Official IR Acceptances/Rejections thread

I'll start this off since I just submitted my apps right on time for the deadline.

Stats: 3.24 GPA (but most of my low grades were from freshman year), from NYU double majoring in politics and middle eastern studies with minor in Judaic studies. GRE - 720 V, 680 Q, 5.5 Writing. Study abroad in Morocco, 3 years of Arabic, proficient in Hebrew. 2 internships at different think tanks in washington dealing with foreign policy/national security. Wrote a few foreign policy articles for local newspapers.

Applying to:

Georgetown MSFS,
GWU Elliot School
American SIS

Considering applying to Denver, Monterey, Syracuse as backup but not sure if it worth the application fees.

Most of mine are going in today too. Ugh I've just been having some problems with recommenders not receiving their log in e-mails, soooo frustrating. Anyway Here are my stats
Graduated 2007 from a Top 15 school w/ 3.7 GPA and a degree in Writing and a minor in Classics. Studied abroad in Italy for one semester and have studied Italian for 4 years. After college I worked at a newspaper for a while before I decided to go back to school and I'm now taking classes to prepare (Econ and Italian) GRE scores V-620 Q-630 W- 5.5.
Schools Applying to
American- SIS
JHU- SAIS
GWU- Elliott
Tufts- Fletcher
BU
Syracuse- Maxwell/Newhouse (joint IR/PR)
American, GW, BU, and Tufts are due today, SAIS was already due, and Syracuse is due Feb 1. Can't wait for this to be over and hopefully to get some positive response from these schools!

Ok, I posted my info before but I thought I'd expand on it. Looking to get work with the UN eventually. Too bad IR majors don't have a website like lawschoolnumbers.com.

Anyways, for what it's worth: Senior at BC in Mass. My GPA is approx. a 3.4 but I have a very nice list of extra curriculars. Intern at a large nonprofit in Boston --> great recommendations! I have also taken the GRE (V710 & Q640) and the LSAT (unfortuately, not what I had originally imagined:a 157). Non-legacy anywhere.

Applications as of 1/16/09:

Columbia SIPA (sent 1/2/09)
NYU - Global Affairs MA (sent 1/6/09)
Georgetown MSFS (sent 1/2/09)
Seton Hall - Whitehead MADIR (sent 1/2/09)
Tufts - Fletcher MALD (sent1/6/09)
American SIS (sent 1/6/09)
GWU - Elliot (sent 1/6/09)

Well, that's it for now. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck, everyone!

Ethan, I'd recommend applying to those 3 schools you mentioned as well. You never know with admissions, plus those schools might give you money.

UPDATE -

Got my first acceptance - Monterey Institute of International Studies - that was fast, like a week after I sent in my application. If only Gtown, American, and GW would be as responsive.

Anyone know anything about this school? Would it be worth considering?

Just needed somewhere to vent. I'm done with my last application, but don't want to submit it yet because one of my recommenders hasn't put in his recommendation for that school yet. He had some problems getting the log-in e-mails from one of the commonly used online application systems, but we've since figured it out (it says his registration is "confirmed" so I know he got the e-mail). I just want him to submit it because I'm afraid something will go wrong with it if I submit the whole thing first and then I can't change the e-mail address or anything if I need to. AHHHHHHH. I mean I trust that he will do it, but it's getting down to the wire since it's due Feb 1. And of course this is my first choice school. God I will be so glad when this is all done! Thanks for listening. Good luck to everyone!

Firefly - im guessing youre referring to Maxwell? The joint IR-PR Masters? Any reason why youd prefer this school over a school in DC like Elliot? How are career prospects for a Maxwell grad? The joint program sounds cool but I was a little turned off when I looked at the curriculum and saw that there were probably more semesters/credits devoted to Public Relations than International Relations.

Ethan, well part of it is that I'm living in the area already. I like the combination of programs and it does include time overseas (usually over the summer) and you spend your last semester in D.C. doing an internship, which are more focused on IR. I also just had a really good experience when I visited there. I'm still open to other programs though depending on funding and such. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Graduated in 2004 from NYU with a BFA (double major: politics, film - my “home” college at NYU was Tisch)
GPA: 3.42 (3.5 in major)
GRE: Quant 730, Verbal 670, Writing 4.5
US citizen, Caucasian male

Study abroad in Ireland my junior year of undergrad (I directed a documentary film)
Have traveled on my own to many countries
Currently living in China, studying Mandarin on a full scholarship from the Chinese gov’t (1 year)

After undergrad, I spent 7 months interning at the most prestigious foreign-policy think-tank in the US
I then spent 3.5 years working for a small consulting firm that does political polling and private sector market research. I’ve conducted polls and devised electoral strategy for many US congressional members, Senators, governors and international heads of state. Our firm stepped up to the national stage and managed internal strategy and polling for Obama in the 2008 primaries and general election. I also managed a number of private sector accounts (major international companies).

Applied to:
JHU-SAIS (MA in IR)
Univ of Chicago, Committee on IR (MA in IR)
Columbia-SIPA (MIA)
Tufts-Fletcher (MALD)
Georgetown-Walsh (MSFS)

I think my GPA and the degree I received from my undergrad years (BFA) is somewhat detrimental, but I believe my GRE scores are significantly above average and my work experience is exceptional. I’m hoping these “soft factors” will put me over the top. I also think that my profile, coming from film school, is very unusual and will make me stand out from other applicants - I just don’t know if admission committees’ reactions will be positive or negative.

Another factor to consider is that I have not yet fulfilled the intro to micro and macroeconomics requirements. It is detrimental, however my job in consulting was basically a crash course in statistical analysis and I did receive a 5 score on AP Calculus.

I’m a mixed bag, but I’m hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone!!!

I applied to some programs that weren’t exclusively IR, though are related.

Undergrad@ UCLA majoring in Middle Eastern and N African Studies with a minor in Hebrew. Overall GPA: 3.55 Major GPA: 3.65.

I speak Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian (not a native speaker in any of those languages) and have reading proficiency in French. I lived in Jerusalem for a year and a half. Did hebrew and persian intensives, worked for a top israeli think tank studying iran’s activities in africa underneath a former israeli ambassador to kenya (one of my recs), tutored palestinian children in ramallah (english), and darfur refugees living in jerusalem. Excessively well-traveled, hardcore community service/extracurriculars (i had a chance living in jerusalem to play with the jerusalem symphony!), and pretty freaking good recs. Real crappy GRE score though.

JHU-SAIS: Strategic Studies
Unv of Chicago: Middle Eastern Studies
Georgetown: Security Studies
GWU-Elliott: Security Policy Studies
King’s College (london): Terrorism, Security, and Society
Unv of Michigan-Ann Arbor: Modern Middle Eastern and N African Studies (Accepted)
Boston University: International Relations and Religion
Columbia: Islamic Studies

I have only heard from Michigan as of yet, and i was suprised to open my email to see an acceptance letter…especially since my GRE scores were waaaay below the average…

does anyone know when we should start hearing back from Georgetown/GWU?

I think Georgetown MSFS could start this week, but will def be within next two weeks. Most schools will be within next few weeks.

I don’t have any contact with any adcoms but I found out in the 2nd week of March a couple years ago for many of my programs. That’s when you can begin to expect successful admissions… After that, the longer you have to wait, the more likely you are on the list of people on the bubble…you might get in, might not. Don’t read too much into it either way.

According to the SIPA admissions blog, they’ll start sending out decisions later this week:

[COLUMBIA | SIPA Admissions Blog Blog Archive Piles of Admission Files: Decision Time](http://rtl.lamp.columbia.edu/sites/sipa/2009/03/03/piles-of-admission-files-decision-time/)

If you applied to SIPA, I’d recommend checking your application page. Apparently decisions have already started to trickle out.

Georgetown too.

Wow thanks Threet - now im really on edge :P

Still waiting on American, GWU, and Georgetown. Georgetown is a reach but Im hoping to get into GWU’s Elliot.

Got into Monterey which I was hesitant to go to because of location and reputation - but to sweeten the deal theyve offered me a completely paid-for intensive language summer at Middlebury college - which would be awesome.

Finally a response! Thank God it was an acceptance! I’m into the IR/PR double degree program at Syracuse. No funding info yet, but at least I have somewhere to go now!

Congrats Firefly! I’m crossing my fingers for Elliot School. Nerve Racking period now…

threetwelve, where’d you here about Georgetown?

Grad cafe doesn’t have any acceptances or rejections up.

Also, I got my first rejection. SIPA. Very long, encouraging letter though, saying I could “rest assured” that I was one of few people they strongly encouraged to reapply after I get more “quantitative coursework.” Though they mentioned high level math, statistics, economics and GRE scores, I presume they mean, predominantly, economics (which I’m taking right now), since I’ve already taken two semesters of college calculus, and I got a 690 on the GRE quantitative section (that’s not too low, is it?).

I’m disappointed and encouraged by their letter. Still got four more universities to hear from.

Well, thegradcafe has info on Georgetown’s MPP and PhD programs.

I still haven’t had news on SIPA though, so it’ll be another day of work tomorrow without anything productive going on. I love admissions season!
