Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT Scores (Highest in my school by a long shot), GPA, Course Load, Ranking, ECs
[] Weaknesses: Essays maybe, Geographic location (Not looked upon well in terms of academics), lack of opportunity for big competitions or awards (My counselor wasn’t completely sure what was meant by National Merit Scholarship Competition, it’s that rare from our area)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I just didn’t fit with what they wanted. An interview would have been nice, I typically do well in those, especially if they get to see what usually comes out of my area…
[li] Other Decisions: Accepted: UVa SEAS, Georgia Tech Biomedical Engineering. Pending: Duke, Yale[/li][/ul]

You DON’T suck. There is no rhyme or reason to this stuff. Rejected at BU, Northwestern, Tulane, UCSD (waitlisted), but accepted to JH? ***? It really makes NO sense. We all end up where we are supposed to be. Hang in there sweets!

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I probably annoyed them somehow, I have no idea[/li][/ul]General Comments: IT’S ALRIGHT, yesterday I cried for the longest time, but today I got into my dream school. I now believe things happen for a reason :)

Pick one:
Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (W: 800, CR: 790, M: 710)
[] SAT II (if submitted): 710 World History, 720 Math II, 780 Math I
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.90
[] Weighted GPA (out of 5.0):4.52
[] Grades in AP/IB/honors classes (if applicable): All A’s throughout 9-11 grades, except Bs in freshman US History G/T and sophomore AP Government
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 9/254
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): All 5’s on Government, Calc AB, Language, and World History
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English 12 (Literature), AP Macroeconomics/Microeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Psychology, Spanish 4 Honors, World Religions, Photography
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None really. School-level awards and honors, Honorable Mention for Maryland Distinguished Scholars.
[/ul]Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): I don’t feel like typing them out lol. My ECs were just ~alright~, nothing spectacular. I didn’t really do anything until junior year though.
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: Continuously starting junior year at the Domestic Violence Center of our county. Various one-time occasions, including photography for school multiple times, an art festival, office assistance at JHU’s PACE study.
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): It was alright. I described volunteering at the Domestic Violence Center. I showed a lot of emotion and depth for what it means to me, but I wasn’t super descriptive.
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I thought this was very good. I wrote about how 9/11 affected my life as a Muslim American. It was really long, but it was very personal and gave a lot of background on my interest in International Relations.
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it): The supplemental essays? They were alright, the second better than the first. For why I want to go to JHU, I said some pretty generic things about Baltimore and how I can do so much in the city and on campus. For what made me interested in my major, I described a conference I went to in DC my junior year, my parents’ influence, and my additional interest in psychology.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): One from my Spanish teacher and one from my AP World History teacher. I didn’t see them, but I’m sure they were great, both reallllllly liked me, and I was the brightest student in their classes, according to them.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): She didn’t know me very well, but my school is kinda ~bad~, the other students she deals with are pretty much awful, so I look great to her in comparison lol. She probably wrote good things, but it probably wasn’t too important.
[/ul]Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Pakistani)
[] Gender: Female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Nothing really. Both of my parents are employed by JHU, and my dad has his Master’s from there. I’m the first in my family to go to college at an undergraduate level in America, though.
[/ul]Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, scores, essays, courseload
[] Weaknesses: ECs
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea how I was accepted lol. I’m still so shocked. I can’t even believe it.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I will most likely be attending JHU. Unless Georgetown accepts me from their waiting list…

Common App Main: I would give myself a 9 here. My personal statement was awesome. I worked on it with my AP Literature teacher for a while. She’s a very tough grader, but at the end of it, she said there was no reason why a university wouldn’t read my essay and not consider it some remarkable writing. * What would you have done differently?:
a few things with course selection, tried the ACT and applied early!!

[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Loved it, personally! It was about my love for foreign languages. I wrote it in a third person POV, kind of like a news article.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted! Truly, I’m so excited for each and every one of you! For those of you who were rejected, please don’t feel down. I know it’s disheartening right now, but know that all the colleges that accepted you did so because they felt they had something to offer you, and vice versa. And remember, college isn’t the end of life. You have many more opportunities to look forward to! For those of you that are waitlisted, I wish you the best of luck! :)

[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong test scores, and that’s just about it.
[] Weaknesses: Everything but test scores. No strong ECs, no strong awards, lacking profile as a whole. Essays certainly were nowhere near as good as they would needed to have been to outweigh the downsides. And a cookie-cutter Asian applicant. I guess everyone gets lucky sometime.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I AM LEGION. Evidently, they do have to take a number of generic applicants each year. I have no clue how I got into BME with my complete dearth of engineering (except bridge building), but who knows. Our school actually has a handful of students accepted to BME, so it seems like they opened up the program quite a bit this year.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Ha ha ha…
Accepted: Cornell, UChicago, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, CWRU, OSU
WL: Northwestern, WUSTL
Rejected: UPenn (no surprise there, terrible application overall), Yale (Ouch.)
[/ul]General Comments: To those who were accepted, my congratulations! You represent those chosen from a strong pool of hopefuls, and I wish you the best (maybe I’ll see you around)! To the waitlisted, well, you still have quite an accomplishment on your hands. JHU doesn’t boast a huge waitlist, so you just had some bad luck; it is not a reflection of your ability. And to the rejected, you will be heading to strong institutions anyways, maybe not JHU, but other excellent places. Yes, you tried and missed (as I have many, many times), but in a year of extraordinary competition, that can only reflect positively on your motivation, ambition, and drive. My best wishes to you. And to all, live long and prosper!
