Official Northwestern Class of 2024 Discussion

I wouldn’t be too stressed out. I’ve heard from two other applicants that I know that their interviews only lasted around 30 minutes. Another friend and I both had interviews that lasted over an hour. I think it just depends on the person interviewing you. The fact that you had enough questions to fill a good amount of time is a good sign!

Northwestern was one of my better interviews, so fingers crossed!

yup, mine too!

if it eases anyone’s anxieties, i thought my Georgetown interview went horribly (worst of all by far) and they consider the interview a lot, but i still managed to get in
also–did not get an interview for northwestern

Interviews were really scarce in my area. I know about 6 people from my school who applied to NW and only one got an interview. The rest got an email from NW admissions that there wasn’t any more slots available… hope i can stand out from my peers ?

Yup. Who do you think subsidizes all those low interest loans and provides all those state and federal grants to pay the exorbitant cost of tuition? There is only one college/university in the US that doesn’t accept money from Uncle Sam, and they don’t have to dance to his tunes. All others, state and private, are beholden to government to some degree if they want these taxpayer funds to continue flowing to their benefit.

However, that does nothing to change the fact that if you are applying RD to Northwestern, you are much more likely to be accepted if you are from the Chicago area than if you are not. Outside of the Chicago area, your best chance is applying via ED. It’s all about the yield, and that’s a fact.

@Anisqoyo It’s NU not NW!!! That’s probably the most important thing to know if you are trying to get in there.

@Anisqoyo I applied ED but got deferred. I reiterated in my letter of continued interest that Northwestern is my first choice, but should I nonetheless be worried about them in regards to yield?

Thanks. No one in my family is trying to get in there. My Florida boys are looking to stay as far south as possible. We have a relative that worked in admissions for “NU” several years ago who warned us to only apply ED (being from out of state) unless we were hooked. No hooks.

My interview asked that exact same question, but he showed me a paper he received from Northwestern that contained all of the interview questions that they wanted to be answered. He also asked some questions of his own; however, the vast majority came right off of the paper that he was given.

@PPofEngrDr @Anisqoyo I was admitted through ED and around one-third of people are from the Chicago area – I’d imagine it would be around the same for RD.

I also remember my counselor telling me that selective colleges like these tend to be territorial to protect their yield rate. For example, if there are two applicants that are identical except one lives much closer than the other, the school will likely admit the one who lives closer since there’s a greater probability that that student will enroll there.

@Anisqoyo Genuinely curious, do you have statistics to back your claim up? Or is it based on personal experience?

Could someone chance me? I’m super anxious.

ok i know that northwestern cares a lot about yield and because of that chooses local students for RD but I live in NJ and went out of my way to visit Chicago to see the school would that help? like it’s really clear in my why Northwestern essay that I know a lot about the school and would probably attend if accepted

@katie6745 I think it’ll definitely help! Best of luck!

@ipa1002 right off the bat remember that it’s impossible to chance for a competitive institution, and that I can only compare your stats and extra curr. to what I’ve seen.

I think you have a low chance of acceptance, primarily because your stats are super low. NU’s 25th percentile is a 1420 SAT. So, unless you have a hook or have some reason that test day went bad (illness, random event, or disability, maybe?), then your GPA, SAT, and APs make it seem like you’ll struggle at NU.

On the other hand, your extracurriculars are quite good. Especially if your club(s) are large, productive, and if your research was published or if you have intentions of continuing it. You have a nice minority hook, too.

Remember, this is all just opinion and I really wish you the best of luck!!

4:00 PM Central Time was obviously not correct. Why can’t these schools announce the time?

How is it obviously not correct? It’s only 2 PM Central right now…

Yield is different discussion then how it is being funded.
Cost/Subsidy aspects, Are you suggesting NU and other privates are funded like NFL stadiums?

@OverseasFather It’s not correct?
