Okay...for that teacher one I put the one with "personal" or something...It seemed logical but I really couldn't focus, especially on that question.

So did anyone else not have "harrowing" and "disingenuous"?

Okay...for that teacher one I put the one with "personal" or something...It seemed logical but I really couldn't focus, especially on that question.

So did anyone else not have "harrowing" and "disingenuous"?

no...it was "The beaches were contaminated with sewage flowing from the chemical plant; the contamination lasted for several days"

otherwise it could have been the sewage flowed for several days

ok for that one the equation was x^2 = x + 6, so x cannot be greater than 3 because otherwise there would be no equation. All the other choices worked when i plugged them into the equation.

@MattM

i didn't get those words either

@Goldfish

-2 was a solution for x...therefore... x cannot be greater than 3 if a negative answer was also a solution for x

I didn't have harrowing and disingenuous"

i'm pretty sure there was no mention of a "chemical plant" and that after the semi-colon there was a "this" ... except for that, i don't quite remember the details.

I still think we may have not reached the correct original sentence (to clear it up). I would find it unusual for me to make little errors on writing since it is my strong point by far. But the last two I did instantly so maybe, just maybe, I got that one wrong.

Goldfish, what do you mean. Can someone explain this to me?

well two of the choices were...

x^2 > x
x^2 < x

We are given x^2 = x+6

I think one of the two choices i mentioned is correct?

In any case, apart from the exacting wording of the sewage sentence, i think we agree that the answer is E.

The sentence read something along the lines of....

Sewage waste ....... the ocean, which can last for several days. This is not correct because it's a misplaced modier...the ocean doesn't last for several days. I think I ended up putting E... with the semicolon.

I had 2 math 20 question sctions. Which was experimental?

foolonthehill, yeah, I got the firfst choice you listed.

"well two of the choices were...

x^2 > x
x^2 < x

We are given x^2 = x+6

I think one of the two choices i mentioned is correct?"

what do you mean? x equals wasn't an answer i think. i only saw x<3

Does this thread also make you all feel like you've done worse than you originally thought? :)

We are given x^2 = x+6 in the problem.

edit:
The choice x<3 implies that x cannot be 3. However, x=3 is a solution for the polynomial.

x^2 > x is what i answered.

The question is:
Which one of the following is correct, given the equation x^2=x+6
If you solve for x, you get x=3, -2
Therefore the only correct answer is x^2>x

Golfish, it was x^2>x

Just solve the equation and you come out with X=-2, therefore if you square that you come with 4 and -2+6 is also 4, making the equation valid.

...

the problem was
Which of the following is true if you are given:

x^2 = x + 6

A)
B)
etc.
correct answer is x^2 > x

because x = 3 was also a solution for x
