I noticed that you accepted a lot more people than usual EA. Are you expecting a lower yield this year, or a larger freshman class? How do you think this will affect the percent of deferred applicants (or just applicants in general) that you admit RD?

same question as la montagne
but i think they are expecting lower yield than past years for EA . for example out of 3 of my friends that got in. 1 really really really really wanted to go
one has Harvard as top choice but no more EA and the other one is picking between MIT and caltech after CPW... (super small sample, i know. but just to make a point)
and i am one of those REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go deferred students>.<

Siemens sends letters to colleges for all Regional Finalists. Matt and other MIT people also attend the RF compettion on campus. The other sponsoring schools are also at their respective schools to recruit. It's a great opportunity for the recruiting schools and the kids!

Caltech sent out persoanlized letters to Siemens (and in January, to Intel SFs) recruiting them. There was an article in the Tech (Caltech's campus paper) on this in November. Here's the link: The California Tech

Still, it doesn't hurt to let MIT or any other school know if you made Siemens SF and didn't include it on your app and are now in the deferred pool.

Ok so im guessing benjones or whoever read my app didnt know i was a siemens SF. Aghh...I should have updated MIT!!! Thanks CountingDown for the information. Btw, do you think that adds a lot to the application?

Ducktape,
That is the most incredible story! That's one that will stay with you forever. (And note to everyone else: Admissions folks DO read these blogs. Act accordingly! :) )

bballdude, I have no way of knowing if it would make a difference, but it's a nice national-level award nonetheless and shows skills in research and writing!

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:[ /b] Very surprised I got in early, but happy. Definitely feel like I will thrive at MIT. I'll be on this forum throughout today so feel free to shoot me (no pun intended!) some questions about how to get in.

Wow, go away for a choir concert and come back to 3 more pages of discussion.

To all those deferred, please check out the results threads from last year. There are a lot of kids that get deferred and then accepted. I understand that it royally sucks to have to wait until March (OK, granted, I don't to the extent you guys do), but really, it will all work out for the best. Yes, you ought to start on other apps to make sure that you still get into a great school (I mean, you're applying to MIT! You're awesome!), but don't think this is it. Delayed gratification, right? I'm totally cheering for you guys.

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: [/li]- Should have sent my Siemens-Westinghouse research paper?
- Maybe also should have done an interview (which I scheduled today).[/ul]

I've got to say, this was surprising and somewhat disappointing. :/ I thought the rank would help for sure, considering how ridiculously competitive a class of over 1000 is (our school has over 4250 people). But oh well, I guess I'll just submit my research paper and do the interview for RD.... :(

I can answer this -- they are enlarging the freshman class from ~1000 to ~1100 over the next few years, as undergraduates are expected to be able to move into a formerly graduate dorm. (Jessie, that's right, isn't it? They're moving undergrads into Ashdown, rather than building?)

Since this is not a large increase, it is likely that the larger number of students admitted EA reflects MIT's opinion that yield will go down this year.

tintin,
DS did not submit his Siemens/Intel paper to MIT, though he did send it to other schools. He wrote about his research in the Optional Essay. There was one actual paragraph about the work itself. The rest was about his philosophy of research, his relationship with his mentor, how he ran into several dead ends before hitting on a solution, and how he did the work, complete with dog, snacks, and music, outside under a tree in the front yard. It was creative, humble, funny, and very real.

I don't know that the admissions office has time to read thousands of papers, but perhaps a brief essay (if you haven't written about it already) about your research might be appropriate, along with a mention of the SF award. I recall Matt saying on one of the blogs (or maybe on the app itself -- it all runs together now) that they preferred not to get a research paper, but wanted to hear about how you approached your work, what you got out of it, etc.

The yield is going down because Harvard and Princeton got rid of their early decision programs. I think MIT thinks that the people who applied EA to MIT might have had Harvard or Princeton as their top choice, but since EA isn't binding, applied to MIT. Thus, when they get into Harvard/Princeton come April, they will matriculate at those school.
