**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

Right off the bat if you’re looking to transfer into a UC in a year and need those credit hours which are necessary, I’d drop Chinese and Speech, since they’re not fulfilling any actual IGETC requirements you don’t have.
You will also not be very likely to be able to petition over the limit, due to the large amount of students vying for classes.
PE is not necessary as long as you don’t want you 2 year degree.
Oh and just so you know, you’ll only get course credit for either Literature or Language, although they can serve as Mt. Sac prerequisites to English 1C (I passed both of them as well)

They’re (SAT scores) not required for UC transfer, but it is possible they’ll ask you to submit them.
I’ll let Dainese cover anything else, as it’s 4 am and I’m too tired to think.

Edit: I would also advise you make an appointment with Linda Diaz, she’s an excellent counselor who can help facilitate your transfer.

Can I still get an appointment with her even if I’m not in the honors program yet?

And thanks a ton, sorry… haha I’ve turned nocturnal this summer. Literally.

Yeah, I got an appointment before my honors application was even in. Call right when the counseling center opens, at 8 in the morning.

cant thank you enough jet, youve been a big help and im sure we all appreciate it
especially since i dont know anything about AP credits tehe.

@renouveau - instead of making an appointment, i suggest you walk in. the summer is when the honors center is dead and linda is not ALWAYS available but its better than waiting 2 weeks just for an appointment. i can usually always get to her just walking in. just be really polite about it :)

or if u want i can go with you and she will def help you since she already knows who i am.
this option is open to anyone else as well

Renouveau,

Do you have priority registration for Fall, Winter and Spring semester? If you don’t:

I don’t want to be a downer, but I should she real with you. If you don’t have priority registration, you will NOT get all those classes in one year. Period. I took me 1.5 years to get English 1C, for example. I’m an Econ major too, so I know that all of Econ’s pre-requisites are popular classes, and fill up VERY quickly. And getting six honors classes in one year is pretty tough too.

I recommend you have a back-up plan, both a 1-year plan and a 2-year plan.

Thanks for the tip  Hopefully I can see her after I take my math placement tomorrow.

Thanks! I know it’s unrealistic haha. aand ■■■■ it took you 1.5 years to get English 1C? totally kicking myself now for not sending in AP scores earlier… I could’ve easily gotten it for Fall semester.

I just think it’s going to kind of suck stretching my time out, waiting for the classes I need… it’s reasonable in 1.5 years, right? But UC’s only take fall transfers… Which was why I was hoping I could cram it into a year, since I don’t want to spend a whole semester just waiting around. Lol maybe I should consider USC more, since they do take spring admits, and aren’t as strict with pre-reqs?

im not sure if USC takes spring admits (i should know lol >.<)
and yes USC is NOT as strict with pre-reqs because they want your money.
but the more you have done the better since it saves you money.

and it took me 1.5 years to get eng 1C because i started at eng 68. so i had to work my way up :(

try to take ENG 1CH. carolyn (the director of honors) works REALLY hard to make sure that more eng 1CH classes get open and she does a great job of doing so. she also talks to profs to try to get them to add 2-3 mroe students over the limit.

for CAL and UCLA, cramming all those pre-reqs can be difficult simply because you will have a difficult time getting the classes, but if u do then all the power to ya.

I just came back from the honors center and got some info from carolyn
-last year there were 44,000 mtsac students.
-800 are honors students.
-mtsac is the biggest CC in the country.
-more students than UCLA.
-connect 4 is now going to be limited on some science classes
-there will be a human trafficking conference (i suggest all of you do this. its great research opportunity)

-

LOL yea I’m not going to try to transfer to UCLA/Cal in a year. It’s too ridiculous getting a hold of classes. Nice to know that it is, however, hypothetically possible.

What is this human trafficking conference?

I’m going to be the crazy ■■■■ who tries transferring to Cal in a year. Bleh.
The trick is finding something that will give you priority registration; I personally am going to attempt to get into AS since I don’t qualify for EOPS/ASPIRE /sigh

And what is this human trafficking conference?

@jet - you can also register at diff CC’s, sometimes its worth the hassle.
cuz i know SMC and PCC give their honors students priority and i asked carolyn why we dont and she said its because we have 800 + honors students and most of them will use the priority to register for NON honors classes. furthermore, there are thousands of mtsac students that are qualified for honors but simply dont know about it lol…so you can imagine where “priority” no longer becomes priority if everyone was an honors student.

she also informed me (although this probably wont be in effect for a couple years) that she is making a huge effort to get priority for honors students that are 3.5 GPA and up and are a sophomore. that way there WONT be that many priority students fighting for honors classes and this gives all the sophomore honor students their chance to finally get much needed classes to transfer.

the human trafficking conference is a campus wide conference on human trafficking. here is a link that defines what human trafficking is what-is-human-trafficking[/url”>Human-Trafficking]what-is-human-trafficking

if you dont know what it is…dont wrry , i didnt know what it was. and if you do…then cool.

so basically at this conference you will present a paper/project/research that you conducted with a honors professor to a small audience. your presentation will be anywhere from 5-10 minutes and the audience is about 20-40. i think its a great opportunity for something to add to your application and its actually a very insightful conference. at the conference there will be lots of honors students, students, and faculty presenting their research on human trafficking.

i participated as a presenter last year
im a psych major and i did my research on helping behavior…what factors contribute to prevent people from helping, what factors promote it, etc. because obviously people involved in human trafficking are those in need of help. but not just human traffickign victims but anyone who is a victim.

so this is basically an opportunity for you to get some minor research onto your application.

SIDE NOTE: there is usually a UCI conference as well every year…not sure about thsi year but there shuold be one. but this one is even BIGGER and you can get published at this conference and win scholarships etc. and you can present the same research you did for the human trafficking conference if you choose to do so. both are great, and if you can…id def take advantage of both.

for more info on these conferences, i suggest talking to carolyn/linda about it since they will be recruiting students for it. you do need to write an abstract, paper, speech etc. also some honors profs will give you extra credit for participating. :)

Hello, I recently graduated with a BA and am going back to school for an engineering degree. I have been studying for the math 180 and chem 50 placement tests… can anybody tell me from experience how difficult they are. I have the study guide provided by the testing center for both… however the chem guide is somewhat vague.

thanks in advance

ive taken the chem test but really dont remember much…
im sure others have recently taken those 2 tests, sooo please chime in! :D

@boober I hadn’t taken math in two years and I placed into the highest calculus, so if you’re fairly decent at concepts it’s a really easy test.

@Dainese Yeah, I’m aware of what human trafficking is, I just didn’t know about the conference. Sounds like a good thing to get involved in, just going to have to get over my dislike of public speaking.

thanks jet… i actually took the same test 3 yrs ago and also got into 180 but didnt go that route since i was going for a BA. Im not too worried about the math test so much as the chem test being that ive never taken it and they dont give much info on the test format itself.

anybody else ever taken the chem placement test?

@boober - if anything you can take it now and if you fail then you can retake it again in 3 months just in time to register for the winter session. and this way you will know wahts on the test and who knows…you might even pass haha

if you miss the passing grade by a point or two the director may just bump you up.

@jet - cool. def do so, it was well worth it. and dnot wrry, i also have a deadlly fear of public speaking. i seriously practiced my speech for 252353161363 hours and was still shaking when i went up haha. it helps to let the audience know about ur stage fright. i told them i was nervous and their laughter made it a little better. Gl!

i might be volunteering at the human trafficking conference so i hope to see u there :D

its turns out its pretty crucial for me to pass both tests… they’ll pull my scholarship if i dont get into both classes

oh boy…your best bet is to get tutoring for both subjects then…
mtsac offers free tutoring at the LAC center. its behind the library…youll hafta ask someone for a direct location cuz its hard to describe.

when i took the chem test i havnt touched chem for…almsot 4 -5 years and i msised the passing grade by 2 points. but i got tutoring for it. i basically went over all the subjects listed on the study guide and even then everything felt really really vague.

the math test you can get tutoring for as well at the same place.

SIDENOTE: i just had an idea! so as you know there are many math/chem placement tests. why dont u go to one of the students who are about to take the test and maybe ask them kindly to help you review what is on the test with you afterwards. maybe you can treat them to lunch or something…

i probably shouldnt be encouraging that but…err…lol

If you’re looking for a study guide for the tests, you can get an AP or SAT II review book for Chem, that will cover all of the basic concepts. Getting into 180 you’ll want to know all the stuff that you can do in pre-calculus and trigonometry without a calculator.
Simplifying multi-variable equations, etc. There should be a basic study guide online.

thanks to the both of you for the responses… I actually just picked up a ap chem book yesterday. I was hesitant because i didnt know if that would cover subjects on the placement test… but i looked into it and ap chem is equivalent to a college level intro chem class, so that book should be dead on.

as for the math advice, ive studied through a algebra book and working my way through a pre-cal book right now. I also have a trig book im going to be going through as well… but it slipped my mind to especially pay close attention to problems which dont require calculators since they arent permitted for the test.

thanks again to the both of you for the help

Good news, I took my math placement! So I’m looking to probably add Econ and math.

Do you guys know of any good econ teachers LOL… I checked on ratemyprof. and the reviews are all pretty unfavorable…
