is anyone else applying to radio/tv/film? I’m so excited to hear back, I’m feeling really good vibes. best of luck to everyone else applying!
hey guys! current NU freshman here, I got into Medill with a 2020 SAT score, 720 on US History and 700 Lit SAT subject test, subpar GPA, 29th in my class of 475 kids and absolutely NO journalism experience. It’s not all about your your grades or whatever, the admissions people genuinely care about your personality and the impact you’ve had on your community throughout high school. Don’t worry about your statistics, as long as you have great recommendations and stellar extracurricular involvement you should stand a fair chance. In case you were wondering, I got rejected at Vassar, waitlisted at Columbia and Wellesley, and accepted at Northwestern and UCONN. Good luck!
@notajackalope Hey - I ED’ed to Medill with 3.57 UW GPA, 33 ACT, 780 Math II. I think my essays went well, particularly why NU because I went to the Medill summer program for 5 weeks so I had a lot to write about. I’m a male from NY, if that matters. i’ve done a lot of journalism / writing EC’s in school / during summer but i’m worried I wasn’t involved enough to get in at NU… thoughts?
So far i only have one SAT subject. 2 is mandatory, or SAT subjects are only recommended as stated?
SAT Subject are just supplementary/recommended. I was told that they will probably not make/break application.
Applying RD here. Any other eng majors here?
I’m applying as CS but WCAS (because of CogSci interest too).
@netflicks thank you for your response. You said “they will probably not make/break application”. So SAT Subject still might break application, right?
For the ECs and awards, did anyone submit extra materials such as videos, photos to college? I don’t see anywhere in the common app we can upload.
Northwestern doesn’t accept supplement materials, including videos or artwork. If it is a central part of who you are or what you have done you could incorporate it into one of your essays, but no, there’s no where to upload anything.
@YMBA6688 SAT Subject tests are a small part of your total application. Anything can “break” your application, but it’s not really likely that it would be the only reason you’re accepted/rejected.
Do NOT send videos, photos, or anything extra to NU. The admissions office doesn’t like to be bothered too much. see http://admissions.northwestern.edu/faqs/application-requirements/index.html
Thank you guys.
Also, how many of you will apply for financial aid from NU? Will the acceptance chance be lower if we do?
Northwestern is need-blind for domestic applicants*, so no, it will not lower your admissions chances.
*U.S. Citizens and permanent residents
Is it looked down upon to submit math level 1 scores instead of math level 2 scores?
@sjb1215 I also applied R/Tv/F! Both excited and terrified because most of my extracurriculars were theater tech related instead of film.
@McKilla99 From what I heard, alot of adcoms favor Math2 over Math1, especially if you’re going into engineering. If you’re doing humanities or something and want to round yourself out with a Math, Math1 is fine I think. But if you’re engineering, I would do Math2
@Zeppelin7 Thanks! I have a 760 on the Math2 as of now and I’ve submitted it already, but I can’t take anymore tests for Northwestern since I’ve already applied ED
Anyone know what time of day we will receive the email on the 15th? I really hope it’s not during the school day lol I don’t think I could handle the emotions
Does anyone know how important the alumni interviews are to the admission process? Is it too late to request an interview for an ED application? Thanks
@londondad According to the common data set, interviews are “considered” in the admissions process, so I don’t think it’ll do much in terms of boosting chances of getting accepted. As for requesting for an interview, I don’t know sorry
