Official National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist/Commended Thread

I got a 227. What's the cutoff for NY? I think it's going to be close for me.

Courtette - Good luck from me also

Anyone else hear from Natl Merit folks?

dualityim, last year's cut-off was 218 I think, so by no means wil it be close for you, you have nothing to worry about. I, on the other hand, have a 217, so maybe they'll lower it and I'll make semifinalist, but I won't hold my breath...

Thanks jmarsh. I guess it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I imagined that for a populous state like NY, the cutoff would be about 230. Whew...

For people who are juniors this year and who were wondering about cutoffs for next year . . . .

There was a list of cutoffs posted in another thread.

Also, I was looking at the last two year semifinalist cutoff stats and a few states jumped up 4 points, but that's pretty much the maximum you should expect your state to jump up in.

I've heard rumors that the 99% has gone down, so it is possible that the semifinalist cutoff will also go down.

In Florida, the cutoff has been 214 for the last two years, and it's usually around 213 or 214, so hopefully a 219 is good enough :)

Oh and the highest for any state's semifinalist cutoff is 222. So, if you're well above that, you should have nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps.

when the cutoff is, say 215, and you get a 215. Does that mean you are cut off? Or do you make semifinalist?

Did people get notified of finalist standing already...? I haven't heard anything. Do they also contact you if you DIDN'T make it?

I think finalist notification is in Feb.

The cut-off score is the score you have to make. So if your state's cut-off is 215 and you get 215, you're in.

I thought that was semifinalist level. I know I made that because of my score (231)
but for finalist, they evaluate your grades, SAT scores and essay.

Does the essay really count? Not that it matters now, since I should be finding out about finalist-ism SOON, but I sort of wonder...

jersey 206... 97%

If you look at the numbers, most semifinalists make it to finalist level. I think those who don't are ones who didn't bother to apply/had a horrendous SAT/bad grades, or had an offensively bad essay. In other words, I don't think the essay matters that much. But, it is used by some to determine whether you get money...

how do they choose scholars? is there another application?

I really hope the commended cutoff is 199, because if it's 200 or 201, I'll be kinda ticked that one or two questions (aka my stupidity) caused me to lose that.
