Official Northeastern ED/EA/RD Results Thread for H.S Class of 2016

When will EA decisions come out?

EA decisions are already out. They came out in December. RD is not done. There were some notified last week I believe. Those were thought to be top candidates who received major merit awards. The RD decisions will be out by 4/1 according to NU.

oops, I was deferred to RD. When will this come out?

By April 1.

Mid-March

@TomSrOfBoston Yeah I contacted them about why I saw nothing about finances at all, and they said that I still hadn’t submitted my parents’ tax returns. Even though it didn’t say anything about tax returns on the financial aid checklist.

Were they able to give you your financial aid info after you sent them your tax returns?

(Didn’t get to read teacher/counselor recs, but will assume)

DS: ACCEPTED. Offered Dean’s Scholarship (or was it Presidents? --can’t remember!)

Loved the school when he visited. Decent GPA (over 4.1), took a handful of APs, took linear alg and organic chem after AP Calc BC and AP Chem. Good leadership.

Good luck everyone!

[aB][asize=4][acolor=#008000]Decision: Accepted **

Applied (ED,EA,RD): RD

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send
ACT (breakdown): 32 Composite (35 English, 32 Reading, 31 Science, 29 Math)
SAT II: US History (740), Physics (660)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.34 (W), I don’t know my unweighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 10/230
AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), English Lang (3)
IB (place score in parenthesis): My school doesn’t have IB
Senior Year Course Load: Honors Spanish III, AP Calc AB, AP English Lit, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP US Gov
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None that I know of

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Band (Field Captain, Drum Major), Show Choir, Theater, Student Council, LEO Club, Yearbook Committee, JETS.
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: Over 100 hours of service, including an unpaid internship at my state legislature.
Summer Activities: Theater, internship at State House, community service in my local library.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9/10. I focused on how I struggled with learning how to talk. There were neurological obstacles that made it more difficult than normal children; some of my doctors even said that I would always be mute. But despite that, my perseverance eventually allowed me to speak.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Can’t say for sure, since I’ve waived my access, but I think they’re pretty good.

Teacher Rec #1: My English teacher. I’ve had her for two years, she knows I’m a good student and that I bring a unique perspective to the books we read. 8/10
Teacher Rec #2: My Physics teacher. I’ve had him for two years and knows I’m a good student. 8/10
Counselor Rec: Not sure.
Additional Rec: State Representative. I spent a summer interning for her and she knows my interest in politics. 9/10.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Political Science
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I don’t know
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have PDDNOS (a condition on the autism spectrum). This was responsible for my difficulty with talking, which I discussed in my essay. I also obsoleted my IEP through my determination to be like my classmates.

Reflection

Strengths: I think my internship really helped me because it not only gave me experience in the field of public service, but also conveyed my love for politics on my application. I also believe my essay showed how I’m unique and determined to succeed.

Weaknesses: I’m light on leadership positions and awards. I felt like I could have done more if I was more proactive in my underclassmen years. I wouldn’t consider this a weakness, but I feel like I should have picked my gov teacher for a recommendation. Even though I’m certain the teachers I picked wrote a decent letter, looking back, I think she could have written a more glowing one since I actively participate in that class, encourage discussion, and show enthusiasm for the subject. Finally, I didn’t think it helped that I was neither a legacy nor a student at a competitive high school.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I can’t really speak on behalf of the admissions committee, aside from the fact that they liked my application.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I was accepted to Franklin Pierce, but I’m waiting to hear back from eleven other schools.

General Comments : I know you’ve already heard this from a hundred admissions officers, guidance counselors, and users, but just put your best foot forward. Find something you’re really passionate about or something that makes you unique and (tastefully) harp upon it in your application.

I got denied
Sat1:2160
Sat2: 790 math 760physics
Gpa(out of 4): 3.4
Assume great ec and recs
I believe I got denied cause of low gpa and maybe cause I’m an international student
Good luck to all

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was deferred the first time because I wasn’t able to give them a good idea of who I was. I truly believe I was accepted because of the efforts I made after I was deferred. I’m a good applicant on paper, but I think that the extra letter I submitted showing my interest in Northeastern really made a difference and allowed me to be accepted.

Reflection
Strengths: ACT score, LOTs of community service
Weaknesses: lack of school involvement/leadership positions. lack of course rigor.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: test scores and pretty decent essay
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to BC, Brandeis, UCONN so far. Rejected from Northwestern.

General Comments : Overall I’m super happy-- NEU was my top school, and I was extremely worried about what I’d do if I didn’t get accepted. On top of that I received a 13k/year scholarship, but NEU is still hard to afford for my family. I am also conflicted between NEU and BC; definitely did not expect to get into BC.

Best of luck to the rest of you guys!

@thesebajun , just curious, if you go to BC, what major would you take? Physics, Math? BC doesn’t offer Engineering.
