Official HC Decision Thread

tothemaxbro,

That's not a bad package. I realize this is a very stressful time for all of you, but you should be very proud of your acceptance. Trying to tell my d the same thing. You are one of a very few to be accepted to a wonderful school. Also, remember, there is a chance of getting off the waitlist at BC but you have to stay patient and focused. Do not mean to lecture but hate to see such great kids unhappy. Oldhat under D's username.

what did u go for, i got waitlisted at BC too, but accepted pre med at HC. Sciences are a lot better at HC anyway, although i will admit, Boston is where its at

Poli-Sci. I'm really not sure where I'm going now though.

im between villanova and hc, i have no idea what im doing

ocmom, this is old hat. Just checking in to see how you are doing? My D got waitlisted at the same college my older D was waitlisted at last year!!! Probably not going to stay on list as she loved HC, but is waiting for one more college. Hope all is going well for you and your d. Let me know if you would like to talk.

Thanks for your concern Old hat. D has a good attitude. She's going to stay on the waitlist and see what happens. We'll probably send a deposit to Fairfield, just in case. Theirs is a $400 deposit! I hate to just throw that money away, if she's not going to go there. But I guess that's what we have to do.

Oc mom,

I am happy to hear that your daugther is dealing well. My d is on vacation with her grandma for a week, but she is still stressing on one more school. I know she will love HC if it does not happen at her other choice. Fairfield is a great school and I'm sure your daughter would love it also. Don't give up on the waitlist though as it can happen. Would be nice for two so cal girls to be able to fly together and have a lot in common. Keep in touch...Oldhat

TonyAP, I live about 15 mins. from Villanova. It's a very nice campus and a really good school. I was also admitted to both, along with a few other schools and it's looking a lot like I'm going to HC. The overall FinAid package was better, as I got a large scholarship and few loans/ no work study and it still came out to about 7k/year better than the next best private school offer.
As a comparison between both schools, Nova and HC are pretty similar, with the exception that one is in Worcester and one is just off the Philly Main Line. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the area, but 'Nova tries to sell itself as "close in proximity to Philadelphia". Well yes, it's close to "Philadephia", but "the city" is about 30 mins. up Lancaster Ave. and then antoher 15 (if you don't hit traffic) on the Schuylkill Expressway. In otherwords, atleast by drive time, its really not much closer to Philly as HC is to Boston. The only thing is that there is Public Transportation to downtown from Nova, I'm not sure if that is the case at HC.
Academically they are similar, with the exception that Nova does have an engineering school which was recently moved into a new building. If you compare "The College" at both, its really almost a draw.
Remember that you are comparing a "College" with a "University". Villanova is bigger, Holy Cross is smaller. Both are excellent, and in my case one came through with more money.

I dont know if i can agree with u Bro, i think HC and Nova are on two completely different levels. I've been to nova 3 times, stayed over with one of my friends, and i just feel like its a too much of a playground than a school. I like to have a great time, and i had a great time with the kids from Nova, but as a premed person, i dont think i could party all the time and skip class like a lot of those kids do. Also, Nova seems pretty group oriented, especially with the frats and soriorities.

You have to remember, a lot of schools are overated by US news and by the shear number of applicants. I thnk Nova is over rated, and my high school, which is really hot with Nova agrees too.

True, HC is just a college, but being a premed focus, it doesnt really matter. HC is a great stepping stone to Med school. Nova's acceptance rate is about 60% to med school, while HC is about 90% (and 100% to dental school). i'd say, if ur doing business or engineering, stick with Nova, because it has different undergraduate schools. But if ur doing anything in liberal arts, HC is probably the place to go.

As for the location, i am torn between Worcester and the Bronx where Fordham is. I know HC is a better school, but worcester is out there. Like Nova and philly, HC says its very accessible to boston, but im sure not many go there on the weekends. HC runs free shuttles about 2 times on friday and 3 times Saturday. When i went to Nova for a night we went to a soriority party at a bar in philly, so it wasnt a big deal to get to philly. I just have a philly that HC is a little more out there. Its not what i originally wanted, and its location is kind of drastic from the other schools i applied to, (NYU, fordham, nova, bc, gtown) but it might be my only option now...

Bro-- if u have any info u want to share with me about HC, i would really appreciate it, i dont know much about that school, as it was last on my list, all i know is that pre med is their thing.

Tony. I don't disagree at all with what you said. Nova is full of groups, and yes it is a very over-rated school. It is a good school, but only if you put an effort into it. My school is one of 2 area Augustinian schools, and so a large number of students from my school go to nova and I do go to parties there every once in a while.
As to HC, it has a better pre-med program than either of them, and I would say the campus is as good, if not better than both (though Nova is really nice)
When I visited HC, everyone was pretty friendly. HC does have a party scene, but no bigger than Nova, or Fordham where a friend of mine goes. Talking about proximity to major cities, I did look at Worcester/Boston PT. There is a train that goes from one to the other, but I suppose it has nothing to rival Fordham's proximity to downtown NY.
Actually Tony, HC was at the bottom of my list as well, but no one else offered anything close to what HC offered me, and I have a number of relatives that went there who are lobbying for me to go there. It's all a matter of personal preference.
