Official Middlebury 2013 ED Thread

Is a deferral better though? I was deferred from Hamilton, another small elite liberal arts college, but I'm not sure that it's any better that they aren't denies, it only get's our hope up. I know you hear about kids who get deferred from ED and then miraculously get into the from RD, but lets be serious, isn't that like 1 in 100? I won't give up even though I was deferred, but I'm not sure if it's realistic to think that I still have a chance after being denied once.

I would like to ask whether whose who are accepted applied for FA, b/c as far as i know, those who applied for FA were defered (also there are still people who are rejected)...

Tenisman.. were you being recruited?

snoboarder38...You're wrong. Being deferred up from ED 1 gives us better odds in the RD applicant pool because Midd knows that we love Midd soooo much and that they are our number #1 choice. Granted, it is still just as competitive to get in, and the fact that you applied ED wont automatically get you in, but it will help us. good luck everyone.

ish...always complicated as it is w/this. coach would have liked me on the team if I could get in. had pretty solid stats but my high school hasnt done well with midd in recent years (like 3 kids in 5-6 years getting in) out of like 60+ applying. was deferred so just trying to figure plan B

I often wonder if the coaches are coached to say that.. if you can get in on your own I'd love to have to try out or walk on or...

I don't know if that is being honest or if they are offering platitudes because really, what do they have to lose? Personally, I'd prefer they be very direct and honest to save everyone's time and, when it comes to college admissions, emotions.

tenisman
sorry about the deferral. Had the coach told you he would help you get in or use a "tip" for you. Have you been in contact with him since the decision. Can he help with RD?

So... I'm new around here. Hi to you all.

I got deferred too...
This really freaks me out seeing Zlin's stats, and I'm feeling like my chances just got even slimmer. I think I'm pretty good, but not that ridiculous. My high school doesn't calculate GPA, so I'm not sure what mine is, but I've got all A's except for one B+ in a sophomore history class. I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10%, and I was inducted into Cum Laude earlier this year. I took 1 AP last year (Latin lit, and got a 5 on the AP test) and I'm taking 4 AP's this year (English, Latin Vergil, art history, and French language). I've been a dual language kid (French and Latin) throughout high school, which I thought Midd would like... Gotten a few awards for National Latin Exam, including their Summa cum Laude award.
The interests I stressed most were English and Classics and studio art (I've been in advanced drawing studio for 3 years, won a drawing award at my school, did a summer program printmaking at RISD, and sent Midd a portfolio). My supplementary essay was in response to the J-term class question, and I wrote about an illustrating-Latin-poetry class, and enclosed this comic I made of the first few lines of the Aeneid.
Did anyone else express similar interests? I mean, I know English is pretty common, but I was hoping I'd get points for being unique in the visual arts and classics area.
I suppose my extracurriculars are okay but not amazing. I'm an editor (not editor-in-chief) on my school's arts journal, cartoonist for our newspaper, student leader of our creative writing club, and I'm a member of our crossword/scrabble club. I've never done any sports (because, frankly, I am a wimp). I felt too guilty to put down environmental club, even though I attended their meetings most of last year, because pretty much all I ever did was sit there and steal their bagels.
One of my recs was from my 11th grade English teacher, and she's a Middlebury alumn. I also ran my main essay by her and another English teacher, and they both loved it... so I'm hoping that helps...
Oh, and SAT's... 2210 altogether. CR: 750 V: 790 M: 670
And 740 on SAT II in literature. Still waiting to hear back about SAT II in Latin, which I'm a bit nervous about because I was not feeling in tip-top shape that day.
Also, I'm a white girl from NY.

You know, Zlin, I'll eat my foot if you don't get in. I'm just hoping there aren't too many applicants like you, so maybe I'll be the next tier down that gets accepted. Argh. Can't believe I've got another 3 months in limbo.

from what I heard, a majority of the ED acceptances were athletes...sort of interesting.

Yeah, I was just looking at the stats, and it seems like kind of an absurd number of team captains were among the number of total accepted...

Yes yellowavcable I think you are right :-(

Out of the 260ish that were accepted through ED1, 125 were team captains

however, noone should be discouraged by other peoples' stats! everyone who wants to go here is lucky in that Middlebury will look at more than numbers. Just make sure they can read who you are, and emphasize what about yourself will help you fit in! My interviewer and school admissions rep all emphasized that fitting in is the most important aspect for admission (as long as you're in a certain range). I have a 3.85 UW and a 2250 (one sitting- 730 CR, 720 M, 800 W), and they apparently paid attention to the other virtues of my application that I was thrilled with.

congrats to everyone who was accepted, and good luck to everyone who was deferred!

i kind of regret my decision to apply RD. i didn't realize how much i loved midd before the deadline passed. you'll all make the RD pool a whole lot more competitive.

sorry guys, but in my opinion, zlin sounds beyond arrogant...

sorry zlin, but you need to realize that, even with great scores, that doesn't mean you deserve to get in over anyone else. Middlebury is competitive. They get to choose from a wide source of candidates. And guess what: ALL of them are smart. Midd's looking for people who fit in with the character of the school, not just the statistics. It doesn't seem like zlin does...

I live in a suburb in california, am white, go to a public school, and have lower test scores than you, zlin. I don't do a lot of volunteer work because I'm so busy with sports, don't work for the same reason, and didn't take any AP tests. I'm not a legacy, not a recruited athlete, and from the previous description, obviously not a minority. In your opinion, I'm sure your thinking your a waaaay better candidate for admission to middlebury.

But I got in...

Ouch Stinglikeabee, now I know why you chose that name. Look, I think your point is well taken, but there's no reason to slam anyone else. I suppose that advice goes to everyone though.

I figured Zlin would make it myself. I guess we'll have to see if his deferral was, indeed, Middlebury's loss. ;-)

I mean this with complete appreciation for all the hard work and pride kids feel when getting accepting to college, especially ED. But I find it interesting that before ED decisions come out everyone is commiserating by holding virtual hands and playing a kumbayah sound track. Then the rejections and deferrals are announced and for some reason (arrogance bravado?) the accepted seem to inflate themselves as the only ones truly worthy of acceptance. Please try to understand that a lot of well qualified people are not accepted every year and the accepted might have landed in a completely different pile last year or next. My thinking is merely that there needs to be slightly more compassion for those who are merely disappointed or struggling to understand the admission's process and where they fit within it.

While I am slightly put off by the idea that being an athlete precludes you from taking AP's, getting great grades and test scores, I'll let it go.

This said, I fully admit to freaking out just a tad that April will roll around and my kid will be developing a website of some fake college he's created just across town in an abandoned mental health facility.
