Official National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist/Commended Thread

This should probably go in the Scholarships section instead of the SAT and ACT test section but this way I can get more replies. Post what you think the cutoffs will be or what they are or what they were. I'm getting this post started to help people who are on the cutoff line between being a semifinalist or commended or are on the cutoff line between commended and being part of the average blob who receives no recognition. Post whatever. Also, try to include some past National Merit Semifinalist cutoffs (and not just from last year).

I'm from Cali and got 216 this year do it's gonna be close for me.

There's already a whole list here in CC regarding the cutoff level for each state. All I know is that for Texas it was 216 this year.

You mean last year? This year's cutoffs aren't out yet.

I'm sure they meant the 99 percentile score cut off.
I'm in WI and the 99% cut off was 212. Usually, the cut off for Semifinalist here is from 209 to 211.
I got a 210...

To be commended iv heard its usually 199-201. If the cutoff is 201, does this mean you are commended with a 201 or just missed it?

What's the cutoff for MA? (crosses fingers) I got a 220.

A cutoff index of 201 means you just made commended. Maryland's cutoff index in the past few years has been 222. Don't give up hope, though. It might go down this year. Is 99 percentile this year 212? Anybody who got a 212 who can tell me? If 212 is 99 percentile, it is a good sign.

If you get 99%, it does not mean you are going to be a semi finalist.

Cutoff for NY this year should be around 218.

I got a 209 (98%), so I'll be commended.

Texas cut off for last year was 216....and I got 215 :(

Nj cutoff was 221, and I got a freaking 217

Sorry guys, paulhomework was right. I meant LAST year the cutoff was 216 in TX.

I heard last couple of year's, Calif cutoff was 216, but all commended were at ~200.

while it is true that you might not get SemiF by getting a 99%, it is also possible in other states to get a 98% yet still get the SemiF.
Baisically, the percentiles are useless for predicting whether you're gonna get the award.
The definite result only comes in next fall i hear... eh

The percentiles aren't useless. If the mininum score required to get in the 99th percentile goes down, it suggests that people did worse and the cutoff will go down as well. You're right, there are many people who get in the 99th percentile who do not make it. Percentiles are by nation, not individual state. 214 was required to get 99th percentile last year, it may be only 212 this year.

ah, i see how it works.
Well, at least in my state WI, i heard some 98% people do get "in", whereas in some other states, like CA perhaps, even some 99% don't get in. (in that sense, it doesn't help to know % because each states have diff. cutoffs...?)
Can we even compare this year's scores with the cutoff score from last year? From what i know, the test changed quite a bit this year (harder perhaps)

If you're right that 214 was last year's 99% and it was 212 this year, I sure hope the cutoff went down

im from FL, got a 214...and that was the cutoff for last year...semifinalist now, not sure when we find out about finalist..

i'm from CO, my counselor said 211 or so is the cutoff here usually, so i trust that. i got a 219 and i'm a semifinalist. also, i hear that like the vast majority of semifs make finalist. anybody know how much grades etc. that you have to send factor into that? my score's ok, obviously, according to what i've heard, but my other stuff could only detract from it... my grades are ok still, but they have far from an upward trend. and i know my school sent mid-term grades from this last semester after i'd been out for a couple of weeks so those reflected badly.
any idea?

would the cutoff for a state ever jump 4 points in one year? like last year it was 216 for cali, would it be possible for it to jump over 220 this year?

i got a 200, and i think the cutoff for commended will be 199, since inthe psat guide booklet it says it should be around 96 percentile. It might also be lower this year becuase the top 55,000 scorers will be commended or semis instead of the usual top 50,000.
