Let’s talk about housing here! If you have any questions, comments or tips, post them here!
How does housing at UCI work? Does random selection usually turn out fine? Or would it be better to find roommates?
if I SIR around April 15th, will it be too late for my desired housing?
@ningve I think as long as you meet the deadline you should be fine. It takes up to 24 hours for the SIR to process though
So, I have a bit of confusion surrounding the roommate process and would greatly appreciate some help in clearing things up. From what I understand, you first submit your housing application before May 1st. Following that, you’re sent a housing contract in May, and that’s where you’ll indicate your hall and roommate preferences, correct?
If you are requesting to room with a specific roommate, how is that indicated on your housing contract? I understand there’s no guarantee, but it seems that most people are able to room with those they choose.
do you just wait for their email? what if you dont like the lease offer?
Can freshman live off campus?
The university will only offer freshman housing on campus. Last year was an anomaly. There was a higher than usual enrollment and some freshman were forced to live off campus.
My son wants to live off campus. Can he opt out of housing as a freshman?
I believe you are allowed to opt out of freshman housing.
Wait, so is housing a first come first serve thing? Because I haven’t turned in my SIR yet either (still deciding between UCI and UCSD lol)
If they are following the same protocol as last year, I believe housing assignments were not based on first come first serve. You should call housing to double check.
@sleeplessmom1 what are the housing assignments based on?
@riceball123 - For continuing students, housing is on a first come first serve basis.

"Offers will be made in application date/time order (according to applicant preferences) until all available spaces in the communities are filled. If we are not able to offer your highest ranked community, your second choice community will be offered (as long as space is available). If that community fills up, your third ranked community will be offered, etc. "
I am unclear of the process for new freshman, but I do recall that students with disabilities or special needs have their assignments done first. Completing the housing application by the date just guarantees that you have housing for the fall. Please call housing if you have further questions. 949-824-6811
Does anyone know what the best housing for transfers is?? I’ve heard either arroyo or Camino(expensive) were good.
Do I need to pay a housing fee once I SIR, and if so how much is it? I’m waitlisted at UCLA and UC Berkeley so I don’t want to spend a whole lot more plus the $250 deposit if I’m not going to end up going there.
@vallgall yea there’s a $20 processing fee
What is the likelihood of getting a single studio? Are those popular?
