haha, I almost wish they had asked me for my grades; I just had the best quarter out of my entire high school career!

Edit: is your high school on the quarter or semester or I guess even the trimester system?

@Ninopedia‌ @WooTheDay‌ When working on my other supplements over the last week, I wrote an essay that I’m now thinking might have been better…ahhh. D:

@collegeapps2k14‌ Quarter system! First quarter literally ended a week ago, so it was kind of scary getting that e-mail just a few days after grades came out. Thanks, I’m holding onto hope!

Just curious, are any of you all applying with an interest in English? I’m deeply interested in writing, but I’m thinking about a joint-concentration in English and Economics as I do want to pursue business in the future…wondering if anyone else has experienced the same dilemma of being into English but wanting to pursue a major with more job possibilities?

@soccerlover17‌ You just described me! :slight_smile: What type of writing do you like to do?

If anyone wants to have a read of my essays, please feel free to PM me! An honest critique will help me out a lot for my regular decision apps.

If I’m not mistaken, we don’t have to declare our major in the first year do we?
I was thinking of philosophy… It’s not 100% though…
Anyone else considering philosophy?

@PcollegegirlP‌: nope, I believe that you do not declare your major until the end of your freshman year!

@calliemoon11 all types! I don’t participate in any creative writing stuff at school, but I write for the school paper and I do enjoy letting loose and nailing whatever creative writing assignments we get in English haha. what about you?

@frozens‌ thanks :)

Harvard’s Thanksgiving Recess is from Nov 26 until Nov 30. I would assume committee meetings begin December 1st then.

@soccerlover17‌ I also write for my school paper! I do some journalism and PR, but my first love is creative writing, with a focus on novel writing. Yay, I’m happy to meet more writers on here!

@calliemoon sounds like you’re a lot more developed than I am then! xD …I’ve just always found writing as something I’m solid at, just like a nice bonus kind of thing. People wonder why I would possibly want to do an English major, but writing is so important for everything!! People need to figure that out :smiley:

@soccerlover17‌ Nooo, it’s just something I’m really passionate about! Yes, I completely agree with you. Writing is not just self-expression, but history, sociology, psychology, politics, journalism…I could go on forever!

Okay so I’m a bit confused. The section on the status portal for uploading materials… if we want to submit a recommendation from lab mentor or lab graduate student you worked with, do we submit it here or do we invite them through common app and then they submit it there? I am not too sure how they want to submit it under “miscellaneous” part. I just get the word document file from them?

Had my interview with an alumni just now…
It lasted a little less than an hour, and I think its okay, but don’t feel too great about it.
She asked me if I thought I would get into Harvard at the end… I was kinda caught by surprise because I didn’t know how to answer lol did anyone else get this question?

Dang, this post scared me:

What on earth did this guy do wrong…?

@Karabekian‌ His essays could have flopped? He’s from a competitive state (by the looks of things)? His research and objective stats were really strong though, I must say…

@Karabekian‌ My guess is that the applicant bragged about his accomplishments, rather than maintaining a humble perspective. If you come off as a braggart, Harvard is one of those schools that would instantly reject you.

@WooTheDay I agree. I think his essays were probably his weak point. I don’t know if he saw his recs, but it’s also possible that his teachers wrote something negative about him. My college counselor said he wrote a negative rec once for a really smart girl because her personality wasn’t too great.
