Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@frozens‌ awesome! Yes I also think languages are fascinating, haha. Do you know about any extracurricular activities you might want to pursue (or continue pursuing) at college? For me - I really want to continue acapella practices and look into some cooking classes. Anyone else here interested in languages / acapella / cooking?

@frozens‌ @theluckylinguist‌ Are you guys interested in studying the cultural aspects of the nations that speak the languages that you want to study? I would love to minor in latin american or middle eastern studies.

@theluckylinguist‌: I definitely want to join the newspaper without a doubt. I do journalism at school right now and I absolutely adore it.I also cannot cook at all, so I’m very jealous of people who can because that’s such a great skill to have. Oh, and I do a lot of politics-related ECs so I want to continue that. The fact that Harvard has an amazing politically active student body is a huge plus and one of the (many) reasons I’m applying. Unfortunately, I am not even slightly artistically inclined so I’d be awful at a cappella, but I look forward to attending concerts :)

@knoxclark3‌: Definitely! I’m actually Middle Eastern and I’m potentially interested in doing something related to Middle Eastern politics (i.e. diplomacy, or perhaps working as an adviser on policy). I’d love to study the region from an intellectual standpoint and definitely plan on taking some classes on it regardless of where I end up.

Hello Messieurs et Mesdames, I am from Paris, France and I plan on applying to Harvard EA. You might think that I am eating a croissant right now. Sadly that is not the case, because the boulangeries are closed. Anyhow, nice to meet you all !

@knoxclark3‌ Absolutely! Studying a language is so much more than learning grammar and syntax. I think that you’ve also got to look into the culture behind it, otherwise you’d be missing a huge part of the learning experience. For me, I love looking into a culture’s arts, especially their cuisine and music, and I’m lucky to have friends who introduced me to both (ex. K-Pop and H-Mart).

@frozens‌ you’ve got a lot of ambitions! you seem like a very driven person. Sorry to hear about your lack of artistic-ness, haha. But I hope that you’ll find your niche at whatever college you end up at!

@arielle17‌ Bienvenue à la groupe de parole! Wish you the best of luck with the application process!

Here’s a random question for everyone to keep this thread alive: what are all your future ambitions? While college is definitely a big part of my future plans, I’m really talking about dream jobs and aspirations. What are you all looking to do after college?

@theluckylinguist Thank you so much !! You too ! And I wish you a lot of luck with your ‘linguistic endeavor’. If you need any help in French, I would be more than happy to help  personnally I have many dream jobs - but I can’t choose my favorite : movie director or actress or artist or person who organizes exhibits in museums (that’s a long list :p) What about you ? I guess it’s probably in relation with languages !

@arielle17‌ Merci beaucoup! And thanks for the offer for French help, but I was lucky enough to be born into a francophone home (je suis haitienne) so I’ve had my fair share of speaking French, haha. And you’re right - my dream job is in relation with languages! In the future, I hope to work for the US department of state to become a diplomat or FSO (foreign service officer) or to just work in translation.
And since you’re applying to Harvard, I bet that you already know that Boston/Cambridge is close to lots of museums, so that’s definitely something you’d be able to explore here! Have you been to Boston before?

@theluckylinguist‌ The more I think about it, I will probably double major in the social sciences and the natural sciences. Right now I’m shooting for a political science major (I guess Harvard calls it government) and a major in Biology so I leave the door open for a pre med track. I really like both a lot, and my resume thus far looks like it fits this. In case you’re interested in seeing my profile:

Appreciate your feedback, and best of luck in applying!

Here is my prospective profile:

Didn’t get many chances on it ;__;.

@HobbitTon‌ I honestly wouldn’t worry about chances too much - a lot of times people on here can be really rude. And most of the time - the people chancing you haven’t had any experience whatsoever in admissions! Your chances really just rely on your strengths, not how random people here interpret them. Don’t sweat it too much!

@235423‌ Wow you’ve got your work cut out for you!! Are you going to be applying to all the ivy’s and tufts? Or were you just asking for a chance? In either case, it seems like you’ve got really strong stats - (stronger than mine :P). But yeah, best of luck to you too!

@theluckylinguist Wow that is a great dream job  Yup, the thing is, I love art so much that I could not picture myself living in the middle of nowhere : I have to be next to a big city - Boston/New York are my dream cities (that’s why I am also applying to Columbia in RD). I have been to Boston Logan Airport for a few hours, but I didn’t get to visit the city (what a shame!!) Where else are you applying to ?

Is AP Scholar/ AP Scholar with Distinction/ National AP Scholar worth putting in the 5 honors? Or can that just be inferred from our AP scores?

and @HobbitTon how on earth did you get the connections/opportunities to do TEDx talk stuff? Impressive!

And guys, what are your reasons for applying to Harvard SCEA rather than Yale, Stanford, Princeton, or some other school that offers the same experience?

@Karabekian, I’m pretty well-regarded in the nonprofit sphere for the model I developed surrounding youth engagement (a top-down model, I can talk about it forever lol.) One thing leads to another, and I’m traveling around the world speaking. I’m very fortunate and lucky.

@arielle17‌ I agree, big cities tend to offer the best experiences by offering more opportunities for college students. I’m lucky enough to live here in MA, and only 20 minutes away from Boston too! (I really could never understand why so many of my friends were looking to go to places up in Vermont, Maine, etc. for college when we’ve got the best right here… it truly boggles my mind). I really have no interest in leaving Massachusetts for those reasons, which is why I’m only applying to colleges here in MA. Besides Harvard, I’m also applying to BU, Brandeis, Gordon College, Northeastern, Tufts, and Wellesley College.

But being from France, I bet you’ve got your fair share of arts culture, right? What’s that like? I’ve never been to France (but I want to go so badly!) so I wouldn’t know, but I can only imagine! Are you applying to other places in Europe, or are you only applying to schools in the U.S.?

I’m sorry that you weren’t able to explore the city!! I would definitely recommend it. Boston has tons of unique places and neighborhoods that really characterize it. It doesn’t matter where your interests are, there’s a place for everyone here. Hope that you’ll be able to visit soon!

@Karabekian‌ Honestly, I don’t have any reason other than location. Massachusetts is a great state, and since I’m fortunate enough to live here, I really don’t see the need to apply out of state. What about you?

@theluckylinguist‌ Boston seems like the best city on earth. And MIT is too STEM-focused for me. However, I was debating for the longest time whether or not I want to apply to Yale scea.

Has anyone here thought about Yale?

Prospective prospective applicant here!, I’ll be following this thread bcus its very exciting. .

Can I ask an opinionated question: Is Harvard the only Ivy/Top school you guys are applying to? Is Harvard’s location (apart from the higher acceptance rate) a big part in choosing to go SCEA instead of say, like Yale as @Karabekian‌ mentioned? Or do you guys have other reasons? I’d love to hear them!

WAAHH!! It seems like last week I was a freshman, romanticizing the idea of going to college, and here I am about to apply.

Nice to meet y’all!

I waited a looong time before posting here, because I was still deciding upon which school(s) to apply to early. As someone whose passions/accomplishments (argh…hate talking in those terms D:) range from stem cell bio to social and international development, every other option felt like I was giving one part of myself up in order to overcultivate another. Harvard feels like the perfect place for someone whose interests are as bipolar as mine to thrive, so I ended up choosing to apply here SCEA in the end.

@Karabekian‌ Totally considered Yale ('twas my first love tbh); it seemed like a perfect place for global health, but I ended up choosing Harvard since it has so many post-grad opportunities and connections for social entrepreneurship.

Oh, and the increased admit rate certainly is certainly tempting  (I know, I know—“it’s because the most qualified kids are the ones applying early”. Let me wallow in some sense of false hope!)
