Reflection

Strengths: Economics, test scores
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: 1. Didn’t show any DI whatsoever. Honestly, that’s probably what killed me. Beyond that, my “why Northwestern” essay wasn’t all that great. Frankly, I think the fact that I wasn’t feeling that positive about Northwestern showed. Congrats to those who got in, though!
Other places applied to/Decisions: Waitlisted at both Wash U and UChicago, Accepted at Trinity with a full ride, waiting to hear from 17 more schools.

Made an account so people have an idea of who got in.

SAT: 2240 (M - 750, R - 730, W - 760)
SAT II: US History - 750, Literature - 690 (not sure if submitted, taken before I took course)

•Strengths: Essays and GPA
•Weaknesses: Definitely test scores; probably community service too, but I think with the quality of this years applicant pool it was all about GPA and test scores, so my test scores were definitely the downfall
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Test scores haha
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This was my first rejection actually. I have been accepted to 7 other schools including Cal Poly SLO where I plan on attending, but I’m waiting to hear back from BU and Cal.
General Comments: This decision was completely expected, so I wasn’t really phased by it at all. It would have been cool to have the opportunity to go to NU, but I visited in February and coming from Southern California I think it would have been too cold for me anyway! Northwestern is clearly a great school, and it’ll be even better with the quality of this year’s applicant pool. Since I already had my heart set on Cal Poly, I know I’ll be at a place where I’m happy next year. Good luck to all of you with your collegiate endeavors!

  • State (if domestic applicant): FL

  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: F
  • Income Bracket: do not need FA
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none.

Reflection

  • Strengths: 36 on ACT, very passionate about my ECs, essay was great - my CA essay was about an activity that probably made me stand out. Not a sport or anything that could sway my decision or bring attention to the university, but it was funny and probably made me memorable because I doubt many teenagers do it. I also named Northwestern my college choice for National Merit, and they particularly like to compete to be one of the schools with the most (the NMSC is based in Evanston, for pete’s sake).
  • Weaknesses:
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My Why Northwestern? essay wasn’t great. Not that it was terrible, just that in this day and age it needs to be more than a standard “this is why I like your school” essay to stand out and mine didn’t. I just couldn’t find a way to put on paper everything I love about the school.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to UVA and UNC OOS, WashU, an elite UK school conditionally, and a few safeties. Applied to 17 colleges so I won’t name them all, but still waiting on Stanford, Yale, Penn, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt.

General Comments: Further proof that essays are what make an application, in my opinion. I didn’t expect to get in because of my essay and I have some great other options so I’m not upset. Congrats to everyone who was admitted!

Decision: Accepted

SAT I (breakdown): 2280 (CR: 800, M: 680, W: 800, E: 11)

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): JFK Courage Essay contest winner, Harvard debate tournament finalist, states for tennis, national spanish exam - gold all four years (gold predicted this year), other smaller stuff…
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): mostly ESL tutoring, tennis
[ *] Job/Work Experience: nada
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: ESL tutoring mostly
[ *] Summer Activities: traveling, college classes (for future applicants, I suggest taking actual college classes from a more prestigious college rather than a community college - it just looks better I think)

[ *] Teacher Recommendation: didn’t see, assuming above average
[ *] Counselor Rec: didn’t see, assuming above average

[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): being a nice, honest person (I actually do think that admissions can tell if you’re being legit…)
[ *] Strengths: writing abilities (essays are IMPORTANT - I cannot stress this enough…I know genius kids that took the essays as a joke and didn’t get admitted to where they should have been admitted…in my opinion)
[ *] Weaknesses: math sux
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: COMMON APP ESSAY
[ ] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/list] Accepted: UPitt, William and Mary, Wash. U in St. Louis, UCLA (likely), Notre Dame, UMich Anne Arbor, waiting for ivy day/other colleges. Waitlisted: UChicago (probably due to math score on SAT) Rejected: Columbia ED (idk why I was outright rejected…whatevs)
[ b]General Comments:
if I had to give advice to any future applicants, it would be to NOT SLACK OFF DURING SENIOR YEAR (at least first semester). people think that, if they had a 4.0 going into senior year, a drop in GPA due to senioritis during the 1st semester will not be looked upon too poorly. THIS IS A LIE CONTINUE WORKING HARD PLEASE I WANT YOU ALL TO BE SUCCESSFUL BUT YOU GOTTA WORK FOR IT MAN. this being said, whence you becomest a 2nd semester senior, enjoyeth the rest of senior year
