Reflection
Strengths: my supplementary essay got me in for sure. I met the NU president at my high school (my boarding school really is trying to be a feeder school to northwestern and has a good relationship with them etc) and that out the cherry on top. I had visited several times and I knew the campus probably better than most other students applying. Again, mentioning that I met the NU President helped me get in because it showed demonstrated interest. Also a strong ACT score should help you get in, 33+. Everyone I know who had a 33+ always got in.
Weaknesses: GPA. Since my school has such good relations with NU, NU knows good applicants. I had a much lower GPA than most other students who got into NU from my school. Definitely applying early increased my chances.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no where else yet, but I’m happy I got into NU!
General Comments: write a good supplemental essay. NU really wants people to come. They love demonstrated interest. They hate people who want to come for the name/prestige. If you live nearby and you don’t visit, you won’t get in.

Cats 2018! Good luck future WildCats!

Decision: Accepted

SAT I (breakdown): 800R/710M/680W/2190 overall/1510M+R
ACT: N/A

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Public Forum debate state championship qualifier/Octofinalist at Yale and Manchester-Essex tournaments[/ul]

Subjective:

[ul]
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Public Forum debate (team captain), founder of our school’s satirical newspaper, Lifesmarts academic competition (captain, state champions two year running), High School Quiz Show (captain), National Honor Society, French club (President)
Job/Work Experience: Spent the past three summers volunteering at a local summer camp-wrote a pretty stellar essay about it.
Volunteer/Community service:
Summer Activities: ^See above. I also have few hours spent volunteering at local food shelters and doing NHS activities.
Essays: I think they were solid. I wrote my common app essay about how my time spent volunteering changed my world view, and I wrote my NW essay about it’s unique combo of academic opportunities and campus location next to but not inside a major city
Teacher Recommendation: Absolutely stellar. From my junior year history teacher and english teachers, both also my debate coaches. I have great relationships with both of them. I was able to read the letter from my english teacher, it was ridiculously good. I believe at one point he said he was the best student he’d ever taught and that I was doing a better job mentoring novice debaters than he was.
Counselor Rec: Not sure, I didn’t know her too well. I assume it wasn’t bad.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Didn’t interview

[ul]
State: Massachusetts
Country: USA (I would hope)
School Type: Average sized, pretty reputable public high school known for its french program. Nothing too special though, no admissions tests required to get in. We usually have a few students each year get into the top dozen universities nationwide but not nearly as many as competitive private schools.
Ethnicity: As white as a sheet of paper, but I didn’t list my ethnicity on my application.
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 150k-200k combined familial income a year (so not getting financial aid but also not rich enough for my parents to front all the costs… yay)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nope [/ul]
Reflection

[ul]
Strengths: Extremely rigorous course load. Otherwise, my essays and recommendations were definitely strong. The other parts of my application are consistent with the average admitted student.
Weaknesses: I definitely don’t have any hooks and lack a particular E/C strength. My UW GPA might be a bit underwhelming?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m extremely happy that I got in considering I was lacking particular hooks and my SATs weren’t ridiculously good. Strong academic focus probably carried my application. The class rank combined with rigorous courseload at a HS that’s not a blow-over, as well as my ECs focused on academics (academic competitions/debate) might have impressed the ad coms. Super happy that I got in!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t apply anywhere else![/ul]General Comments: I’m super excited to meet all of you! I can’t wait to see what awesome people NU admitted, I’m a bit ashamed that I don’t have any super talents or anything. Congrats to everyone else who got in!!!

Prospective students: Once you get into one of your reaches or matches, the college application process will seem much less important. Once you submit your apps don’t stress out too much over them! Start to get excited for college!

P.S. I created this account to make this post! Absolutely ecstatic

Edit Any reason the tags won’t work?

when you’re filling in the template, just erase the space in things like [ ] so its like || (but with brackets). Don’t erase anything with brackets around them (except at the top, pick one of the 3 responses and erase the other two)!! Also, if you can find them, you can also add an extra line of space after anything that ends with |/list| to separate the different headings. :)

Reflection: ED really kept me in the running. Everyone at NU is smart. You need to go above and beyond–pull out all the stops.
Strengths: GPA, test scores, EC
Weaknesses: ethnicity, demographics, common app essay
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: scores, leader in all EC, interesting family dynamic (twin sister, brothers in their 50s), visited campus twice
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Duquesne
General Comments: NU really focuses on school pride, and ED is a great way to convey your enthusiasm for the school! Take SAT II tests. My cousin did not take them and was rejected from NU though extremely qualified. Best of luck!

• Teacher Recommendation: one was very good, presumably (written by my Precalc/Calc/AP Stats teacher), and one was absolutely stellar (written by my AP Latin teacher, who said “my rec was so good, I don’t know how they could not let you in”)
• Counselor Rec: presumably good, I have a close relationship with my counselor
• Additional Rec: written by my mentor at Planned Parenthood. It was “spectacular”, according to her.
• Essays: both Personal Statement and Supplement were very strong. I worked with a writing expert and my college counselor to fine-tune and perfect them.
• Interview: with an old friend of my dad’s, an NU alumni and staff member. Went very well.

Other
• State (if domestic applicant): Washington State
• Country (if international applicant):
• School Type: Private, rigorous college-prep
• Ethnicity: White

Reflection
• Strengths: strongly pursued interests, extracurricular leadership, great recommendations, ACT/SAT II scores, essays
• Weaknesses: GPA (I had a dip in grades at the end of Sophomore/beginning of Junior year due to an eating disorder)
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I applied to NU, a very pre-professional school, as a gender studies major. I think this, paired with my strong EC’s in the field of gender equality/sex ed/reproductive rights, set me apart. In addition, I also have fairly good grades and strong test scores.
