Reflection

Strengths: underrepresented country, unique background, test scores, commitment to one major EC
Weaknesses: grades, late bloomer, lack of ECs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t know really.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected by Columbia ED. Waiting for decisions by Cornell, JHU, Georgetown, Tufts, Colgate and GWU.

General comments:
I am honestly surprised by the decision. Ever since my rejection by Columbia, I felt that I was not up to par for top tier colleges. To all those who were rejected, remember that you have worked very hard and institutional priorities unfortunately. A college acceptance or rejection does not define your capability.

] Strengths: Essay, recs, testing
[] Weaknesses: GPA! The average accepted for my school is 3.9
[
] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Middlebury must be trying to climb the LAC rankings and wants my test scores. I have no other explanation. I scheduled a tour for this school and then missed it, and they emailed me asking why I missed it and I never responded. That’s that negative expressed interest lol.
[/ul]General Comments: Didn’t get finaid so I’ll have to try to visit and negotiate that. Case Western gave me 30k a year in merit AND fin aid, its gonna be very tough to pass that up.

[] Strengths: ECs, Essay, Interview
[
] Weaknesses: Scores and GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Scores and GPA were definitely low, and I didn’t get to tell my story about how my sexuality has affected me and my life. Other than that, I guess I really just wouldn’t fit in at Middlebury.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Penn State, Univ. of Vermont (Honors+16k a year), UCONN (honors+5k a year), Northeastern, BU (Honors) Rejected: Middlebury Waiting on: Georgetown (Deferred EA), Duke, Tufts, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Penn
[/ul]General Comments: I’m really not that upset. I realize I didn’t put my all into my application and I think it showed that Middlebury really isn’t a top school of my mine. [
] Job/Work Experience: Paid internship for gov’t, interned for local newspaper
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutored kids, taught kids music, hours for National Honor Society
[
] Summer Activities: Both internships over the summer, took a few summer courses to get credit during the school year
[] Essays: Common App – About my love for the library!! Personally, I loved this essay, even though someone said it was a little childish :expressionless:
[
] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were good! I asked my favorite English teacher, and my newspaper adviser.
[] Counselor Rec: We were never that close, so eh, maybe just a basic counselor rec?
[
] Additional Rec: My boss at the gov’t internship – he’s a very sweet person and I had a lot of fun at the internship, and they invited me back for this summer, so probably good!
[li] Interview: It was okay! My interviewer was really nice (and really attractive too hahahaha), though the interview was a little awkward because I was really nervous the entire time and he asked me to raise the volume of my voice twice. To be honest, listening to my interviewer’s experiences at Middlebury really made me want to go even more.[/li]
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[
] Intended Major: English
[] State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
[
] Country (if international applicant):

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT scores, recommendations, internship? maybe essays?
[
] Weaknesses: GPA, GPA, GPA, GPA, GPA, and lack of awards
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: To be honest, not really sure. I’ve never had a lot of confidence in myself (which explains the reason why I applied to so many colleges), and my GPA is pretty low for competitive schools and I’m an Asian female, but I don’t think I’ll ever know. In fact, my counselor told me I didn’t really have a chance at schools like Middlebury… College admissions are weird. But be passionate! I love reading and analyzing books, so most of my activities throughout high school were centered around that (and I completely suck at sciences).[/li]
[/ul]General Comments:
Congratulations to those who made it, and for others, don’t worry! You will have good news soon

Volunteer/Community service: Gen. admin and helping tourists at my local Chamber of Commerce.
Summer Activities: Summer school at Stanford, foreign language school at Middlebury.

Teacher Recommendation: I go to a small school, so my teachers know me very well.
Counselor Rec: I’m sure very good, although I don’t know her that well.
Additional Rec: I submitted one from a scientist I worked for, very nice guy.
Interview: Took place at a bakery near where I live. It lasted around 45 minutes, and I think it went very well. I talked about my interests and ECs and I asked him some questions about his experience at Middlebury.
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Economics
State (if domestic applicant): Pacific Northwest
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White

Income Bracket: ~80k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
Reflection
Strengths: My essay was a little unusual, which was risky, but it worked out well. My grades were strong, and I had some genuinely interesting and unusual activities on my resume.
Weaknesses: My SAT scores, especially in math. Also, I had only taken one AP class before senior year, so I was worried about the rigor of my classes.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I come from an area of the country that probably doesn’t send a lot of kids to Middlebury. Also, I think my essay really did it for me.
General Comments: I’m actually really surprised. Will see what else comes my way in the next few weeks.

[] Essays:Prompt three on the CA. About challenging people’s beliefs by being physically strong. It focused on my ability to do a lot of push-ups even though I’m a petite, nerdy girl. It was kind of humorous, and I spent a long time on it. Everyone who read it liked it. 9/10
[
] Teacher Recommendation: 1st Rec: Not sure, he saw me help out a student in one notable instance in his class, but it’s impossible to say if he wrote about it.
2nd Rec: I think it was probably pretty good. I gave him a lot of supplemental information to pull from, and him and I were kind of on the same wavelength (he got the Portal reference I made in an essay once lol)

No regrets. I applied here to see what would happen, and it didn’t work out. C’est la vie, as they say. Congrats to all accepted, and good luck to future applicants.

THIS IS AMAZING!

I was also accepted to Bates, Uconn, and Bard. Rejected from Colby, Cornell, Northeastern, and UVA. This college admissions process is so unpredictable. Who gets rejected from Northeastern and into MIDDLEBURY?!? Couldn’t be weirder. I’m still waiting on 13 other schools, but the only ones that I’d consider over Middlebury are Penn, Duke, Dartmouth, Brown, Swarthmore, and Northwestern. Wish me luck! Worse case scenario is that I end up here, and I’m blessed to have Middlebury as an option.
