Decision: Accepted
Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2310—Math: 800, CR: 770, Writing: 740. Didn’t submit 2280—Math: 800, CR: 740, Writing: 740
ACT: didn’t take
SAT II: submitted Literature: 740, Math II: 800, didn’t submit Biology E: 710 or Biology M: 700
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9 (junior year I had a C- first semester, a B- and a B second semester)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): unavailable
AP (place score in parenthesis): Calculus AB (5), Chemistry (5), English Lang (5), Biology (4), Chinese (5), Music Theory (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis): none
Senior Year Course Load: AP Government, AP Statistics, Journalism, Physics, Orchestra, AP Literature
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Girl Scouts Gold Award, National Merit Semifinalist (don’t know when Finalist or Scholar results are out, PSAT score of 1500/1520), AP Scholar Award (idk everyone has this, granted to students who achieve grades of 3.0; 3 or higher on at least 3 AP Exams)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
• Journalism (staff writer then Opinions Editor then Editor-in-Chief)
• Writer for Junior State of America newspaper sophomore and junior year
• Girl Scouts Senior Patrol Leader (participated 5 years)
• Cello: played for 6 years, Cellist in California Youth Symphony Senior (was in CYS for 4 years), MTAC Level 10, Youth Focus Gold Champion
• Piano: played for 11 years, MTAC Level 10, numerous awards for US Open
• Research at Stanford University (I didn’t do any actual research, but I learned about botany in her lab and did experiments and stuff, but didn’t write any papers or anything) this was only first semester of junior year

Job/Work Experience: English tutor
Volunteer/Community service: a lot of random stuff, with Girl Scouts, chinese schools, local community events, so I have The President’s Volunteer Service Award Gold for all four years (100 years of service freshman year, 250 years for each of sophomore, junior, and senior year, so 850 years total)

Summer Activities:
Senior:
• California Scholastic Press Association Journalism Workshop (it’s absolutely amazing and I really encourage everyone in California to go, the website and application process is slightly sketchy but the program itself, two weeks at San Luis Obispo over the summer, is AMAZING)
• Toured with CYS Senior orchestra in Europe
• Interned at California State Senator Bob Wieckowski’s office over the summer
Junior
• FASCA summer training (3 weeks)
• Toastmasters (2 weeks), didn’t write about that
Sophomore

• UC Berkeley ATDP, Advanced Biotechnology (A), didn’t write about that
• this local summer camp counselor thing, didn’t write about that
Freshman
• American E Friend, taught English in Taiwan, didn’t write about that

Essays: wrote my Asianness but in a unique way (10/10), Why Northwestern (10/10)

Teacher Recommendation: Journalism teacher (didn’t read, but probably really good he likes me a lot), AP Chem teacher (I wrote it myself, I made myself sound good even though I got B’s in his class and only had A’s because I got a 5 on the AP test), AP Lang teacher (I read it and made a lot of edits, she hardly knew me but I made it sound decent)

Counselor Rec: no clue cause I hardly know her, probably okay. They make us turn in a form and explain why we want to study the major we’re planning to study, and I think they just copy-paste into a format, and I tried to write that really well so maybe that’s why.
Additional Rec: didn’t submit
Interview: didn’t have one

AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calc AB (5), AP Chinese Lang (5), AP Physics 1 (4), AP Lang (4), AP World (3), AP Comp Sci (1) Am self-studying to retake this May.

Senior Year Course Load: Adv Calc, AP Micro/Macro Econ, Cisco Networking Academy (2 periods, 3 credits), Senior English, AP Physics 2, AP Gov

Extracurriculars:
CHESS CLUB (Prez 11,12 VP 10) (I display a lot of passion with chess and don’t waste my time with other clubs just to appear “well-rounded.”)
Sports: Nothing competitive. A lot of pick-up basketball in my summers. And Competitive Marching Band for 3 years if that counts.
Job/Work Experience: McDonald’s Crew Worker.
Volunteer/Community service: Nothing special, have about 70 hours and school requires 40. Volunteered at Seattle Jingle Bell Run, Bellevue Strawberry Festival, all that good stuff.
Extras: I run my own Chess Coaching Business! (Self-taught chess player and chess coach. Taught 11 students (Age ranged 5yrs-retired adult), 5 reg. weekly students. One student increased rating 900-1400 in 3 months. Created a personal training curriculum for rapid improvement. Received praise from parents about child’s improvement/interest.)
Created extremely detailed model airplanes from scratch and have created a website (kinda) to display and they are really my talent.
Awards?: Outstanding soloist in Eastshore Wmea Jazz festival, HS state chess champs 2014 in WA, 1st place chess individual premier 2015

Common App Essay: Pretty s. I read it again a few weeks after submitting and rewrote it for other schools.
Why Northwestern: Much, much better. Talked about a lame childhood experience and made it sound dramatic and life-changing. Mentioned specifics such as a specific student and a former professor.
Teacher Recommendation: Not very good. 4 of my 7 junior year teachers left my school and I didn’t have a lot to choose from and never spent time giving a good impression in class so I cannot expect any better. I’d say 7/10, maybe higher if I’m lucky. Also had 2 recs but only asked one to send since 2 mediocure reports look worse than just one. *
Update, teacher recs were probably very good

Counselor Rec: An ok relationship, should be really good nonetheless, maybe 9/10
Other:
Revisiting The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." Writing a book summarizing key points and personal thoughts/experiences about each habit plus ideas for implementation. Condensed format ideal for busy people. Habit One done so far, plan to publish as an EBook.

Applying for Financial Aid?: Yes, definitely
State (if domestic applicant): Washington State
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian-American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Currently 0.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Just wanted to get in
Strengths: Focused passion, grades, maybe essay supplement
Weaknesses: essay, maybe recs

General Comments: College Admissions is brutal! Don’t despair if you do not get into your favorite schools. My best advice is to do everything in your power to maximize you admission chances, play it smart and keep your faith.
