Reflection:
Strengths: Well rounded, but with good depth in each area. Great teacher recs; a school known for rigor.
Weaknesses: test scores?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think she had a lot of extracurriculars that were all connected in some way—there was breadth, but also depth. Literacy is really important to her, and I think that reflected in every part of her application: schoolwork, essays, teacher recs, extracurriculars. She also had really good relationships with my teachers and the admissions officer for my area.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to my safety schools: Tulane Honors program with scholarship, and Fordham.
General Comments: Essays are the most important thing. But above all, the application has to come together and connect.

Decision: Accepted to the Bienen School of Music and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (Music performance 5 year double major program) Piano Performance/Undecided

Other
State (if domestic applicant): Oklahoma (I heard that not many people applied from here…)
School Type: Public high school and middle school, 1,200 students total
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: > 50,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A?

Reflection
Strengths: My essays and extracurriculars were my strong suit. I didn’t overwork my essays and really just tried to illustrate a picture of myself to the admissions committee. There’s always the advice that you shouldn’t write about [insert event that can happen to many people], for me in this case my mother’s cancer, because so many people write great essays about it. However, I think if you write it in the most honest way possible, it can really strengthen your application.
Also, when writing about why you chose Northwestern, I focused on myself rather than the school. I actually had to audition on Piano live, and three of my four pieces were solid, but my Bach was TERRIBLE. I had only prepared it two weeks in advance and I was not ready to play it at all. I think the piano faculty realized this though.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere else (only applied to Northwestern)

General Comments: Academics are not everything. This is my biggest piece of advice. I know it is incredibly good to have that 4.0. However, if you have other qualities that are great, such as sports or music really highlight those, and it can really make your application stand out. Also, standardized test scores really shouldn’t impede on your decision to apply!

[] Strengths: Decent ACT score, volunteer work, essays
[] Weaknesses: Not so great on SAT II or AP scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, my “Why Northwestern” essay was pretty good, it was very personal.
[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to MSU, applied to U of M but now withdrawing app. [/ul]General Comments: I’m in shock! So excited.

@CollegeChica12 I completely know how you were feeling. I’m also really interested in journalism, and while I was thankfully accepted, it’s not the end of the road for you, I promise! It’s difficult to find schools that are really strong in journalism and also have that extra spark that capture your attention.

I also applied to the University of Missouri, which although not many have heard of it, has an incredible journalism program and an absolutely gorgeous (and HUGE) campus in Columbia, MO. The buildings and especially the journalism section (7+ beautiful buildings) were really great, and I was seriously considering going there if I was not accepted to Medill.

I applied to UNC Chapel Hill, which is probably harder to get into as an out-of-stater than Northwestern. But you might want to try there as well because of their really strong communications/journalism program.

Other schools that might interest you are the University of Florida, which although it is a HUGE state school, has recently become rather selective and has a really great communications/journalism department. University of Miami might also be a good fit, and even though I’ve never been there, it was an option for me. Boston University also has a strong comm/journalism department. I also was thinking about Duke, Wesleyan University (in Connecticut), and William & Mary, but those schools don’t have a journalism major.

Even if you don’t end up going to a university that features a really strong Jschool you can still be involved wherever you end up. Almost every university has some sort of publication, many have multiple. And to be a journalist doesn’t necessarily mean that you HAVE to go to a Jschool. Maybe majoring in something that really interests you that you could potentially write about as a journalist or a certain part of the media industry could be really fun and make for a good career.

All I can say is don’t give up on it, although you’ve probably heard that a million times before. I was really nervous about majoring in journalism because of all the people who say it’s dying industry, but it’s really not! It’s just changing for the better. So many different types of media have popped up in the last decade that it would be impossible for “journalism” to die out.

With the stats you posted, I’m sure that you’ll have a fabulous time wherever you end up.

Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: definitely my writing (supplements and especially common app), i also submitted film supplement, in the ‘additional comments’ section of common app, without applying to communications school. i have a lot of passion for film and i think it really came through. i also had an upward trend in grades.
[] Weaknesses: very little extracurriculars, only took two aps each year and they were the easier aps.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: definitely my essay and my writing in general, also my passion for film that came through the application as well as the film supplement i sent them.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: only applied to UCs and got into my safety.[/ul]

General Comments: I was under the impression that decisions are not till next week, so i was completely surprised to even find the email, let alone the fact that i got in. I actually got up to check my email for my safety school’s decision, but found NU instead.
