Official Harvey Mudd College RD Decision Thread

Does HMC do affirmative action at all? I read somewhere that the acceptance rate for black people a couple years ago was like 20/70.

General Comments: I can’t wait to visit! I am so excited to see what it’s like :)

stressedIBgirl: Yes, it’s the Harvey S Mudd scholarship worth 10k. They got rid of the guidelines for qualification but if you meet the old qualifications, there is a good chance you’ll get it. I don’t have it with me at this moment.

maruhan2: Really, who?

Another waitlist. Prob won’t stay on.

Stats average/usual for accepted students

Wow, looks like they waitlisted 50% of applicants

Congrats to all those who were accepted!
and for those waitlisted or rejected, please don’t feel too bad, admissions has gotten more and more competitive, in fact here are some numbers the office emailed us:

“However, we also knew that there were concerns about the size of the incoming class,
and we knew that we had to do all that we could to make sure that we did not enroll beyond our target of 190 first-year students, ten students fewer than the goal in 2009.”

“This year we had a 15% increase in our applications, resulting in a record 2,718 applications.”

“This is all to say that we had the luxury and challenge of being very selective in our admission process this year, resulting in an overall admit rate of 23.4% in comparison to last year’s admit rate of 31.9%.”

“Of those who were ranked:
Valedictorian 27%
Salutatorian 8%
Top 10% of class 93%

Critical Reading
Middle 25%-75% 690-770

Son is now 2/5. Looks like it will be Georgia Tech.

got waitlisted…but stanford is taking me in. so its aaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllll good

my friend got into caltech, but got waitlisted in mudd

anyone find that interesting??

@maruhan2 - As I understand it, Caltech is more about raw brainpower than any of the others, and the others are more about fit.

i see…

anyways, that does disprove some people saying that harvey mudd is pretty easy to get into among the top tier schools

Accepted

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: WOOO HOOOO! First choice school! BUT, for you waitlisted people, he’s probably going to take a gap year. [/ul]
[/li]

Advice from a mom: for those who didn’t make it, you really really will be able to move on and make a successful life. This is NOT the end of the world. Whatever school you end up at will be lucky to have you and will benefit from your presence just as you will benefit from being there. Check out the link below.

[When Success Follows the College Rejection Letter - WSJ.com](<a href=“When Success Follows the College Rejection Letter - WSJ”>When Success Follows the College Rejection Letter - WSJ)

is that 637 accepts and unknown wait-lists, or 637 between the two

637 accepts without waitlisters probably

I wouldn’t be so sure… if 637 doesn’t include waitlist, then 637 - 59 = 578; 129/578 = expected matriculation rate of 22.3%, which seems low even for Mudd.

[]GPA: 8.8/11.0 (~3.2)

[/ul]Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Main essay was about how much trouble I went through to get into my AP Physics class, and how much of a dud decision that ended up being… HM essay was on how I’ve been in love with Harvey Mudd since 10th grade because it has the liberal arts and it has the ridiculous intellectualism (as in, hopefully people there will understand why I’m current obsessed with finding out if the curvature of an astroid is circular. My proof is half done, but looks to be no…)
[]Recs: Both v. good - I have a knack of finding the teachers who will write a really good rec if they like you (rather than the teachers who like you but write stupid recs anyway).
[]Supplementary Material: Fine arts, vocal and violin - 2 page musical resume (more complete than most vocal degree graduates) and a professional-quality audition tape.
[]Summer Activities: Administrative work, volunteering, German in Vienna, art classes, a math class at a local college.
[li]Hook (recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): I’m really, really cool? I dunno.
[/li]

[/ul]Personal[ul]
[]Location: Live in NYC, board in NH
[]High School Type: Private Boarding School
[]Ethnicity: White/Asian
[]Gender: Female

[/ul]Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: More music than you can shake a stick at. Used to do Science Olympiad and FPSP (I don’t have access to the programs anymore), figure skating, some art, a lot of volunteer work and professional administrative work.
[]Awards: Uh, National Latin Exam summa cum laude 2 years in a row, FPSP State Champions 4 years in a row, top medaller on my old SciOly team, a school Math Prize (for excellence in mathematics).
[]Why you think you were accepted: 1, My school has a very strong connection to HMC (as in, when I told my counsellor that I loved the school, she said, “Oh cool, I’m about to get a call from the president of HMC.”), so they know that I have a ridiculously difficult course load. Mine is a school where A students get Bs. 2, I used my essay to spin my senior fall C+ in physics as “I wanted to learn, not earn perfect grades” instead of “calculus prerequisites are there for a reason…”
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] I really do think my essay made my application - some of the evidence is the hand-written note directly referring to it on the bottom of my letter. I’m really glad, too, because TOP CHOICE.

For 2009-2010, 751 were admitted and 522 waitlisted. The yield of the common data set includes the ED kids (48 at Mudd for 2009-2010). So as interesting as the number 22.3 is, it isn’t a valid comparison because you can’t subtract out the ED from the RD.

I think that - - -now - - - before
Total Admit - - 637 - - - 751
Total Enroll - - - 188 - - - 207
(Early Dec - - - 59 - - - - 48 included in the official yield)
Waitlist - - - - - 522 - - - ?
Yield - - - - - - 29.5% - - 27.5%

With esquiar’s comments that they expected to use the waitlist and that they really really didn’t want to go over seems reasonable because if they get last year’s yield of 27.5% on their 637 kids, they will only get 175 enrollments. Very safe for an over-crowded school.

Although I’m still interested in the yield of 22.3 of RD students. The common data set ought to include that number!

Eeee. Okay, never mind me then!

One might expect yields to be even lower this year though… As for me, I applied to a lot of schools, and I’m sure a lot of other applicants did. I guess it just depends if they chose the people who really want to go there.

As for my advice, if you got accepted, don’t go! Then I can get in off the waitlist :)

**General Comments: I’m really surprised I got in. I didn’t feel as if I was qualified [crappy SAT II’s, no AMC or AIME, etc]. Good news for all you waitlisters, though: I don’t really feel like HMC is a good fit for me. Although I really want to go to a math/science focused school, I don’t feel as if I will be able to fit in socially and academically on campus. In addition, money is a big issue for me and my family most likely won’t be receiving much financial aid. But, Mudd IS paying for airfare to visit the campus (woo!), so who knows? I may have a change of heart. But most likely, one of you will be receiving my spot :-)) **
