[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <$50,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not exactly “hook” by definition, but “woman in science” may have helped in some schools.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Schedule, APs, focused extracurriculars, essays.
[] Weaknesses: No outstanding national awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I feel very fortunate overall. I think being an immigrant and a QB finalist really helped me standout.

Rejected: Stanford
Waitlisted: MIT, Princeton

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone for making it through this process, and to the amazing schools you have gotten into. If you didn’t get in to your top school, don’t beat yourself up over it. As everyone else will tell you, this process can be very unpredictable and those who get in do not always know why. You will succeed anywhere you go if you take advantage of all the opportunities provided. To those who will be applying in the future: don’t obsess over one school and don’t stress out about this entire process more than you have to (I did a bit too much). Work hard on your applications, don’t leave them to the last minute and once those applications are out of your hands, let the chips fall where they may.

My son was deferred early action and accepted regular decision. Stats: 760 CR, 760 M, 720 W. Over 760 on 3 subject tests, 5 on all AP’s. He had 8 Varsity letters, and is an Eagle Scout. GPA 3.9.

I think that for him his essays and the fact that he attends a small high school where he formed strong relationships with teachers and his college counselor helped him. I am sure his guidance counselor rec and teacher rec’s where wonderful and very personalized.

Harvard is a difficult admit for anyone. Who knows what it is was that grabbed their attention? My advise is to apply broadly, focusing on a good safety school. Don’t get attached to any one school until the admissions decisions are in.

Decision: Accepted

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: research, essays, test scores, grades
[] Weaknesses: leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It’s the whole package, I don’t think there’s any specific reason to pinpoint.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Duke, JHU BME, UCs. Rejected - Yale.

[/ul]General Comments: I’m leaning Stanford, if anyone’s wondering…

I seriously dont understand how these admission officers think. So if you’re hispanic or african american with sat scores around low 2000s or high 1900, you get into pretty much most of the colleges you applied to. but if you’re white with sat scores in low 2000s, you get rejected by most of the colleges you applied to. how the hell is that fair? I’ve been in America for only 4 years and managed to learn english from scratch and went into ap english and managed to become one of the top students, but just because I’m white with sat scores not as high as is expected from white people, I get rejected. how’s that fair? this whole college admissions process is messed up.

I would agree with you, in some respects. Although you must know that the main reason for why the admissions process works in this seemingly unfair and unscrupulous manner, is because they want ethnic diversity. And since minorities tend to have lower SAT scores etc., this is the result.

My friend got waitlisted. Top choice, but better than a rejection – She still has her other top choices – Stanford, MIT, Berkeley (OOS!! She’s brilliant I tell you!!) to choose from. This process is a crapshoot I tell you --Crazy process, y’all!

Decision: Accepted

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays (both were about turning a hard thing in my life into something that helps people now), my test scores, and the National Merit Finalist status
[] Weaknesses: My EC’s–not that much leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: God and my essay.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UW-Madison, UIUC, William and Mary, Tufts, Yale, Brown, Penn (all accepted. I was REALLY fortunate)

[/ul]General Comments:
Congrats to everyone who got in! You are all amazing! To everyone who didn’t get in: you are amazing too, and there are so many good colleges in the US that you will probably find one that makes you happy. I am so blessed by God and fortunate to even call myself a Harvard admit! I hope these stats help somebody.

anahit5, that seems a little unfair. I am black, have a 2200 SAT score and solid grades and recs but I was waitlisted. The people who got in earned their spots.

@anahit5
I agree that it is not entirely fair. You have accomplished a lot within these four years and that tells so much about your abilities. Keep it up and you can join your choice school for your graduate studies. Don’t let these “little gods” distract your future. Wish you all the best!

Don’t feel so bad. My URM child had 35 ACT/ GPA3.8/national merit finalist /plenty of long time and committed and leadership EC’s/ good recs did get into 5 of 7 schools including Ivy’s but not here…so they look for something other…or in addition to URM status.

Decision: Waitlisted

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: class load
[] Weaknesses: no significant awards
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:waitlisted probably because a kid from my school last year is doing exceptionally well at Harvard and he had the exact same resume as I did. Probably no other reason than that…
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UW-Madison

[/ul]General Comments: I sent in a letter of interest talking about my passion for economics and medicine, and how I want to change the healthcare industry. I can send you if you want to see it. Also sent a list of updates. My counselor sent an email on my behalf and got a response the next day (I suspect that’s a good thing?). Keeping my fingers crossed. Otherwise, I’ll be off to UW-Madison where I’ll be entering as a Junior. I have 91 credits locked in, so I’d technically be a senior… But you have to take a minimum of 60 credits AT madison to graduate so I guess I’d be a junior…

[] Additional Rec: My superintendent wrote a letter after I was waitlisted. It was amazing as well.
[li] Interview: Went well! My interviewer thought I was a great fit for Harvard and thought I sounded like a professor when we started talking about politics.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): New York (not the city)
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Rural public school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 120K-150K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I think Harvard considers me a first generation student. Both of my parents only went to community college.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Letters of recommendation, essays, extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my admissions counselor really liked me. I sent multiple e-mails and he interviewed me on the phone. Harvard was just a dream, but now it is going to be a reality! I really have no idea why Harvard accepted me to the class of 2017, but I am very grateful!!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UofR, Colgate, CWRU, Fordham, Cornell (HumEc), USC (deans)/rejected: Yale, Dartmouth, Stanford

[/ul]General Comments: The admissions process is crazy and I am so glad it is finally over. I’m currently going to Fordham, but as long as Harvard financial aid is good, I will be taking a gap year and then going there!

I cannot edit my post above, but there was a mistake and I was actually accepted to the class of 2016, not 2017!

I think this country is on the downward trajectory is because that we emphasize too much about political correctness; thus, we lack of courage to speak the truth. For those URM who gets lower academic credential and being accepted to Harvard, most of them fills the bucket of bottom 25%, many of them had the aspirations to become physicist, but they end up graduating with easier majors.

People sometimes do forget that with a lower GPA from Harvard (less than 3.0, bottom 25%), it is not easy to go to top graduate school, nor is it easy for these folks to compete against follow classmates in on-campus job interviews.

For admits with lower credentials, it maybe pleasant to get into Harvard, but you still have to get out.

There is always a difference between the gold plated product and pure gold, regardless how you package them.

Decision: Accepted

General Comments:

[ul]
[] I am pleased to be going to Brown University in the Fall of 2012.
[] There seems to be quite a bit of randomness in the evaluation process at schools where the acceptance rates are very low.
[li] I took all of the application essays very seriously because my lowest SAT score was in writing. Brown’s app was the one with the most essays which might be why Brown was the only Ivy (out of the seven that I applied to) that accepted me.[/li][/ul]</not>

Thanks for your comment it means so much to me now, cz im stressing over Harvard LOL
