Official Northwestern University Class of 2012 Decisions

Decision: Accepted (Medill)
[ul]
[] SAT I: 2090 (V: 730, M: 650, W: 710)
[] SAT IIs: Literature (720), Biology (660), Math IIC (600)
[] ACT: 30 (34 in Writing & Reading, though.)
[] GPA: 4.96
[] Rank: ~16 or 17 in class of 293
[] Other stats: I will graduate with 12 APs and a lot of 4s and 5s to boot ;-)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Incredible and really heartfelt. 13 to 15 drafts of a personal statement for CA.
[] Teacher Recs: 3 letters of recommendation from some of the best teachers at my high school.
[] Counselor Rec: Amazing. I visited him once or twice a week for over two years. We talk all the time.
[] Hook (if any): Low-income status isn't really a hook, but perhaps QB helped? I'm Asian-American, so no AA for me.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Illinois
[] School Type: Selective Chicago Public High School
[] Ethnicity: Asian-American
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Weak standardized test scores, but in every test I took, I had significantly higher scores in reading/comprehension/writing, which probably when applying for admission in the Medill School of Journalism.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Lots of journalism experience; worked two jobs for the past two summers, worked for a national radio organization, peer reviewed for a youth radio group, member of alternative energy group at school. Basically, my resume was freaking amazing (trying not to be arrogant here, but failing miserably.) I really did crazy-awesome things, despite coming from one of the lowest socioeconomic brackets.
[/ul]Other Factors: QuestBridge Match Finalist, published in several literary magazines and websites, lots of radio and print journalism experience. I had a lot of amazing "soft" factors (and no, not all of them are listed in previous CC posts.)
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Honestly? Scores aren't everything. Stop obsessing, everyone. I'm glad I finally proved that scores are absolutely not the end-all be-all. I took the ACT three times and the SAT twice. I did my best, and I'm glad Northwestern saw that.

*Decision: Accepted! To WCAS *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2260 (700M/760V/800W)
[] SAT IIs: 750 Math 2C, 700 Lit, 800 US Hist)
[] ACT: N/A
[] GPA: 4.0/4.6
[] Rank: Top 5%
[] Other stats:
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Worked pretty hard on them.
[] Teacher Recs: Didn't see them, but I imagine one was spectacular, other was good but not unique.
[] Counselor Rec: Again, didn't see it, but I think it was great.
[] Hook (if any):
[/ul]
Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: VA
[] School Type: Competitive Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: ECs: Lots and lots of them, but all really well explored/developed, so I was well-rounded and showed "passion." SGA, Music, Debate, NHS, Spanish Honors Society, 2 Varsity Sports, Theater, all during all four years.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Because the admissions office decided so?
[/ul]
Other Factors:** Took hardest course load available, even sacrificed lunch for credits. Did various academic programs over the summer.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Go Wildcats!

Accepted:
SAT 2360, 2/482, 16 AP's, Nat. Merit Finalist/$2500 award, Presidential Scholar
Also in at: MIT, UChicago, Chapel Hill, Duke, UFlorida; waiting to hear from the Ivies.

*Decision: Rejected (Medill) *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: N/A
[] SAT IIs:710 Literature, 700 US History
[] ACT: 33
[] GPA: 3.98uw, 4.3w
[] Rank: Top 5%
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I loved them, personally. I put a lot of time into it.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent.
[] Hook (if any):
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Very ambitious/creative/responsible
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: It was stupid of me to have applied to Medill. While I want to study journalism, they usually only take those with a lot of experience. I guess passion isn't enough, unless you also happen to be an EIC.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: NU was my first choice. I'm even more worried now about my chances at Cal and Brown. I'm not really expecting acceptances anymore to anywhere. This year is quite possibly the worst year to be applying to colleges (baby boomer kids). Rejection is just a horrible feeling, especially when you wanted it so badly.

Congrats to all those who were accepted. Know that I envy you. :P

*Decision: ACCEPTED! WCAS! *

it just really sucks when you work hard in school, get a 2340 on the SATs, a 99 gpa, have all the extra curriculars, all the awards, but youre still just not good enough, not special enough.
these are supposed to be academic institutions. sorry to be a debbie downer hahah

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: YAY! I'm so excited that I got in despite being Southern Ohio and taking only 2 AP classes

oh my god. the stupid page won't load. must be hundreds of people checking status now. ugh.

whyy wont the freakingg page just load already????? i'm dyingggg here!!

right??? granted, i have no idea if i'll even get in but STILL c'mon people

LOL Tonight I found out that I am accepted to Duke, Rice, and... waitlisted at Northwestern. Do they waitlist for overqualification? (Not that I'm certain this is why, but I'm curious to know.)

WAITLISTED

STATS:
2nd-gen Asian-American female
Small, upper-middle class, public, suburban, predominantly white school in the northeast. Sends a few grads to top places every year.

W GPA = 4.6 (9-12), UW = 3.92

APs: World, US, Bio.

Major ECs:

Major awards: Bausch & Lomb honorary science award, College of the Holy Cross book award, awards in history and latin, Scholar Athlete, High Honor Roll Scholar Athlete, etc.

Teacher recs: should be good. My history teacher gave me the department award last year and my chemistry teacher is infatuated with me.

(Common App) Essay: pretty good; definitely an attention-grabber; honestly can't remember what the other Northwestern essays were

FinAid: Applied

I'm pretty sure they don't waitlist you if you're overqualified...generally they accept you with open arms.

I was pretty damn surprised. My stats don't really touch some CCers. I'm not going to be all false modes, I'm a great student, but man some people on these forums impress me.

*Decision: ACCEPTED AT MEDILL *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 740 CR 690 M 670 W (I was worried they would be bothered by this since I was applying for journalism)
[] SAT IIs:780 US History, 690 Lit
[] ACT: 33 (35 E, 34 Reading, 32 Math, 31 Science; 11 writing)
[] GPA: 3.95/4.0, 96.405
[] Rank: 10/690 (interesting story, the report card said I was 11, but it was a typo. Sucked for the fake 10 because she had her picture taken for the yearbook and everything)
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays:I'm not sure, it was a sob story about my alcoholic father and how it was my goal in life to not be him. My language arts teacher loved it, sister hated it
[] Teacher Recs: I thought they were pretty good myself
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor is a brain dead moron who checks outstanding in everything if you have a high GPA
[] Hook (if any): Doubt it. My supplemental essay about what specific features attracted me made me sound like a brochure for northwestern. Maybe they want me to write brochures for them
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country:GA
[] School Type:Public
[] Ethnicity:Indian
[] Gender:M
[li] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I always thought my weaknesses were my ECs, I didn't really do any until junior year. Here's my track list: Associate Editor of school paper, Team Captain of our mock trial, Member/Team Captain of Certamen Team (team captain just means i answered the question on bonus rounds), and member of young democrats--but we didn't do anything. I did some community service but not much (like 80 hours I think?). I worked at CVS, and interned in a law firm, which helps.
[/li]

[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:[/li]I honestly have no idea. I'm thinking Northwestern standards weren't as super high as I thought. I have great grades, I guess I underestimate my ability. I guess my essay was good, if anyone wants to see it to offer their perspective, PM me.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Wow...I was surprised. Not sure what to do from here, guess I'll see the financial aid package. It would be pretty awesome to go there.

cant get on!!! too much bandwidth in use!!

Ha i got wait listed. I guarantee i have worse stats than anyone here, so i'm okay with it
