[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/li]My mother is kind of against me going because of financial issues. I've already been accepted to Dean Scholar's and Turing Scholars at University of Texas Austin (Natural Sciences and computer Sciences honors, respectively). It's cheaper to stay at home, and I already have so much going for me here. I want to go to MIT for grad school for sure. How is the admission at MIT for grad school? What are chances that undergrad students can stay there for another four years?

But why am I complaining, seriously.
OH MY GOD. I TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THIS. My SAT II's sucked. My AP's sucked. My ECs sucked. The ONLY thing I really had going for me was all my science research.

This is proof that dreams can come true.
It also makes me feel bad to talk to friends who weren't accepted, so I'm kind of keeping low profile about this =/[/ul]

Rejected

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul][/li]AHHHHHH I AM SO EXCITED!!!! *spasm :P See you guys at CPW!!!!!
I actually have kind of a funny story about how I got my acceptance. I was at barnes & noble with a friend to check it, but I couldn't get wireless, so I was like...grar...must check decision...so I went to the apple store a couple of streets over and checked on one of the store laptops. So I open up the decision and I start like crying and laughing histerically simultaenously, and I was just like "wow....I JUST GOT INTO MIT...wow..." and one of the random apple geniuses was standing nearby, and he was like, "MIT! wow congrats! that's a first!" referring to someone checking their decision at the apple store. So the first person to congratulate me was an apple genius :D

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Is there something fundamentally wrong with me?!?!?![/ul]

WOAH.... hopelesslydevote... i would have admitted you if i were in admissions...

I really hate to sound conceited, but I thought I was in. I'm just SO JAWO:IEHJWDA:OIJO:ASDIJASD:OSA CONFUSED right now! AS:OIDJA:SOEWO:QEIJ@QO:EQWEWE

hmm there seems to be an inverse relationship between qualifications and acceptance...
i don't mean to be bitter; i'm just saying i'm suprised by some of mit's admission decisions

hopelesslydevote, oh my gosh! i cry for you :( I thought MIT pretty much admitted all USAMO people

Someone from my school got rejected today. For the record, this Asian male is a local math god, the dominating statistics person in the state for the past three years, a statewide computer programming contest winner, a black belt, SAT scores all above 700, 4.0 GPA unweighted, and he's not a bad writer either, so no, his essays did not ruin his chances before anyone jumps on that. He has been an AIME qualifier every year since 9th grade, and got 7 on the AIME one year. And I seriously can't see how hopelesslydevote got turned down, especially a 2-time USAMO qualifier what??? Yet I hear of people across my state, good but not incredible applicants, who happen to be racial minorities or girls, who got accepted. The past few years, every person from my school that was accepted has either been a racial minority, or a girl. This is really ridiculous.

MIT used to be my first choice school, but I've since lost all respect for its admissions process. I was accepted early, but there is no chance I will be attending after this latest round of affirmative action. If anyone out there can track my IP address, go ahead and give my acceptance to some wait-listed person, and hopefully, it will be someone who can get in by merit and not by racism.

Hoplesslydevote, that's insane you didn't get admitted... did you apply to Caltech?

waitlisted

Congratulations to everyone who got in! And those who didn't/got waitlisted like me, it isn't the end of the world! :)

Yes, I'm in to Caltech, but MIT was my 1st choice. sigh

wow hopeless, this is bs. to make you feel better, my friend who is a siemens regional finalist (top 60 in nation) was waitlisted. like ryuzaki, I have also lost respect for MIT admissions. this is crap.

MIT has been sliding down the U.S. News Best College list...

[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Be born female or get a sex change. [/ul]
[/li]

A little bitter at the moment, so don't take my words too seriously; but looking through this thread, I see a lot of people who should have been admitted or at least waitlisted who were not. It seems that URM females, or just females in general, are able to get in with lower test scores while ORM males need every national science competition under the sun and near-perfect scores; in some cases that still isnt enough.

totally agree. and it's not just mit. affirmative action is running wild everywhere. if only there were more people like ryuzaki who are willing to make a sacrifice to do something about it. affirmative action defeats the purpose of merit based qualifications.

affirmative action is running wild everywhere.

[/quote]

At a techie school, however, the applicant pool is even more disproportionately white/asian males so any affirmative action that tries to produce a representative class has to be harsher than at other schools.

This isn't the thread for a debate about AA. But if you come to CPW, I am sure you will be able to see that your fellow admitted students were admitted by merit. This thread is a small sample of the students who were admitted, and a highly biased sample at that.
