Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Scores are out. A 215 was good enough to be a semi-finalist in Wisconsin!!

congrats Wiscfan! Isn’t there anybody else out there that has any info? There must be somebody else who has heard! Waiting with a bubble score on the East Coast!

Any predictions or scores for Oregon yet?

@Wiscfan: congratulations! Do you know anyone closer last year’s WI cutoff (209) who made it or didnt make it?

Yay, people are getting results! Congrats wiscfan!

Do not know any other scores in WI, but bet the cut off will be close to 210 or so. Just happy to be a semi-finalists and am surprised that no one else has heard. My school got the results in the mail today, so I’m guessing others must have gotten their lists as well.

And so it begins…

Thanks, wiscfan (and so am I–a Wisconsin fan, that is)

10(?) Boarding school regions
No scores reported yet.
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 200
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

What school district in WI released results? Just wondering if Madison will tell kids automatically, or do we need to phone counselor. How did you find out?

If the scores decrease this year as some have predicted then my son may make the cutoff. Fingers crossed.

Now this is most certainly a coincidence… However, my son, who was not home to take the call, just got a call from University of Tulsa. They told my husband that my son was “a very desirable student” and they wanted to introduce their school to him.

I’m trying not to read anything into this but haven’t I read that there have been times when a student got “notice” because they heard from a university?

I am sooo ready to get the word on Tennessee cutoffs!

Good luck to all of you!

buddyolboy: I discussed Oregon’s prediction yesterday. No word on scores yet.

Congrats in Wisconsin! How exciting and what a relief at the same time! :)

Chilling with a 225 in CA. How apprehensive should I be?

225 is golden for the Golden State (any state really). On a national level the cutoff for 99+% (essentially the top 7500 testtakers) was 222. You are three points above that!

^ Slightly more apprehensive than me, with a 225 in TX. So, not apprehensive.

Waiting anxiously here in VA with a 224.

So the national cutoff was INCLUSIVE of 222???

Yes, the cutoff for the 99+ percentile range on the national level was inclusive of 222. See page 3 of this report. http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/understanding-psat-nmsqt-scores.pdf

The 99+ percentile range is the top one half of one percent of testtakers, or somewhere between 6000 and 7500 people. There are 16,000 who make NMSF.

On rare occasions one or two of the highest performing states have had NMSF cutoffs that are the same as the national 99+ cutoff, but not for the past few years.

Congratulations, Wiscfan!!

Correction. 2 years ago the 99+ cutoff was 222 and there were 2 states (MA and DC) with NMSF cutoffs of 223.

So, with the exception of PERHAPS the highest performing states, what you are saying is that anyone with a 222 or higher is NMSF. Correct?
