[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere yet. The only other school I’m going to apply to now is Brown.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I’m incredibly happy. I refreshed my inbox for half an hour before I got my acceptance email. I totally thought I would get rejected; several of my well-qualified classmates (of whom many had legacy status) have been rejected from their first choice colleges, and I was really railing against the unfairness of the contemporary college admissions process. I still think it’s unfair; that said, I’m ecstatic at the same time. I’m lightheaded from joy and I’m losing my voice from victory whooping. Congratulations to everyone else who got in. To everyone who was deferred or rejected: you deserve to be celebrating too. Don’t despair - RD has yet to come.

I’ve been working on that Brown supplement; I think I’ll wait a few days now.

[] Weaknesses: My GPA wasn’t very high because there aren’t very many AP classes offered at my school. I also didn’t have any amazing stand-out factor like publishing research or whatever
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My grades, scores, and ecs were good enough to get me noticed but not enough to amaze Harvard and want to accept me right off the bat
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/li][/ul]General Comments:
The past few days, I’ve really been self-critical and over-analyzing every little thing about myself to the point where I was feeling VERY pessimistic and just ridiculous. Yeah, I’m kind of bummed that I didn’t get accepted but I’m also relieved I wasn’t rejected. To me, being deferred is also a good sign because it must mean I’m a competitive candidate for other ivy schools as well. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE! I love you all.

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Track for four years, with some honors (not recruited or anything though - I will not be running competitively in college). I was also president of my class, as well as a member of various other school organizations (Latin Club, peer mentors, etc.). I also write music reviews for a fairly well-known music blog. A few other smaller things (I can’t think very coherently)
[] Job/Work Experience: Private tutor for kids of all ages.
[] Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hours volunteering at a local hospital. 50+ hours of volunteering at the public library.
[] Summer Activities: Nothing major. Lots of running and reading and volunteering/working.
[] Essays: I feel these did it. Was very happy with both my Common App and Supplemental Essay. This is a huge part of the application that is in your control. Spend the summer perfecting the essay and TRY to have fun with it.
[] Teacher Recommendation: These were also crucial, I would think. Picked two teachers who really liked me in class, and they are both great writers. If you can get your two favorite teachers to write you recs like I did, go for it!
[] Counselor Rec: Probably generic.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: First interview went well, though it was brief and the interviewers asked a great deal about scores, stats, mile times (?!), etc. I was called in to a second interview in Cambridge with the senior admissions officer. This also went very well. So maybe that can add a bit of anecdotal evidence to the endless second interview debate!

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Fitzsimmons likes all-arounders!
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not applying anywhere else. Happily threw away my college admissions checklist. [/li][/ul]**General Comments: This is unreal! Very excited. I can’t wait to meet my classmates ! And I get to enjoy Christmas vacation, yes! For those who were unhappy with their news today, know that these things have a way of working themselves out. It’s not all about the school – it’s what you do when you get there. For future applicants nervously reading this thread: first off, don’t take these threads too seriously. They’re incredibly small sample sizes and admissions is very complex. Try to enjoy high school and do some (productive) things you enjoy. Write stellar essays. Prep for your SATs. Work hard! Thanks to everyone on CC who has helped me out! **

(1) Statewide Youth Advisory Council (Chair, 12; Vice-Chair, 11; co-authored legislation passed unanimously by state legislature; have done a lot of teen suicide prevention work with state government, testifying in front of committees, helping lead the state teen suicide prevention task force, etc.)
(2) Irish Dance (since 2nd grade)
(3) Speech and Debate (congressional debate national semifinalist)
(4) Student Council (President, 12; Treasurer, 10-11; Class Vice-President, 9)
(5) Band (French Horn, 4-11; 1st Chair; Section Leader; Assistant Conductor; said that I didn’t plan on doing band in college)
[] Job/Work Experience: Experimental Economics Research Design, Chapman University, Summer 2012
[] Volunteer/Community service: (mostly through youth advisory council–see above)
[] Summer Activities: Experimental Economics Research; (Irish dance and speech and debate carry into the Summer as well)
[] Essays: Common Application (7.5/10)–Not “pass around the office” good, but generally engaging and honest, about being an identical twin and being in tune with him; Supplemental (7.5/10)–More cut and dry than flowery, elaborating on a leadership experience when testifying in front of the legislature; both were not overly polished and somewhat last minute, but they were fairly decent.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I guess pretty dang good, apparently? I’ve not seen them, but one teacher actually offered to write one (I was surprised–I didn’t know teachers did that!), and the other I have an awesome relationship with!
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor and I are incredibly close, despite him having to service some 330 students, so my guesses is that it was pretty good!
[] Additional Rec: From our coordinator on the Youth Advisory Council, talking about leadership… A very good insight into personality!
[] Interview: He said it was “quite enjoyable.” I think it went well! Went thrity minutes longer than planned, a sign that we hit it off talking about a number of things.

[] Strengths: My test scores were definitely strong, and I think my extracurriculars were diverse and unique (there can’t be many Irish dancing politicians in the world…).
[] Weaknesses: Essays–not as good as they could’ve been.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: If I had to venture a guess, it was the Irish dance… It’s a lot rarer as an activity than most of the activities you stumble across. But hey, who knows?
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Alabama, accepted (only other school so far)[/li] [/ul]General Comments: I am so amazed and awestruck. I don’t think the acceptance has sunk in fully yet, but I am so amazed and excited!

I hardly knew about college admissions and the difficulty of it until junior year. I haven’t been planning for Harvard my whole life, and in a sense, I think that helped me. When I started activities (band, student council, Irish dance, political work), I started them because I thought they were fun. And in the end, I happened to be able to put those on my college applications. I did what I really loved and enjoyed, and for me, that has made this race to the top a lot less stressful.

I know that everyone here will find success, no matter where he or she ends up. Good luck, for those deferred! Good luck with applying to other schools, for those rejected! And to those accepted, see you soon!!!
