Thanks, @hopefulperson for the tag ! Good luck everyone !

Waitlisted. Will post stats when I get home. Oh well, Cornell it probably is! I have other good options so I’m not too sad. I do like Mudd, though.

Is it true they only accepted 200 people ?? Our local elementary schools are twice that !

No, they accept more than attend. I believe around 500/4000. They have to estimate how many will attend, that is their “yield”.

Parent here, son is chilling on the couch watching tv. I am more anxious than he is,haha.

is it a bad sign for my other schools (Duke, HYPS, UPenn, Columbia) if I got WL at HMC? Im an Asian male on the east coast with solid stats

son got in, his dream school , so happy for him. There’s hope for well rounded good students that don’t have the perfect stats.

Well, son did not take the required SAT subject tests, so that’s that. Best wishes to those who got accepted and waitlisted !

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2350 (750 CR, 800 M, 800 W)
ACT (breakdown): Didn’t take
SAT II: Math II 800, Chemistry 800, Molecular Biology 800

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): National AP Scholar, National Merit Semifinalist on app - now Finalist, state-wide math competition honorable mention, 1st place school science fair, school-wide top all-around student recognition thing

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Multiple leadership positions in each of All-State orchestra (9-10), All-Region orchestra (9-11), award-winning youth orchestra with large time commitment (9-11); 2nd chair first violin on youth orchestra’s national radio performance (9); top marks in state-wide music contest (9-10); 2nd place in state-wide special talent competition (10); Beta Club school chapter president (12); 2nd place HOSA state for Medical Spelling (11); NHS member (11-12)
Job/Work Experience: None on app
Volunteer/Community service: ~50 hours food bank (10); ~100+ hours hospital (11); some stuff with NHS that I didn’t list hours for specifically (11-12)
Summer Activities: Organic chemistry research through full-scholarship 5-week program (12); merit scholarship to invitation-only chamber music festival (11)
Essays:
-Common App: My life story told in a ~deep, creative, metaphorical~ way, turned out decently, 8/10 or so
-Why Mudd: Straightforward, tried to show my “personality”, 7-8/10
-Other: Really worked on this one, my personal philosophy on the humanity necessary in science, 9.5/10
Teacher Rec #1: AP chem teacher - likes me, known for writing good recs, 8.5-9/10
Teacher Rec #2: AP English Lang teacher - see above, likes me more than AP chem teacher does, 9/10
Counselor Rec: Due to my former counselor leaving I got a new counselor last minute, so 5-6/10, probably really generic
Additional Rec: Violin teacher sent in a rec - I actually teared up after reading it, 10+/10
Interview: Didn’t have one, oops
Additional material (abstracts/papers/other): Sent in abstract from summer program paper

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup
Intended Major: Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public magnet, <1000 students
Ethnicity: Korean-American
Gender: F
Income Bracket: ~120k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, I’m sure Mudd gets plenty of engineering girls

Reflection:
Strengths: Academics, test scores, essays, recs, focused ECs
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Violin?
Weaknesses: Basically no STEM-related ECs, no national/international violin achievement, lack of traditional “leadership” roles
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They had a lot of qualified applicants. I think it would’ve helped a lot had I been able to back up my violin stuff with an art supplement, but Mudd doesn’t allow those shrug
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
-Accepted: Cornell (likely), Wellesley (likely), UT Austin (accepted to Engineering Honors with scholarship and Plan II Honors)
-Deferred: Princeton SCEA
-Waitlisted: Case Western
-Rejected: Nowhere yet, thankfully, though I’m expecting quite a few rejections
-Waiting: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Stanford, Yale

General Comments & Advice:
Congrats to those who were accepted! For those who weren’t, there’ll be other amazing options. You worked hard, and it’ll show.

Congrats to your son, @cs4life‌ ! My son got waitlisted, but I don’t think he will opt to go on the list. Being waitlisted will mean no merit scholarship, so I think the road ends here.

And @RunningForLife‌ - my son got accepted to MIT last Saturday, so don’t lose hope! Totally unexpected after being deferred EA. You just never know how these things will turn out. But also remember, you can be successful at places other than the elite colleges.

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Korean
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $30,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Personal life circumstances, Questbridge?

Reflection:
Strengths: Scores were in range
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Overcoming personal hardship throughout my life
Weaknesses: Have not taken a physics course in high school!
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not taking physics?, Not enough enthusiasm for the school in my essays
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCI, UCSD. UCLA
Rejected: MIT

General Comments & Advice:: Really write awesome essays. I think my stats were fine, but I did not make myself seem like a good fit for the school

**Decision: Rejected **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): n/a
ACT (breakdown): 34C (can’t remember the individual scores tbh)
SAT II: 800 MII, 770 Chem
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): My school doesn’t do GPA (or weighted grades/traditional “Honors” classes), but my raw grades were probably A- average (with B+'s and flat A’s peppered throughout)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): neither
AP (place score in parenthesis): Comp Sci (5). our school doesn’t do AP courses either tbh; it is up to the student to self-register and self-study for the tests (but our college officers have supposedly sorted this out with the colleges themselves; hence, I don’t consider this a total weakness). Planning to take English Lit, BC Calc, and Chemistry.
IB (place score in parenthesis): nope.
Senior Year Course Load: independent study in Algorithms, the equivalent of BC Calc, Advanced Chemistry, Multivariable Calc (our school staggers the curricula of the two Calc classes so math nuts can take both concurrently), English, US History
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nope.
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): nah.

[ b]Subjective:[ /b]
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): Varsity Parlimentary Debate (4 yrs), Jazz Sax (4 yrs), Op-ed writer (4 yrs), Theatre (2 yrs), Math Club (3 yrs), and about 3-4 other things that I’m a bit too lazy to list
Job/Work Experience: Android App Dev Intern at a small tech startup (11/12th summer), IT Intern at a relatively big-name video game company (10th/11th summer). Both were unpaid tbh.
Volunteer/Community service: nada.
Summer Activities: internships. other than that, i just fucked around and read lit.
Essays: Common App essay was about how I turned my rather boring summer internship in 10th grade into a learning experience, Supp 1 was a straightforward “Why” essay, Supp 2 was about an invention or something (can’t remember tbh). Although I cannot objectively rank my essays, I thought I did very well on the Common App and “Why Mudd” essays; the other one was pretty shit tbh.
Teacher Rec #1: Haven’t read, though I’d imagine it’s unique. My English teacher from last year thought I was exceptionally bright but very, very lazy.
Teacher Rec #2: Haven’t read, though I’d imagine it’s flattering. I’m really close to my CS teacher, so I bet he put in a good word for me (though he’s not as strong of a writer as is the writer of rec 1).
Counselor Rec: Haven’t read, but I’d imagine it’s rather generic.
Additional Rec: nope.
Interview: nah.
Additional material (abstracts/papers/other): nope. probably should’ve sent them code or something tbh.

[ b]Other:[ /b]
Applied for Financial Aid?: no.
Intended Major: Computer Science (though I listed CS/Philosophy at every other school I applied to tbh; mudd obviously doesn’t offer Humanities majors/minors.)
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
School Type: Prep/Boarding (not gonna reveal where I go, but it’s one of those Andover/Exeter tier schools)
Ethnicity: Indian (yep…)
Gender: M
Income Bracket: high tier
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I wish.

[ b]Reflection:[ /b]
Strengths: According to teachers, I’m supposedly a strong writer, even for a prep school grad. EC’s are varied, job experiences are specialized.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: dunno. I think I tried to show how I have a considerable amount of hands-on technical knowledge in CS, in addition to the expected high-level theoretical knowledge (as evidenced by my independent study). Additionally, My “Why” essay was kinda focused on my interests outside of CS, to which my EC’s lend credence.
Weaknesses: My second essay was trash, my grades are pretty mediocre, I’m another goddamn Indian applying for CS, and I may have come across as someone who is more interested in a school with more Liberal Arts opportunities, which perhaps gave Mudd admissions people the idea that I belong at a more traditional Liberal Arts college, not a hardcore Engineering school.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See Above.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Waitlisted at UChicago, Bowdoin, Case Western (didn’t show interest, but that’s another story tbh.)

Rejected at Columbia ED.

I’m waiting on: Northwestern, NYU, JHU, the entire Ivy League (sans Princeton), UMich, Williams, UMass Amherst

[ b]General Comments & Advice:[ /b]
I fell out of interest with this school after applying, as I really don’t see myself doing hardcore engineering stuff throughout my undergrad. The rejection itself doesn’t mean much, but I’m really, really worried about the bloodbath coming next week. I’m doubting everything now; it’s going to be rough, I can tell.

**[ color=#FF0000]Decision: Rejected **[/color]

Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community service: BSA, Eagle Scout, lots of service w/in this organization
Summer Activities: Club Swimming
Essays: Probably could have been better, I did them really last minute.
Teacher Rec #1: Calc Teacher:very good, she liked me a lot, and the essay was well done.
Teacher Rec #2: Physics teacher: didn’t read it, but she liked me as well
Counselor Rec: Kinda knew her, but I’m not sure how good the letter was
Additional Rec: English teacher/Swim coach: didn’t read, but I assume it wasn’t a dissuasion about me.
Interview: Eh, it was my first. Probably didn’t express enough interest.
Additional material (abstracts/papers/other): n/a

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): CA
School Type: Suburb Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: $100,000-$120,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none really. I’m the first in my family to be born in America, but my parents were college educated.

Reflection:
Strengths: Not much I think, I wasn’t a very good candidate.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My extracurricular passions, and how much I enjoyed physics at school.
Weaknesses: Most of my app; Bad ACT/SAT/SAT II Math scores, not much engineering extracurriculars, etc.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really wasn’t that strong of an applicant, but I was hoping I would get in. I really liked Claremont and I am very sad I didn’t get in.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCSD, UC Irvine, SDSU. WL: none, Rejected: Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, and UCLA

General Comments & Advice:
Find good extracurriculars that show your passion. HMC loves passion about the subject, and I’m sure with a more compelling essay I might have had a better chance, but I don’t think my heart was in it. Obviously I was not meant to be accepted, so I will have to move on, but it is very disappointing and disheartening, especially since I have so few options now.

Good luck for future applicants!

D got in w CS major. Prior to learning the HM acceptance, she is already imagining going to Wellesley and cross reg at MIT for CS courses. Now she’s torn - HM or Wellesley (thinking of doing a dual degree with MIT). What you guys think?

**Decision: Accepted **

Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): VEX Robotics (Senior programmer, several world championship appearances), Canadian Army Cadets (like J.R.O.T.C), Film Club (short movie production unit), a few more minor leadership roles
Job/Work Experience: Freelance web design for a few genuine organizations, various CS side projects
Volunteer/Community service: A few events here and there. Helped train a guide dog puppy for a semester
Summer Activities: CS research program at UCSB
Essays:
Common App: Wrote about love of creation. I thought it was pretty good (8-9/10)
Why Mudd?: 9/10
Essay 2: I wrote about an idea I had, which tied in really well with the summer research project I did. 8/10
Teacher Rec #1: CS teacher and robotics coach. He really likes me, and he even went back and wrote a supplement about a side project I did.
Teacher Rec #2: Economics teacher. She likes me in general, and she writes a good number of recs, so I’m sure it was pretty good.
Counselor Rec: We got a new counselor this year, and we didn’t meet much, but she seemed to remember me and I felt that she “got” me, so I’d imagine it was quite good.
Additional Rec: The director of the summer research program I attended.
Interview: It was my first college interview, but I think it went rather well.
Additional material (abstracts/papers/other): I sent in the abstract to my research project, and a description of my various CS projects, including several websites and two published mobile games.

State (if domestic applicant): Colorado

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none really

**Reflection:[ /b]
Strengths: Demonstrated CS interest, interesting extracurricular (cadets), good recs and essays
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to sell myself as a “born creator,” and I talked a lot about cadets
Weaknesses: No incredible outside-of-school awards
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: see above
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted GA Tech, Wash U, and Rensselaer. Rejected MIT, waiting on Stanford, CMU, and Northwestern

**General Comments & Advice:[ /b]

This was my #1 choice school, and I think I am a great fit. I think that’s a big part of what got me in.

@Texasmom12

Congratulation that your son got into MIT.
MIT is my son’s dream school, but he was rejected.
And he was waitlisted by Harvey Mudd today.

After thinking about it…Literally what is the point of the waitlist? It’s just a glorified rejection IMO. The waitlist -> acceptance rate was 3.5% last year, which rivals HYPS RD rates, and on the letter it said that some years they accepted no one off the waitlist.

My son got in…totally unexpected!! Its a tough call between UCs and HMC. Unfortunately UCLA open house
and HMC admitted program fall on same day.

@StevenToCollege‌ - I am so sorry! This process is terrible. I am reading all these posts and seeing the dread for the coming week. A surprising trend I noted also is Case Western not outright accepting some of these great students.

I really think there is a lot of randomness to the selection process. You just have to be pleasantly surprised when one comes through. And also realize there are a lot of places your student can be successful. It really will work out.

MIT is full pay for us and my son has concerns about the rigor, so we are still waiting to see how next week goes.

It looks like HM’s wait list might be as large as the original accepted pool, from past years stats I found. About half offered to go on the list. Can’t hurt to opt on the list!

@TexasMom12: that’s a relief to hear, and congrats to your son! I do love Harvey Mudd, but at this point I’m just praying that being WL here doesn’t predict bad omens for the most selective schools on my list (esp. Stanford). Do you guys think it’s possible for HMC to waitlist someone b/c they aren’t sure if they would go? Very few people from my school apply (since we’re on the east coast probably) and the yield from my school is extremely low.
