Did anyone here take the October test and get a lower math and cr score than expected? This is why I have to take the January test and I am really nervous. Do you think it will be as hard as the October test?

@College123college: CR was my lowest section on PSAT, so Iām going through a lot of guides right now- in various prep books and the super helpful guides here on CC. I think as I practice Iām going to try and use different methods and create one of my own, using various strageties. Itās going to be a long process of figuring out what works. =P

How is everyone preparing?

Early twentieth-century writers Ernest Hemingway and
Edna St. Vincent Millay owed much of their public
visibility to self-promotion: both were adept at -------
their own literary works
(A) Marketing
(B) modernizing
Ā© duplicating
(D) finalizing
(E) editing

Help! i chose E. the answer is A. why?

Well I ended up getting 2210 (770 M, 670 CR, 770 W 11 E) on the December SAT as my first try. Satisfied with the overall score, but this proves that I really need to work on CRā¦ Quite a bit.
For me vocab really isnāt the issue- itās mainly the longer passages that screw me over. Sometimes itās comprehension, other times itās picking the wrong answer.
For sure Iām gonna look over vocab, but how can I guarantee a score over 720?

I took the December test and got a 2280. For my first time I was expecting something near the 2200ās so I did better than expected but my score distributions were horrible as I got an 800 CR 800 Writing and 680 Math. Planning on taking it again in January and tips to increase my math score would be appreciated!

@Tennistigerā the most important thing to remember for CR is that all the evidence you need is in the passage, do not use outside info or your personal beliefs. Look at the passage only! In addition to that even if the question as you to look at certain sentences like 11-15, I would recommend reading a few sentences behind and in front as well for the answer too. For sentences in context the answer is almost always not the known definition for the answer so I wouldnāt pick it unless you were completely certain.

@HarvardVinesā could you give tips on how to get 800 on reading for those hovering around low 700ās?

Also, as for math, best tip is to practice through the real testsā¦target the level 4/5 difficulty questions and just go through those, b/c if you can do those, you can succeed on level 1, 2, and 3 questions and thus get closer to 800ā¦ i think there are some specific math sat books such as Dr. Chungās, so look into those also.

Seems like a lot of people are having trouble on SAT CR. I consistently score 750-800 and my advice is to read slowly. Answer questions after you read a paragraph at a time to get the full context of the question.
Iām taking the SAT January too and Iām pretty nervous. Hoping for 2250+ like most peopleā¦

@satgirl2015
donāt u sometimes, often with me, actually, feel that 2 choices r the same n that both of them can be correct ? i often canāt get the subtle differences between the choices.

@Hypocritā yeah, sometimes thatās the reason why I donāt always get 800s. Well idk how to explain itā¦ Itās usually just going with your gut.

@College123collegeā
Hey! thanks for the advice. I just received my Dr.Chungās prep book and plan on drilling all the lessons in my head. As for critical reading, if youāre somewhere around the low 700ās, Iām assuming you usually get stuck on either vocabulary or those passage questions that can go either way (correct me if Iām wrong). The best advice I can give you for aquiring more vocabulary would be to google the collegeboards most used sat vocabulary, this is a free and easy way to get the upper hand, in addition to this many people recommend reading as a way to gain a higher score. I am a much too busy person to read a great deal but I found that simply googling the vocabulary words are helpful. For example, wuthering heights (which I have read) has a ton of SAT vocabulary words. If you have the time, feel free to read the book and highlight the text you donāt know; if not, just simply google Wuthering heights vocabulary words for a large amount of sat words found in the book. Iām one of those people who believes you have to study vocabulary to get a good score. If you donāt mind paying, then direct hits is said to be very good as well though I didnāt use it. For the passage questions where you feel it can go either way. The greatest thing I can tell you is to only use evidence stated directly in the passage. If you use this technique, youāll find that one answer is based on evidence from the passage while one is not. I also suggest reading the reason why you got a certain answer wrong. The way the collegeboard sets apart the correct answers from the incorrect gave me an idea of the viewpoint I had to take to do well.
Good luck!

@College123collegeā Something I forgot to mention is that I donāt think one needs to use any prep books to increase their CR section besides the blue book and official practice tests. If you Google October 2011 SAT and click on the first response, youāll find additional real practice tests if you ever run out of the ones in the blue book. Iām planning on using them to study for my second time around because I plan on doing 3 math practice tests a day over break

This is the first time Iāll be taking the SAT. I have a good score in math but critical reading and writing isnāt too pretty right now. Both of them are at 680. Are there any suggestions?

@wowowowsaā Self-promotion is a hint here, it means an act of advertising oneself to get publicity or fame. The latter half of the sentence is an explanation for the first half.
Reword to make it easier: Early twentieth-century writers Ernest Hemingway and Edna St. Vincent Millay owed their fame to self-promotion: both were good at promoting/ advertising/ marketing their works to the audience.
Choice E is editing, it has nothing to do with the thing stated in the first half about how they owed their fame to self-promotion.
So you just need to pay attention to the key word ;)

so for CR every answer comes from the passage, weather it is directly stated or implied right?
I also have problems distinguishing between two minutely different answer choices in few select questions in some of the passages.
@i2400ezpz Yes, every answer comes from the passage. Something that helped me choose the right answer from 2 similar answers is breaking the choices down and looking at what the choices are actually. Ex: This passage explains vs. this passage criticizes.
Just new to this thread, Iāll be taking the SAT in january as well!
Iām improving in CR, I went from a 590 in CR to a 650 and a 730. All I had to do was enforce a simple mindset: The answer is always in the passage, and most importantly, DONāT OVERTHINK!
(Which I did like crazy. Like, if I was answering a question and in my gut saw an answer that I was sure was wrong, I would say, āwaitā¦ did they talk about thatā¦?ā)
Anyway Iām hoping for a 2050-2100+. How have you guys improved in CR, (especially passages?)
Hi, grammar section is very important in SAT. My daughter is giving SAT this year. She had also join C2 classes and her score is also improving. I suggest you to join some good learning center. You can also visit at https://plus.google.com/115930597376423933738
iām taking it in 15 days as well :< iāve taken it twice already (once for a talent search and once last year) and i really donāt want to take it again haha
