You find out dorms sometime in August, but you won't know who your roommate is until the day you move in.

Just to check again (b/c I think someone already answered this), there are 2 freshmen to a room that is not separated by a wall, right? Won't that be a hassle b/c I am more of a nocturnal worker and I don’t want to have to change my routine to accommodate my roommate (i.e. with the lights, music, etc). Does this mean there is no privacy at all, you are just stuck in a big room with another person? Or am I getting this whole concept of dorms wrong…..

How was your freshman living experience?

Okay, I'm not at Stanford yet, but it's more like you're stuck in a small room with another person. ;) Like celestial said, they're good about matching roommates. Your working habits, sleeping habits, etc. will be considered when they're matching you up, so it shouldn't be like you have to completely change your lifestyle. You'll have to compromise a bit, but that's true for every college dorm room.

You could probably study in a library. Are there separate study rooms or something?

There are multiple places to study in a library, including study rooms (fit a small group of people), large open study areas, or areas with desks that have partitions so you sort of have private space.

Pyleela is right; when you fill out the roommate form, you give information about when you usually go to bed on weekdays and weekends, how neat/messy you are, what type of music you like, other general interests, and there's a place to write whatever else you think is relevant, or anything you want to express about yourself.

You'll find out your house in the summer. From that information you can surmise certain details about your room:
If you're in Roble, you'll have a 3-room quad.
Branner, you'll have a two-room triple.
Frosoco, you may get a 2-room double, or maybe a 1-room double.
West lag, a tiny 1-room double.
Anywhere else, a pretty decent-sized 1-room double.

You'll find out your roommate when you check into your dorm on day one and find their name on your door. And you can't request a roommate.

Doesn' that seem a little ....i cant think of the word..lol..but you only find out your roomate the day..wat about assigning who brings this and that..or making connections with them before you move it

It always works out :) I was skeptical too, but I surprised at how things fell into place. I'd probably not advise buying something like a fridge before you go, just in case you both bring one. But other than that, it'll be a nice surprise.

ok...ill trust you celestial.

Anyone else have an experience to share? =]

Yeah, don't bring stuff like fridges and TV's, unless maybe you already have one lying around and live nearby or something. You can take care of all that stuff later.

Word. All of you, quit worryin' and enjoy the ride, yo. It'll work out. :-)

Hi everyone! I'm new to the CC and I'm an early admit for Stanford 2011!!!!!!!! :fanfare: Anyway, I have a question regarding the themed dorms, and more specifically Ujamaa. As a freshman in that residence hall, are you likely to get a 1 room double, or something like a 2 room triple or 3 room quad!!! I'm just curious!!! :)

I don't know about Uj, but I just wanted to say welcome!

sirisuly wat u could do is get a facebook..find some ppl that live in Uj and directly ask them..Congrats to..cant wait to meet u!

Thanks for the welcome celestial605 and lookatme89!!! I look forward to hopefully meeting you guys at admit weekend :)

Hey SIRIUSLYsaucy422! I live in Uj so I can help you out :D
If your a freshman in Uj you're going to get a one room double-no question about it. The room is going to be small too but it will have a sink! Uj is a nice place to live even though its rooms are small so don't be too quick to take it off of your list!

Hahaha thank you superwizard!! I don't think the dorm situation could scare me away; I can't wait to check it out during AW!!!! I just have a thing against bunkbeds......bad childhood memory :shudders: :( So I avoid them if I can! :)

You don't need to bunk beds. Very few people actually bunk their beds!

Lofted beds are a great space saver though... .you can sleep up top and then put a couch underneath or something.
