***Official Northeastern University Class of 2021 Regular Decision Applicants Results ONLY***

Haven’t seen a thread for this so here is the official thread for Northeastern class of 2021 Regular Decision applicants. The earliest NEU released RD in the past 3 years for the top applicants batch is 2/8. Most of top applicants (top 25% of RD admits and people in the honors program) heard their decisions on 2/8, 2/9, 2/10, or 2/11. You will hear the decision by 2/16 if you are in the top 25% of admit pool. If you think you are in that pool, keep checking your email and the spam folder because NEU will email you in the next few days to let you know that your admission decision is available on their site. The admits not in the top 25% will receive their admission decisions by 4/1. Goodluck to Everyone!

Exciting!

Heads up - what you copied from the other thread isn’t something that is really true. The top 25% do not hear back so early - the group is much smaller than that (probably closer to 2-5% of the applicant pool), while most will hear back mid March. I would not expect to hear back in February, even if you are a top applicant by stats, simply because it sets overly high expectations that are likely to disappoint. Northeastern also uses those early decisions holistically, as with the rest of the admissions process. You can see that trend if you read through EA decisions.

Looking at your profile specifically @tawhidkhn63 , you’re very much likely to get in, but it’s a complete toss-up if you hear before March.

@PengsPhils @asinineayo I got this email today after I asked a NEU admissions officer about the dates of decision

"Good afternoon, Tawhid;

Thank you for reaching out and following up on our decision release date. I understand that you have found some information on College Confidential but, as always, I will continue to tell all students that final admission decisions will be released by April 1st.

I hope this helps but please feel free to reach out with anything additional.

Enjoy the rest of your day"

^^^That is the standard reply. It is all they will tell you.

Decision: Accepted

I got into the Honors Program with scholarships! They emailed me at 8:02 PM.

Short Biography: I was born in Bangladesh. At age 4, I moved to Japan because of my mother pursuing her PhD in Immunology there. We lived there for 6 years, and in 5th grade I moved to Philadelphia where my mom worked at Upenn. We stayed in Philly for 2 years and then we moved to Baltimore where my mom worked at the NIH. We lived in Baltimore for 3 years from 7th grade to 9th grade. At the end of 9th grade, we moved to Albany, Upstate NY. I lived in Albany for sophomore year, and then I moved to Gainesville, Florida where my mom worked at UF. I stayed in Florida for junior year, and now as a senior I am back in Albany. I am fluent in Bengali, Japanese, English. Highly proficient in French, Spanish, and Arabic.

Reflection

Strengths: Now I don’t really think I ever had any. I guess I had some good looking academics going for me, and I am a National Merit semifinalist. I also know 6 languages.
Weaknesses: I feel like I am mediocre. I haven’t won Intel or won a major award. I feel like students going to top schools excel at a particular field and put a lot of time and effort in that passion like research in Molecular biology, competing in US Math Olympiad team, etc
What would you have done differently?: I don’t really know

General Comments & Advice:
I got a $27,000 honors scholarship offer.

Actually I was hoping someone could clarify how that works with National Merit scholarships? If I attend and get the $30,000, that would just add $3,000 to my current scholarship? I mean, there’s no way it would get added to the Honors scholarship, right? Thanks for the help I’m a very confused girl lol. I didn’t even realize NE was releasing decisions so this was a pretty pleasant surprise.

Reflection

Strengths: In my opinion, I have good grades/test scores, and some decent extracurriculars and leadership experiences.
Weaknesses: I didn’t show any demonstrated interest, and my extracurriculars aren’t stellar. No real awards or anything like that besides school-specific/test score based ones.

What would you have done differently?: I would have shown more demonstrated interest.
Where else did you apply? Columbia, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Santa Clara, Stanford, University of Chicago, Washington University in St. Louis, Yale (EA, deferred)

Volunteer/Community Service:
-Member of my school’s Peer Leaders group that focuses on various volunteering activities
-I volunteer at a local cat shelter when I have time
Summer Experience:
-I had an internship at the town’s chamber of commerce. It’s a really small one so everything was done in-house and I got to do everything from sending out post-event surveys to soliciting sponsors for the end of the summer fundraiser. Other than that I worked about 30 hours at the grocery store and 10 at the pizza shop.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Essays: Common App was a 10/10. I wrote about how at a young age I succumbed to pressure to assimilate and how I learned to love my culture by cooking with my mother. Also mentioned how I wanted to create more positive representation for POC in the media as a result. It’s definitely my best piece of writing.

Teacher Recommendation #1: First letter was from my Calc AB teacher. I talk with her like every other day after school and we have a really great relationship. She wrote about how my best grade wasn’t in Calc but that I was one of the few kids who would seek out extra help when it was needed. I’d give it a 9.
Teacher Recommendation #2: This one was from my sophomore history teacher and my current AP Gov teacher. I didn’t ask to read it because in all honesty he’s a bit intimidating, but I also talk with him frequently and I’m his best student and we have a great relationship outside of the classroom. He wrote a rec for me last year for a scholarship and if he reused that then he wrote about how I have a genuine love of learning for the sake of learning and how enthusiastic I am about history/the government. If it’s what I think he wrote then it’s definitely a 10.
Counselor Rec: I’d also give this a 9. My counselor is also the advisor for our volunteer group and wrote about how involved I get in the fundraisers and mentioned how I manage to do well in school while working so much.

Reflection

Strengths: Definitely all of the supplementary materials, especially my essay. The recommendation letters I got to read were really touching and showed what numerical stats couldn’t so I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave me a boost.
Weaknesses: Standardized test scores lol. I was pretty sure my chances were ruined with that 540 Math II score, but I guess not!
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My prospective major is Communication/ Media Studies so I think my essay, which demonstrated my creative writing skills, helped a lot. And my scores weren’t too bad when it came to the humanities portions so I guess my (lack of) skills in the STEM parts didn’t matter as much. I think my
What would you have done differently?: Nothing really.
Where else did you apply? Boston University, Brown, Emerson, Emmanuel, UMass Boston, UPenn, and USC.

General Comments & Advice:
Congratulations to all the other early but regular admits out there! And to all the other applicants still waiting, don’t stress! Honestly, I’m still in shock at getting in at all, let alone receiving an early notice and getting into the Honors Program. I don’t have any major awards and I find some of my own stats pretty laughable, but I definitely think my passion and ambition were evident in my application. So if you’re also worried about your chances just take a look at me and have some hope, and if you’re also in disbelief at my acceptance, join the club; I’m thinking of getting letterman jackets.

Congrats! Still waiting

forgot to say my major is mechanical engineering

I got 20k scholarship per year. Anyone know when they announce how much financial aid they will give? According to the college board net price calculator, my expected financial aid plus my 20k scholarship is enough to cover my entire cost (tuition plus all other expenses). How can I confirm my financial aid amount so I can know for sure that I am getting a full ride.
