Official Housing Thread...

I figured it would help not only me, but offers if some current students could describe some of our housing opinions. Here's all the choices listed on the NU website (also would be good to know if a dorm is particularly loud, quiet, party-dorm, etc.):

As a side, I'm majoring in Materials Science/Engineering, so the majority of my classes will be up north. Right now, I want a moderate party dorm up north, that is more mellow on the weekdays, not a party every night (24x7), but one that will have some on the weekends. Bobb? Kemper? Elder? Help me with my list of 5!

I'm thinking about staying in Elder or Sargent next year. I'll be a BME, so staying north would probably be the best. I think I'd like Elder because it's all freshman and it'll be easier to form social groups when we're all living together at first when we don't know each other. How is the atmosphere at Elder, and are the rooms and food sufficient for comfortable living?

Bobb is the party dorm, if you dont want party 24/7, dont go to bobb. mcculloch might be a better fit.

A lot of people i talked to dont recommend elder BECAUSE its all freshman. Unless you are planning ot live off campus or rush after teh first year, you are going to want a community that will last more than one year, which cant happen in elder because you are forced to move out. Also, living with upperclassmen is cool because theyll show you around, dont be afraid that theyre going to look at you adn laugh that you are new, they are accustomed to seeing freshman, and will get along with you just fine.

Hi!

I'm a junior in Medill and it sounds like you all have the right idea regarding dorms, if you want to an opinion from a current student. I lived in Allison my freshman year and I loved it because it was South campus and a big, social dorm without being too crazy for me. I do recommend paying attention to the North/South thing because it can be brutal walking to Tech from 1835 Hinman each day in the winter because you're an Industrial Engineering major or whatever. And size--I recommend looking at medium- to large-sized dorms because there's no better way to meet people easily. And big doesn't equal impersonal; Residential Colleges like, say, Willard, do a TON of things together because you can get points towards living there again the following year.

But if you want to know specifics about certain dorms you're looking in I definitely encourage you to ask me or one of the other NUers on here.

I want a more social dorm, preferably mid-large in size. I'm majoring in Political Science, so those classes will be down South, but I'm willing to sacrifice for a good time. Here is my list, in some sort of order:
Allison
Willard
Bobb
McCulloch
Elder

If anyone has any suggestions for me, definetly post them because my list is not at all set. Otherwise, post your own list and your rationale.

thats my list exactly.... well in a different order though
elder, allison, willard, mcculloch, bobb

browski - Freshmen can't live in Kemper. If you don't want the place you live to be crazy/party all the time, I would not recommend Bobb. If you want a moderately party-ish dorm, I would probably go for McCulloch or Elder. McCulloch is connected to Bobb, but does not have the reputation for being quite as wild as Bobb. Elder is all-freshmen, and does have its fair share of parties, but it is not non-stop.

mw05 and deferred - Congratulations, you both have managed to pick out the 5 most popular dorms on campus. A few pointers: if you really want Willard, you probably need to put it as your first choice because it is the most-applied-to dorm on campus. Willard and Allison have a pretty similar crowd of people. Both are (I think) at least 30% sophomores. The people are what I would call "pretty normal," although there are many theater and journalism majors in both. Bobb and McCulloch are pretty similar as well. Bobb has a rep. for being The Party Dorm on campus, but the two are so close (geographically) that the same stuff goes on. Elder is an all-freshman dorm. I find the people at Elder to be extremely fun and nice, although they can def. party-hardy. Willard, Allison and Elder have their own dining halls - I think Bobb-McCulloch kids usually eat in Sargent.

Okay, time to go to class now, but if you have any questions, I'll try to answer them!

I had trouble coming up with this list because I'm so picky...anyways, this is mine:

1.)Slivka
2.)Lindengren
3.)1835 Hinman
4.)Foster-Walker Complex
5.)CCS

Any suggestions if I want quiet, anti-social housing (I like to be social, just like a quiet place to come back to).

any thoughts about jones?? i really liked the fact that they have a recording studio and prop room etc.. plus the lounges connecting different rooms kind of compensates for the small room sizes i guess. how social/antisocial is it?? is it a small or big dorm?? i'd like something with parties etc.
how popular is jones??

I'm with you, cabsoula. I'm interester in Jones, but am concerned the people there will be kinda "different". I plan to major in theatre, so it is my crowd, but I'm just concerned about how "weird" some of the people are. This is not to say that I'm not weird, I am. I think that's how we all got into NU - we each have our own unique, and sometimes, weird quirks that make us uniqe. My thing is if Jones would be a bit of an overload. Any experience w/ Jones and/or the people would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone have the link to the NU page that has the student rankings of the different houses and residential colleges?

what about 1835 Hinman?? am i sure to get in that if i cite it as a choice??? how is it (socially)??

Hello.... Can someone tell me which few dorms are relatively cleaner? Is Allison clean? Can Freshmen live in Foster Walker (they just offer singles only, right?) Anyone here knows anything about Ayers/Jones/Shepard? Is Shepard a really sought after dorm? and yes-how is 1835 Hinman - its cleaniness, social life, and FOOD.

THANKS!

hey I'm gonna be a Chemical Engineering Major. I want a quiet, relaxed dorm that's close to my classes and inexpensive. I'm leaning toward the all freshman dorm cuz it seems it would be the easiest way to make friends.

i need major help please.

I think one of these will be my first choice, but I know that the one that's not my first choice will not be in the cards for me, given the popularity of both places. Which one has a better social life as far as meeting people and parties are concerned?

wow thanks mw05!

There's also this link, which shows some different stuff.

Just remember that the DTECs are two years old, so take the comments with a grain of salt. (Allison no longer has mice, for example)

what's a good dorm in terms of size and social life on the north campus?

how do i find out which side of campus the majority of my classes are gonna be?
