Official IR Acceptances/Rejections thread

I actually didn’t mean that with a negative connotation - maybe I misspoke, or mistyped. I just meant that they seem to approach everything in a really formal manner.

But while I’m at it, what are you studying at SFS?

ahem… so this is my first message ever in a forum, i ve been reading what people have written and I have to say its all very interesting. I have a bit of my own dilemma. I have 5 offers this year, two PhD in econ and 3 MA in IDEV. The idev program from clark has offered me 75% in funding, SIS gave me 20,000 in loans and said figure out the rest and on friday i got an acceptance offer from SAIS. I dont know the funding in this case. Advice anyone??

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if application were up noticeably this year from previous years for these IR programs? Someone mentioned that LBJ school was up about 30%, and I think someone said that Fletcher School was up 35%.

orange dave, I’m concentrating in international development…

oh well then. It just seems odd because out of all the universities i applied to GW was my safety…when i spoke to the reps who came to my university, they told me that the acceptance rate for my particular program of interest (security policy) was 50% and that the most important thing they were looking at was completion of economics prereqs. I happen to actually have work experience in security studies (from when i was living in the middle east). It turned out all right for me anyway since i don’t think that i would have attended even if i was accepted.

I got rejected from Georgetown Security Studies today. It is sort of sad, because they were my top pick even though it was definitely a reach.

I am going to attend American University SIS for sure now. I am probably going to try to finish in a year and a half or something, and while that half year is going on at the end attend law school at the same time probably at Catholic University where I am pretty sure I will get in.

Does anyone know about the “Institute of World Politics.” Are they a trash dump or an actual good school? Someone told me they had security studies there. At American there is not much security studies. If I ever do a Ph.D. after all of this I want to do it on Israeli deterrence and security policy!

Okay, I take back what I said about not being negative about Georgetown’s admissions process. I got a rejection letter in the mail the other day, except it was from the Arab studies department, rather than the school of foreign service, which I had applied to. I still don’t know for sure what my decision is - I’ve been on the phone with them a couple of times now. I don’t really have a good feeling about that one now, but it would be nice to know.

I’m also still waiting on SAIS - which is probably something specific to me, because of a last minute address change. I did get an email from them saying “congratulations, your address has been changed” - I don’t know what to make of that, but that’s not a word you should be using in emails around this time.

btw i just got my official rejection from GWU in the mail…it said that 2100 people applied for just 325 spots…and that under normal circumstances i would have been an admit…eh oh well :-)

orange dave…email the SAIS admissions department…that’s what i did and they gave me a prompt response the next day :-)

hey guys! So I’m in a bit of a dilemma in a good sort of way though! I only applied to two MA programs in IR. I got accepted by GWU, which I would be more than happy to go to, but then I also got waitlisted by the Fletcher school. First of all I have to decide whether I want to go to the school with the better academic program or the better location(DC:internship, e.t.c). But also being waitlisted they wrote that I should send any addition pertinent information to boost my chances of being accepted. I can’t think of anything I should send them though, I mean wouldn’t another recommendation letter just annoy them? Is it worth writing them a letter and to attach that to the wait list candidate reply form.

In addition anyone want to way in on GWU Elliott School MA in Int’l Affairs vs Fletcher MALD in particular. I’m coming straight from undergraduate so going to GWU would give me the advantage of having more work experience but are there any itnernships in Boston, I heard the RAND corporation has an office there?

don’t make a pick on schools based on one think tank that might be based there. Either way, most the Rand big-wigs are in D.C. or San Fran.

If you get off the waitlist, I’d go to Fletcher. If not, GWU is fine.
