So, got the official letter in the mail today. Just having it in my hands makes it so much more real. Seriously, I think I'm going to frame it...hehe

haha, i got the official letter before the decision went online. it took me completely by surprise, but i immediately knew it was good news because of how big it was. :-)

I got home on Thurs. and helped my mom clean up a little, then she gave me a wrapped box and was all like, "Yeah, so I wanted to give this to you early, so at least you can enjoy this and know that you can use this at any other college even if you don't get into Duke" (or something very convincing like that). I was like "ookthx" and opened it, and inside was this priority mail envelope, and my mind was so totally gone. The possibility that they would even mail letters out before the online decisions came out had literally never crossed my mind. Even when I turned it over and saw the "Duke University Class of 2010" on the front, I was just like "oh, maybe she got like a shirt or something as consolation?" My thought process was so wack. I can't even figure out how I didn't even suspect it. I pulled it open, all la dee daa, and it wasn't until I actually had the folder open that I realized what it was.

I cannot BELIEVE that I was that dim. xD

Novah...that is an absolutely awesome story! I wish I could have found out like that!!

did any of yall apply for financial aid/ did that come with your packages?

Mine had a note inside from my admissions officer and I will hang on to it forever. I can't believe they find the time. Duke is really a great place.

I got a letter about my financial aid. I have to send in a copy of tax returns and what not before they tell me how much they can give me.

I was at school on Thursday working my little butt off on an english project like the studious dukies we're gonna be next year... and i got 5 calls in 10 minutes on my cell, and finally I picked up. It was my dad on the phone saying how he was not joking. Then he started reading me the letter, "We are pleased to inform you that Duke University is now your university!" My grammar project group was filming at the time, so I had to stay quiet, but I was jumping up and down pointing at the phone across the room to our class valedictorian who ducked off camera to celebrate w/ me :)!!! After they finished filming, we started yelling and celebrating a little bit louder ;).... turns out the camera was still on! It's pretty hilarious.

Should I even bother with the financial aid stuff if my family makes over 300k? Probably not right?

Yeah i don't think you'd get anything... haha they'd probably RAISE your tutition. Just kidding.

But then again it's always worth a shot... but you'd probably get more money if you looked in other directions for scholarship money that's not need-based.

Congrats guys, but I have a question. Since Duke is reluctant to report SAT scores and things of that sort (Average GPA, Class Rank, etc.) would you guys mind sharing your scores. I'm a sophomore and just wondering what I need to expect.

Hmm lets see... (keep in mind there is no way to tell how "average" the responses you'll receive are and they are just examples of course)

SAT: 2380 - 800 V, 780 M, 800 W
IIs:Chemistry 800, Math 2c 780
GPA: 4.7ish weighted, no idea unweighted
AP scores: Calc BC 5, US History 5, Chem 5
Class Rank: -

Also, you're only a sophmore, enjoy high school. See how you do and then pick what schools are good fits for you rather than trying to fit into them.

SAt: 2130: 750 V, 650 M, 730 W
IIs: US history: 770, Spanish Lang: 710
GPA: 3.77 UW, don't know eighted
AP: US History: 5, Spanish: 4
no class rank

don't fret!! worry about it in 2 years

SAT: 2300: 800 V, 760 M, 740 W
IIs: US Hist - 800, Math2 - 750, Literature - 730
GPA: 4.67 weighted
AP: USHST 5, WHST: 5, Eng: 4
Class Rank: 45/694

Again, averages, GPAs and Ranks are not really a true barometer ow whether or not you'll get in. Find MANY schools that you like, do your best in your classes and things will fall into place as they should. Develop as many options as possible so that you have many first choice schools, and not just one favorite. Just one word of advice to you though - try to get all of your SATs and SAT IIs done by the end of your Junior year. I did that, and it really helps to not have to worry about that as you put your apps together. Best of luck in 2 years.

SAT: 2230: 790 M, 700 V, 740 W
IIs: Math1C 780, Spanish 680
GPA: 4.77 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
AP: US History 4, English Lang 4
Class Rank: 3/427

Alright, I think I'm in good shape, and to everyone bidding me to have fun in and enjoy high school, don't worry..I am. I just wanted to know what it "took" for you. What I find most interesting is the number of AP classes everyone has taken, and in no way am I trying to put down your effort, but I think my school offers a lot more. How did some of you get GPAs of ~4.7, and how are honors and AP classes weighted at your high school? Thanks to everyone who responded, and congratulations, maybe I will see in in 2008!!

5.0 for honors "A's", whereas an "A" in a regular class would only reward you with a 4.0. btw, my school offered 28 AP classes (out of the 32 tests offered) and a full IB program. We have no cap on # of AP classes you can take or anything like that.

Yeah those are just the aps i took junior year... i'm taking 4 more this year for a total of 7, i think our school offers like 11 total (i'm not taking the french, german, spanish or computer science basically). In admissions confidential, they rate your course load difficultly, and in order to get a high rating, you need to have taken 5 ap courses (if offered by your school). So definatly load up if you can/want to.

Also, that book mentions that they automatically give any IB Candidate their highest rating (a 5) for curriculum choice.

I see, in my school a regular A recieves a 4, an honors class a 4.5, and AP a 5. When are you guys heading to Durham?
