Is anyone else applying for this scholarship?

Yes I am! I’m not too confident about my chances but it’s a good opportunity to get some cash!

Yes, my daughter is applying to it. She started the application a few days ago. How many do they give out?

Last year they got around 2000 applications and only 550 got them. So it’s fairly competitive.

Nice, I just finished my essay for the OSU app, now I have to get started on the MSP essay.

I’m almost finished with my essay for the OSU app, but it ended up being like 450 words So now I have to narrow it down A LOT!!
I have a question, where do you go to apply for MSP? I tried to make an account and it said they were going to email me for my password but I never got an email. Am I supposed to submit my application for OSU first?
And are we supposed to get invited to apply for the program like last year’s applicants? I’m so CONFUSED!lol

My daughter sent in her application on September 1st and about a week or so later, when all her paper work was complete they contacted us via email with a password encouraging her to apply. My daughter is not an ethnic minority but I guess you would call her a geographical minority?? We live in what is considered an appalachian county in Ohio, hence, the invite. They way I understand it is for minorities and/or appalachia residents only.

Monica, I am pretty sure you are African American? So you should definitely be eligible to apply. Toni D. Ramirez was who we received the email from. Email or call the admissions dept.

I forgot, there is also a minimum GPA but I am not sure what it is…a 3.2 or 3.3?? And minimum ACT too - 23? Not sure, go to OSU website.

I got an email from Toni D. Ramirez a few days ago encouraging me to apply but I didn’t receive a password. Do I have to submit my OSU application first? And yeah I do believe it is only for minorities and Appalachia residents. I am African American so I hope that my stats won’t kill me because they’re pretty low I have no idea if that was the invite that was supposed to include the password or telling me to hurry and submit my OSU app so they can send me the password…idk
The minimum G.P.A is 3.3, ACT is 23, and Class rank is top 20%, though only two of the three are required. I better get started on that!
Out of extreme curiosity mspearl, what are your daughters stats? Last years applicants’ were extremely high for this program.

She is a 4.0 with a 28 act. Rank #1 (took act for 2nd time a few weeks ago so hoping it will go up but not counting on it…she struggles with math )

I think a compelling essay will count for a lot. Don’t get discouraged.

(my daughter says she isn’t too worried about getting into OSU but I am pretty nervous…biting my nails…this was the first application she filled out and didn’t do too well emphasizing her ec’s…and had one spelling error. Make sure your application is perfect when you do apply!)

I plan on submitting my OSU app tomorrow, after I find out if my ACT Score increased. It was my 3rd time taking it on the 10th, hopefully it increased from a 26. I’m hoping so.

My ACT didn’t go up, but I submitted my OSU app, and plan on submitting my MSP app within the next week

good luck classy!!

Aw thank you, and good luck to your daughter as well

Good luck classy and mspearl!!! I’m sure you guys will get in. I JUST sent my app out today. Now I have to write the MSP essay so I can finally be stress free!

Good Luck iMonica94. School has me so busy, but hopefully I can get the creative energy to write my essay on Sunday, and possibly send it in Tuesday. My OSU app status is now: Evaluation. I’m crossing my fingers. :)

Thank you! My app is still incomplete because of my transcripts which were sent out Sept 13…I don’t know if I should call or keep waiting. Doesn’t my app need to be complete before I can get my password for MSP?
And classy I’m sure you’ll get in. I don’t know your stats but your ACT is already good! (a lot higher than mine)

My daughter’s Morrill Scholarship application is finally complete and submitted!

does being an oos help improve your chances of this or is it kind of a race thing?

Mine was finally submitted today!!! jmcook I think being oos is good for the prominence since it’s specifically for oos students. MSP isn’t necessarily based on race, more on diversity. Being oos is diverse!

The Morrill Scholars program isn’t spefically for out of state students and it isn’t just for ethnic/racial minorities. My daughter is white and from Ohio but qualifies because she is from a county considered to be part of “appalachia.” When they say geographical diversity they don’t mean out of state, they mean parts of the country where a smaller % of kids go to college, usually because of socioeconomic factors. So if you are from an affluent neighborhood in another city outside Ohio, you don’t qualify. (unless you are racial minority) That is how I understand it. :)
