Essays: Common app 6/10, it was a really generic, bland research essay. It has since gotten somewhat better, and my biggest regret was not making the edits that I should have on time.
Supp essay 8/10. It was about dealing with change in life and figuring out how to tackle it: Talked about my struggles after Hurricane Katrina destroyed my home, integrating myself into a new society, the lessons that I learned and how it will prepare me for my future.

Teacher Recommendations: AP Chem teacher 10/10. It was the most motherly., personal thing ever: I absolutely loved it. APES teacher 10/10 probably. He loves me. AP Lang teacher 8/10. Fairly standard letter of rec, but very meaningful and personal first paragraph.
Counselor Rec: Probably very good. I submitted an additional rec with him as my “College admissions counselor”, and it was an amazing letter, too.
Additional Rec: 9/10. My research mentor and employer. Very, very good reviews.
Interview: 7/10. It was very casual and pleasant. We ended up talking for a good two hours, but it was mainly him telling stories. I felt like I responded very awkwardly to certain questions, which may have hurt me quite a bit.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: I am only applying to UChicago and Columbia
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Apply sideways, and convey your passion. Everything I did, I did for itself. I had no plans for US Colleges until this spring, so I did nothing just for Harvard.

Essays: One was serious and the other was more lighthearted. I tried to balance them out so admissions could develop a greater picture as to who I am. My short extracurricular was about tap-dancing and I get chills every time I read it!
Teacher Recommendations: Didn’t read them but one was from my Calc AB teacher and the other was from my APUSH teacher. I loved my APUSH teacher and I believe he wrote an excellent rec
Counselor Rec: So by serendipity, I had the opportunity to help a foreign exchange student when I went to visit my counselor in her office, and she told me she would write about it in the rec. I believe this short anecdote may have helped
Additional Rec: From the superintendent, as our families are friends. I didn’t read it but my parents did and they said it was good.
Interview: Lasted over an hour and fifteen minutes. It went all right! I was caught off guard when he asked me “What question do you want me to ask that I haven’t yet?” And I was STUPID and I said “Well, you haven’t asked about my weaknesses.” So we spent fifteen minutes talking about my weaknesses. Oops lol. But he loved the questions I asked him.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have no idea tbh, I just think I’m a well rounded student who didn’t try to impress the admissions office.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: N/A
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Just be your selves! seriously people after I saw my decision I couldn’t think about anything but the fact that colleges do take you for who you are! Just do your best and put everything you have into the process but always have in mind that even if you’re not accepted to your dream school, you’ll always find a place where you will do as good and even better than what you would’ve done in the first place.
Good luck everyone!

Summer Activities: Precalculus in summer of 2015 at local cc.
Essays: My common app was about my accomplishments in the context of my disadvantaged home life, all the while living in a mega-rich town. My Harvard supplement was all about my interest in politics!
Teacher Recommendations: I read the one from my APUSH teacher. It was a 10. The other one was probably also very strong. She is AP Lit so she writes a mean essay and was going to quote some of my essays.
Counselor Rec: They always write good recs because they want our school to gain esteem from kids going to good universities. It’s a big school so I’m not sure that it was unique.
Additional Rec:
Interview: It was amazing.

Projected Concentration: Government
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):

Reflection
Strengths: Interview, Essays, Recs, Transcript
Weaknesses: Class Rigor (did not take EVERY highest level class), Test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: This is very IMPORTANT. I sent my original test score of 30 to Harvard; that was the sept. test. I took October but it did not arrive until December 2nd and did not send until after that. My 32 may not have reached Harvard in time. I called and the woman on the phone said to put it in the supplementary materials section. She said just to write a note so I did that and also put a pdf version of my score breakdown (this was all unofficial). I have no idea how that impacted things.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Yale, Georgetown, Claremont McKenna, UC Berkeley, University of Virginia (EA), UCLA, USC, Chapman, UCI, Cal Poly SLO, UW

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, supplements
Weaknesses: GPA all the way. Freshman me ruined it.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Didn’t focus enough on my passion, mostly on my personal qualities. Also, too many amazing applicants; I can’t compete.

Strengths: Test scores, Grades, Recommendations

Weaknesses: Essays and extracurriculars
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I truly do think that my teacher recommendations played a huge role in my decision. Although I didn’t read them, I think those teachers believed they saw something special in me and I guess that’s what distinguished me in this large pool of incredible students.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: MIT, Stanford, GA Tech

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Today was a good day in most respects. Totally surreal in all aspects. Call this auspicious or superstitious, but upon restarting my phone, it randomly switched to a former screen background - a very positive and bright one. I had some of the most fun I’ve had in school in a long time. I got to spend some quality time with my best friend. And, of course, I got into Harvard - my reaction was totally unexpected. However, my friend got into an accident today; he’s fine; and that got me thinking. You can’t control what’s going to happen in the world around you. You simply have to try your hardest to make things happen and hope for the best. The decision you received from, let me remind you, one of the most difficult academic institutions to gain entrance into, is in many cases not a good judgement of your worth. Almost all of you on this thread are spectacular individuals and you would all thrive at any school regardless of whether it’s Harvard or not. To those deferred, best of luck on regular decisions. And congratulations to all those who made it in!! VERITAS!

I had to learn how to create and edit serious academic work for a publication setting.

Volunteer/Community Service: over 500 hours, huge part of my life
Summer Activities: Worked at a wolf sanctuary in Colorado for abandoned/abused wolves.
Essays: Common App-- was on my book donations project and how reading transformed my life. Supplemental-- How working with the abused wolves shaped my educational experience (moving from memorization to learning for the sake of learning)
Teacher Recommendations: one from AP Lang teacher, he’s fantastic and definitely the most difficult grader in the school. He really loved me and we bonded a lot, I transformed in his class from shy girl in the back to outgoing girl leading the discussion. APUSH and APCP teacher who saw my enthusiasm for politics and learning.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):

Listed on app:
Heart for Vietnam Children’s Initiative [10-12]: Founded and directed an unofficial non-profit organization with my dad that focuses on providing educational and nutritional resources, funding WASH construction, etc. for underprivileged schools in Vietnam. Over 2,000+ impacted in four Vietnamese cities
Baltimore Youth Project [11-12): Founded and directed an initiative/club that collaborates with Baltimore City schools and organizations to develop and provide workshops, curriculum, etc, specifically on nutrition and art.
Service [9-12]:
Research at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Urban Health Institute [11-12]: Researched the effects of low-income and food-insecure household environments on the brain and behavior (submitted to Intel). For UHI, I helped the director find local researchers at nearby universities in order to collaborate with them. My experience at Hopkins has been great, especially since the public health school is right across the street. The conferences there really sparked my interest in public health.
Work (paid) [9-12]: See job/work experience
Boy Scout since 6th grade: Eagle Scout, was an Assistant senior patrol leader, troop guide
Varsity Soccer [11-12]: Two year letterman, helped manage team. We were ranked #33 nationally for a while and #2 in state (#1 in state was also #1 nationally)
Job/Work Experience: I have been paid to tutor kids for test prep and also babysat my cousins since freshman year. I started a small lawn service business to raise money for HVCI.
Volunteer/Community Service: mentioned above there was a lot (1000+). Service really opened doors for me. That was what my essay was about. I have learned so much from service and it has shaped my life tremendously. I have assisted in filling cavities, taught classes in front of freshmen, served food, etc. All of these experiences helped me so much in finding my passion
Summer Activities: Habitat build in New Orleans after 9th grade, in eastern shore of Virginia (after 10th), visited Stanford, Boy Scout jamboree, volunteered at camp for city kids (after 9th grade)
Volunteered in a hospital pharmacy after 10th, took a public health class at Hopkins, raised money for HVCI, volunteered a lot, worked, took care of my mom, etc.
After 11th: research at hopkins, volunteered at a camp, finding partnerships for BYP, fundraised, etc.

Essays:
To be completely honest with you, I thought my essays were my weakest part especially since I had to edit them a few weeks later. These past few weeks I have been scrutinizing every single phrase, etc.
Common App: solid 8.5/10 I wrote about how I performed CPR on my mom in the middle of the night and took care of when she had a stroke and cancer. These experiences led me to help out at a food drive and then the rest is history. Service became very important to me and I wrote about how much it helped me understand my community and the world while pushing me to always be positive and grateful and a role model for others. The neighborhood I grew up in Baltimore is notorious for murders. My grandfather was shot when I was a child. My uncles were mugged several times and I faced a lot of bullying in school while caring for cousins who lived with me and my ill mother. Service helped me get through that. It was my solace to say the least.

Harvard extra-curricular: 8/10 I thought it was alright. Talked about HVCI but felt it was too detailed.
Harvard supplement: 7/10 Talked about my childhood battle with obesity, homer simpson, anthony bourdain, leftover quesadillas, but I felt it didn’t express my personality that well.

Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t read any of them, so i can’t say. My history teacher is the director of this honors program at my school and knows me very well and the work I have been doing. He has helped me a lot and I can always say or do anything with them (9.5/10).
My english teacher is very uncoventional and english has always been my weakest class, but I worked my butt off (8.5/10)
Third from retired math teacher: 7.5/10)

Counselor Rec: 10/10 she loved me even though I switched over at the end of last year.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: Idk tbh, i thought it was one of the weaker parts of my application even though we talked for nearly an hour and a half. We had very different personalities to say the least, but I learned a lot about Harvard.

Reflection
Strengths: EC’s (even though I didn’t have a four-year commitment for a lot of them but they showed my passion), Common app essay, some recs, test scores
Weaknesses: Supplement essays, didn’t send two SAT subject scores, lack of major awards, lack of 5’s on APs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my passion for Baltimore, children, and food showed through. I had personal struggles and talked about how they changed me and made me who I am today. My recs, even though I say they weren’t good, probably got me through as well.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: RD: USC, Duke, JHU, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford.
Applied: UMD, UCLA, Berkeley and UVA
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Just wanted to first say congrats to all who were accepted! I can’t wait to meet you one day. For those deferred, there is still a glimmer of hope. You have so much to offer and will be so happy in three months I can guarantee it. Never think of this as a dead end. I applied for Questbridge and was heartbroken to not be selected as a finalist. I had Stanford as my dream school for so long, but after Questbridge decisions, I rethought everything and saw that Harvard was the best option for me especially since I want to pursue public health studies. This is a hurdle to your road to success. Never give up, be yourself, love life, pray to God, and always be grateful and passionate. Being unique can overcome weaknesses in academics.

I always had hope, but there are so many people out there who deserve more this me. I just give thanks to God and my family. I hope this post can help someone along the way. Never feel discouraged. Be proud of yourself that’s all that matters!.

Weaknesses: asian male, lukewarm teacher recs?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Good stats + leadership and demonstrated passion in a few areas + decent essays… my counselor told me that my essays tended to be more analytical than personal… which I guess separated me from others?
Where else you are applying or have already applied: UCs, but that doesn’t matter anymore, Stanford Yale Princeton, I’m looking at for regular but who knows, I’m lazy
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Really double down on a few things that you love. Don’t waste your time w/ volunteer clubs like NHS, find a consistent volunteering commitment that you know you enjoy and that you can write about. GPA and SATs matter, but your ECs are what gets you in.

Reflection
Strengths: My Common App essay was freaking AMAZING. It was about being Ethiopian but not being recognized as that by everyone else (I’m just generically African-American to most people, and it’s even what I have to put on the dumb little census thing but I identify as Ethiopian). Also wrote about my sister and how screwed up she’s getting by white beauty standards. Other than that, I had really strong test scores, interesting extracurriculars, and lots of achievements in languages.
Weaknesses: Not enough APs, interview for sure (although I don’t think it matters much for Harvard), not many in-school extracurriculars/leadership positions, weak senior course load, also extracurriculars didn’t really match up with my projected major which probably looked really fishy
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: basically what I listed before, plus my uncommon major (which I wrote my supplement on) and the fact that my parents immigrated from Ethiopia and I was born in Germany. Diversity brownie points :-/ Also my school is like a feeder to Harvard so that definitely helped… take my profile with a grain of salt haha
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Already applied to BU, planning to apply to Yale and Northeastern. Dad still wants me to apply to Tufts and UPenn (but like why Dad I got into Harvard LOL)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: IT FEELS SO FREAKING GOOD. 3+ years of hard work finally paid off!! Now that I know I got in, I realize that I had REALLY REALLY high standards for myself. There’s no perfect applicant. My test scores/backstory were apparently enough to override my weak APs and senior schedule and interview and everything else I was worried about. Also, I really tried to put myself on that application. If they didn’t like me, then Harvard just wasn’t the school for me. Someone told me that last year and I’ve used it ever since, I think it’s really good advice.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE AND CONGRATS HARVARD CLASS OF 2020

Essays:
I did the best I could do and really poured my heart and why I do the things I do into it. I was hospitalized again during this time so I really did the “best” given my circumstances.
Teacher Recommendations:
1: 10/10 this teacher has known me for 5 years and sponsors many of my activities, all of his recommendations were what got me to the place I am today
2. 8-9/10 this teacher is the gifted facilitator at my school and I also knew her for 5 years but more extensively during the past 4 years. She didn’t teach me but knows of the EC’s I do when I ask for her help with humanitarian clubs or with my passion for writing/lit./english.
3. 7-8/10 this teacher I only got to know through being a part of the new accelerated sciences course at our school which is very rigorous. So for the most part, he only knew me for 2 years.
Counselor Rec:
9-10/10, she knows me very well as I ask her for permission everytime I do school events or plan fundraisers. Very immersed in my academic and EC life. Very glad for her support! Without her, I couldn’t do anything!
Additional Rec:

  1. 8/10 my youth coordinator that overlooked my humanitarian work with the FTC organization
  2. 8-9/10 an alumni (doctor) from the Shad Valley program I met in 2014, kept in touch for 2 years through interest in medicine and surgical trips.
    Interview:
10/10: I thought the interview went great! We had the same passions and interests! Asked me about current events that I was passionate about. Replied that I had some very good answers to reflective answers to very philosophical questions. Talked about my activities and my accomplishments. I loved that it was very casual and she was very open to having a conversation instead of a structured interview. Showed her my artwork that I submitted through the slideroom and she enjoyed it.

I hope to make a difference, and I think that I have, so I’m glad that I do the EC’s that I do because I love them. Do the things you love and what makes you happy. Don’t do things to get into university because it will be so devastating if you don’t get in if you did the things you forced yourself to do.
