Official Northwestern class of 2017 RD thread

Am I the only one who hasn’t received his acceptance package yet!!?? :o

It doesn’t matter too much, Rishav, since the FA info isn’t in it anyway. That apparently won’t be available until 4/1. I mean it’s nice to have a letter, but there’s not much additional info in there.

We’re still pretty euphoric about getting that congratulatory email though.

@tougis - Yeah. Fin aid packages will be uploaded by evening on April 1st.

Just a bit anxious. And over excited. :D

I’ve seriously been waiting for FA at the sound of the mailman all week… #dying
In other news, I think I want to live in Hinman… Anyone else doing any dorm research?

I just want FA to come… I want to click that accept button SO BADLY.

I am tempted to click accept now. I know that I’m going to go regardless of financial aid, but to keep up appearances with my dad, I’ll wait until Monday. ;)

@kk2013 I’ve been looking at housing since last Friday, and I also like Hinman. Right now I’m between Hinman, Allison, and Willard Res College.

@kk2013, @kaydsosa Why are you guys looking at Hinman- what’s appealing about it to you guys?
I’ve been looking up Youtube videos for some student opinions but haven’t had much luck with them- I’ve really only had the site to go off on.
I’ve been looking at Elder and Allison, but now I’m starting to lean towards Allison just because it’s on south campus and it’s closer to some of the classes I may be taking?

@kaydsosa and@icepulse,
I went to NU and lived at both Hinman and Allison, although that was more than a few years ago :slight_smile:
I liked them both! Hinman is smaller and harder to get into.
South campus rocks!

My S’s financial aid was posted today. I think around 5:00 so some of you might want to check again.
It brought us great news!

@stringtriomom , how close was Allison to your classes? What were some pros and cons of living there? Anything you could tell me/us would be great. (:

I’m thinking about doing a residential college.

@icepulse
So you have to understand that this was many years ago! But the location is great if you have south campus classes, or if you just like living with musicians, artists, theater people, journalism majors, etc. Or if you want to be close to the library…
I liked the atmosphere there, fairly calm…but then it was all female at the time. Hinman is also nice, but very small and difficult to get into and to stay at. Unless they changed this, if you don’t get a really great housing lottery number, you will end up at a different dorm after a year. Take a look at the map to see where your classes are and where you would like to spend time. Also, unless its different now, you need to go back to your residence for dinning so make sure that will work as well. It could all be different now, so do check!

@stringtriomom
Yeah I would definitely prefer to live around those types of people- especially considering that I’m a musician myself. (:
Did you have a job during your time at Northwestern- or at least while you were a freshman? If so, how was it balancing that with your academic life?
I’m likely going to have to get a job on campus or something because my parents will be living in Minnesota and we only have a couple of family friends in Illinois (that we haven’t even met) so I’ll essentially be on my own.

I’ll make sure to check up on those things!
Where did you like to spend time/favourite study and hang out spots?

I’m sorry I’m bombarding you with questions haahaha but I haven’t been to Illinois, my parents went to college out of the country, and I’m an only child so this whole college experience thing is very new to me. :P

FINANCIAL AID IS UP! AHHHHHHHH

Anyways, I like Hinman because it has food in it, it’s South campus (away from the major frats and partiers, and filled with the artsy people I tend to love) and super close to Evanston. Also, it has places to hang out in in the dorm so it (hopefully) will have a greater sense of community… There are a few other, smaller reasons, too.

Has anyone else looked at their online account for their financial aid and scholarship info? Just wondering if it is really true that NU doesn’t give much in the way of scholarships? So disappointing to see the numbers. There goes the top college choice.

[The 2012 Freshman Housing Guide | North by Northwestern](http://northbynorthwestern.com/story/the-2012-freshman-housing-guide/)

^ This has got reviews, pics and a lot of other stuff. :D

Ok. So I am in a dilemma now, After reading on stuff - I’d like to live in the South Campus. But then again, I’m an Engg major - which means that my classes will be up North(correct me if I’m wrong). I’ve heard(or rather read) that the walk is dreadful, especially in the winter.

Anyone who’s facing the same dilemma?? Anyone present/ex students who lived in South Campus and walked up to North campus for classes?? What are your thoughts on this?

Also, right now - my main criteria for housing selection has been
—> Dining Halls.
—> Close Knit Community. Neither a party dorm nor an unsocial one(Allison is unsocial I think?)
—> Cleanliness/newness.
—> Air Conditioning would be nice to have.
—> Proximity to Downtown Evanston and all the convenience stores. (Though as someone pointed out… being on North Campus helps curtail your uwarranted expenditure!! Haha)

Anything else I should consider when making housing choices??
Thanks a lot!! :D

@kk2013 - Are you certain??

The FA website still states

@rishav17 Yes! I know down to the exact decimal! It might not be up for everyone, but it just cause my entire family to start planning and discussing (it looks like I’m going!!!)

@producer16 I thought they were supposed to be really good with the moneys! (they were pretty nice with me, and awesome for one of my friends last year).

I’ll be a CogSci major, so I’m thinking south campus will be best for me class-wise. I’m still not entirely sure about the accuracy of that though.
And @rishav, really? I’ve heard that Allison is pretty decent in terms of socialness?

I definitely don’t want to be in Bobb- I’ve heard that’s a major party zone and plus it’s on North campus. I’m really not interested in the whole frats/sororities scene.

@icepulse - Allison, after the renovation is now almost a hotel kind of a place where, if reviews are to be believed, people seldom venture out of their rooms/dorms.

Bobb is a strict no for me.
I am mostly looking at the residential colleges right now. And the ones with a dining hall.

@kk2013 - Ohh great!! :)
