Official Harvard University 2017 SCEA Decisions Thread

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 800 CR, 780 M, 720 W
[] ACT: n/a
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 790 Chem, 780 Bio-E
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8-3.9 ish, school doesn’t calculate GPA on a 4.0 scale
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): no rankings at school at all
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Predicted 44, see below
[] Senior Year Course Load: Biology HL, Chemistry HL, English A Literature HL, Psychology HL, Mathematics SL, Mandarin B SL, TOK et al. IB stuff
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Invited Speaker at Stanford Conference count?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): NHS chapter founder, see below
[] Job/Work Experience: Research at City of Hope
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at hospitals/medical centers, Tutored quite a lot, built babysitting portal
[] Summer Activities: Research!
[] Essays: CommonApp one about interest in nature and science; supplement as a creative self-reflection
[] Teacher Recommendations: Both teachers (one English and one EE adviser) loved me, so I think they were >= good …
[] Counselor Rec: We talk a lot, and my school is small, so hopefully good.
[] Additional Rec: Research mentor; excellent, from what I saw.
[] Interview: No interview (is that a good or a bad thing in China?)
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): China
[] School Type: Private/International
[] Ethnicity: Chinese American
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: not sure, assuming 200,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not that I can think of; aside from cancer research, but that’s not really much
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Research experience (could get published, noted by mentor), essays, recommendations (?)
[] Weaknesses: Made a C and a couple of B’s a few years ago, no research/science competitions or publications (although that applies to virtually everyone, but …)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: P(X=1) = 0.08 … I don’t really know, crapshoot admissions is crapshoot. Could be that they’re hoping to see my GPA go up this semester, or that they’re waiting to see if I publish or can get my paper submitted.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UCL, Imperial College, St Andrews, KCL, MSU (safety), interview w/ Oxford (the one in England, not Georgia)[/li][/ul]General Comments: Meh, not too disappointed, but maybe that’s because I already have a few offers from UCAS. Kind of expected this, anyway. Hopefully it doesn’t mean that they were just too polite to turn me down the first round (because I’d prefer it if they just said no). Time to roll out those RD applications. :P

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 760 USH, 760 Chem
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): BC Calc, Chem, Stats, US Gov, Comparative Gov, Physics C Mechanics, Chinese, APUSH (5s), Biology (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, Published research paper in peer-reviewed journal, National AP Scholar
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Swimming (Team Captain, Oklahoma Senior Athlete Representative, Delegate to USAS National Convention, OK Board of Directors, School record holder, 2x State Champion, very committed and very time consuming)

[] Summer Activities: World Changers (construction volunteering for low income families), swimming 4 hours a day, biotechnological and biomedical research
[] Essays: Thought provoking and showed multiple sides of me. I would say 10/10 but apparently not
[] Teacher Recommendation: Read one and it was stellar 10/10. Didn’t read other but pretty sure it was at least 9/10
[] Counselor Rec: Don’t know but I’m the best student in the school
[] Additional Rec: Principal
[] Interview: Didn’t get one, maybe that’s why
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Oklahoma
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Uncompetitive Public High School
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $200,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Honestly I thought everything was strong, test scores, GPA, Rigor of Schedule, ECs, Essays, but idk, it’s Harvard
[] Weaknesses: Asian Male; I mean there’s only 194 spots for all the Asians in early action so it’s gonna be tough. Maybe I needed more ECs? Polish up essays more?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No idea, but I’m disappointed nonetheless
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere yet, but hopefully other top schools will accept me[/li][/ul]General Comments: Well, this sucks. I knew it wasn’t reasonable to expect an acceptance but I thought I had a decent chance. As I’m typing this I’m feeling really down, but I’m sure that’ll fade after a while.
Positive side: We still have a chance! 100 of us who were deferred will make it in come RD results. And it’ll still be tough, because everyone that was deferred was still very good. Good luck to all on other applications and congratulations to the acceptees!

[] Weaknesses: diverse interests (debate, science, sports)… probably wasn’t well focused enough? Who knows what the admission officers think!!! Also, lack of a very challenging courseload. Also, Asian who intends to go into engineering. Boring.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Boring.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I also included an art supplement, in an attempt to make myself stand out; being a self-taught artist, I really have no major awards/accomplishments, which probably made my supplement fall flat.
I slightly regret making bad course decisions and not challenging myself more.
I will send an update, with awards and accomplishments, but for now, I’m focusing on different schools. I’d be ecstatic to be accepted to Harvard, but I’d rather focus on the realistic choices now (was expecting deferral, to be honest; now I’m questioning why I even bothered applying early).

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t applied anywhere else. time for 20 million supplemental essays! although I’ll probably submit the couple w/out supplements this weekend.

[/ul]General Comments:
Was kind of expecting it, but disappointing nonetheless. I read the rest of this thread and tons of similarly qualified or better people were also deferred, so it is what it is I suppose. Stupid Harvard deferring pretty much everyone  aghh so many essays to do! Good luck to my fellow deferred people, and rejected people. We’ll all end up someone great :)

Do you guys think there is any chance that the students who got deferred will get in the second round?

Also, I read online that 3,196 students were deferred-- that is so many!

I was as well.

well apparently 100 people who were deferred last year got accepted RD. and similarly to this year, 2/3 of EA people were deferred (~2800 I believe). so less chance than the overall acceptance rate :(

So basically… Barely any of us are actually going to get in. Grrrreat

Man, admissions this year seem to be very erratic.
Not belittling those of you who got in (as you all deserve much adulation), but it’s disheartening to see such qualified people (such as luv2dance1995 for example) get deferred or even rejected.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Well-rounded?
[] Weaknesses: nothing special
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really think it was because everything I did was meaningful to me. I was very honest about who I was and what my goals/passions were and I think that was conveyed.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/li][/ul]General Comments: I will probably be in shock for the next month or so. For all those reading this, pleaaaaase understand that in order to get into such a wonderful institution, you do not have to have 5000 awards or a 5.0 gpa. Just be YOURSELF and work hard! congrats to all :)

sorry for being so vague. im veeeery tired and want to ge this out of the way :P

This happens every year, and the same comments are made. It’s not erratic; it’s the status quo.
