Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Alabama Honors, applied to Florida State, Florida, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and UPenn

Reflection: I was absolutely heartbroken. Probably cried for 2 hours at least. ND was really my dream school, and now I have to deal with telling everyone that I wasn’t even good enough to get a deferral. I know that with my test scores made acceptance a long shot, but I at least thought I could get deferred. I terrified for applying to Duke and UPenn now… But, nonetheless, congrats to all those who got it!!!

Applied to College of Science-Physics Major

Not legacy
Not Catholic
Not part of a minority
Not first generation

Strengths: Multiple summer research experiences/programs, teacher recommendations, and essays
Weakness: Test scores (and no “hooks” to compensate for any statistics-based weaknesses)

Reflection: Congratulations to everyone who got in! For everyone else that got rejected or deferred, I, too, feel your pain. Although Notre Dame was not necessarily a top choice for me, rejection is nevertheless an unpleasant feeling and (unfortunately) a necessary evil for most students out there applying to many top universities. Good luck to all of those deferred and/or applying to other schools!

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores/GPA/Recommendations/Comm. service
Weaknesses: Most writing
Why you think you were accepted: Legacy+SAT+GPA

General Comments: Very excited to have a chance with ND. First acceptance was a good one.

First of all congratulations; this is a very exciting, yet painstaking experience. It’s difficult to feel self-worth when a prestigious university rejects your application. It doesn’t feel like that though- it feels like they are rejecting you as a person. Today, I was rejected from the University of Notre Dame. I have a 4.15 weighted GPA, have all As or A-s on my report cards, and am a full diploma candidate for the International Baccalaureate program. I take four higher level classes, which is more than the required three. I became president of the National Honor Society and captain of the Forensics team. I participated in 150 creativity, action, and service hours and wrote a 4,000 word essay over the summer regarding the misconceptions of the Underground Railroad. I play sports and have a 15 hour-a-week job. I feel like I work my (excuse my language) ass off. I wrote my three best essays for Notre Dame supplemental essay prompts. I feel cheated and self-depreciating because I was rejected. I believe I was rejected because I got a 31 on my ACT. I studied diligently for the Math portion, but I couldn’t score higher than a 27. I excel in English and Reading, where I scored a 34 and a 35. There’s a part of me that envisions a bored, tired admissions counselor who looked at my ACT score and tossed my application aside without bothering to look at my essays and extracurriculars. Getting rejected from college is like not fitting into a pair of jeans at that one store from middle school that the other kids idolized. If you couldn’t fit into those jeans, you weren’t good enough. I used to give optimistic advice that God has another plan, but the feeling of getting rejected sucks. So as I’m sitting here in the back of my car with fat, salty tears running down my face, I can’t suppress the green-eyed monster that despises those who are accepted.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): I spent a lot of time on them and had them edited many times. But at best id give my ND specifics a 7, although I love my Common App Essay and would quickly give it a 9 or 10. I did a lot on that one
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I had 2 notre dame alumni give me teacher recommendations, and they taught me 2 classes each and one was also a special advisor. so probably a 9 or so

Reflection

Strengths:

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Mostly because they must have liked the extracurriculars and the support
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No other decisions so far

General Comments: The Gateway Program is really interesting and apparently 19 other students and I were given the opportunity to attend ND this way

I am a QB finalist and was deferred as well. They said they had made my decision…

@uniofblank‌ I feel you so much. I am also an extremely high achieving student who got rejected from Notre Dame. I am a legacy applicant, I have a 2290 SAT score and I am captain of my Varsity field hockey team. I am fluent in four languages, and I taught English and science to underprivileged kids in India this summer. My GPA was probably what got me rejected - it was a 4.15 (?) weighted, 3.62 unweighted, and even that was due to special circumstances (family deaths) that I clearly noted in my application. I wrote three amazing essays and had a stellar recommendation from our principal himself. Despite all this, Notre Dame decided to reject you and me, for what reasons I cannot discern. Surprisingly, I didn’t cry as much as I thought I would, and I felt infinitely better after tearing my letter into a million pieces. I suggest you do the same, if you haven’t already, and I want you to know that there are lots of seniors in the same position as you. As my literature teacher put it, colleges never admit students who don’t deserve to get in, but they unfortunately must reject many students who do deserve to. Stay strong, and move on; it isn’t us who didn’t deserve Notre Dame - it’s Notre Dame that didn’t deserve us. :)

Reflection

Strengths: Transcript was near perfect, depth and commitment to a select few extracurriculars, solid rec letters, and being a legacy

I love Notre Dame and I am excited to attend next year. I sympathizes with those deferred or rejected because I am sure you were all amazing students and people. Good luck to everyone!

I am in So California and still have not heard. Other students at my school have heard. Should I call admissions? Would they even tell me over the phone? Do you know if anything is coming out in email later? I hate to wait until everyone at ND has gone home for break if it is maybe lost in the mail. Has anyone else not heard a decision yet?

@dancing1‌ I am in so cal and haven’t heard back either

Hi everyone, Notre Dame has been my dream school my entire life. I am a legacy and live in California, where i attend a very prestigious Cathlic high school. I was deferred from early action, and I was wondering what you guys think my chances are? Here are my stats

What are my chances for admission? And what could I do to improve my application.

Can anyone tell me if I can apply to another school for ED II? (I was rejected from ND REA)…
Please let me know :)

@adtphd‌ Thank you so much for your reply. It’s on this forum that I found the most comfort for my rejection. Congratulations on your achievements because I think they make for a stellar application. I think that they should have accepted you. Any college would be lucky to have you. It peaked my interest when you said that you traveled to India. I’m not sure where else you are applying to, but I strongly suggest Duke. Duke has a program called Duke Engage that is funded by Melinda Gates. Students have the opportunity to travel globally for service projects and it is free of charge for Duke students. I haven’t had the opportunity to travel somewhere to do that, and I would really like to. If you apply by December 20th, you are highly considered for an alumni interview. I’m jumping on that opportunity because I am passionate about public speaking and I think I do well in interviews. I think that would help my application because my ACT score isn’t high enough. I feel that with your contributions and superior academic achievements, you would get in. My prayers go out to you. The morning on the day that I was rejected (I didn’t find out until the afternoon) a girl who is number 1 in our class and the smartest person at my school was deferred from MIT, which is her dream school. I told her that it wasn’t meant to be and that maybe it was the universe’s way of protecting her, like from a freak lab accident there that would paralyze her. I didn’t know how she must have felt until that afternoon. I felt crushed and I wasn’t expecting to feel so crummy. My parents and schoolmates made me feel worse, and it is from this website’s members that I feel truly understand me, which is ironic because you don’t even know me. So, thank you so much for your kind words because I feel infinitely better. You changed my day and I am so grateful. Good luck to you, because Notre Dame missed out on not only a great student, but a great person.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
ACT: 35 Composite: 36 Science/ 35 Math/ 36 Reading/ 35 English/ 8 Writing
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0/ 4.12 Weighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2/153
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Bio (4), AP US History (5)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus, College Credit Spanish 5, College Credit English, AP Gov
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Treasurer for a Christian service group in my community; Spanish club (officer); Student Government 4 years; Student Ambassadors 4 years; Soccer - state league team for 5 years, JV 2 years & Varsity 2 years; Cross Country - JV last 2 years
Job/Work Experience: Babysitter: full time during summer & weekends during school year; Cashier at a minor league baseball stadium over the summer
Volunteer/Community service: Frequent volunteer at a domestic abuse shelter (2 hrs/week, 3 weeks/month); Co-Chair of Giving Tree program at my Church; & a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff I didn’t put on my application; all together >240 hours in first 3 years of high school
Summer Activities: Just babysitting & working at stadium
Essays: I devoted a lot of time into them because I knew those would be the deciding factor of my application, so I would give my Common App a 9/10 and my three ND ones 10/10.
Teacher Recommendation: Very good relationship with my AP Bio teacher - so probably 10/10
Counselor Rec: He was new this year so I have no idea

Other
State (if domestic applicant): Wisconsin
School Type: Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Honestly, I’m a middle class, white girl from the Midwest, so I don’t really have any hooks other than being a legacy student.

Reflection:
Strengths: ACT, GPA, also Class Rank b/c my school has a good history with ND as a very competitive school so even being #2 is remarkable
Weaknesses: I didn’t have any strong leadership activities, my two actual positions are both ~2 hours per week at most & only a few weeks per year, but being co-chair of the Giving Tree is more of a time commitment
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I really showed my dedication to the school and proved to ND that I would be a good fit there. I know there’s a lot of really good students who have a lot better resume than I do, so I’m actually not really sure other than that.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SLU, St. Thomas, UW Madison(accepted)

General Comments:
This past summer I read all these past threads about admissions decisions at ND & really stressed myself out. I was convinced I would never have a chance to get in (even though ND is my dream school & I had the stats to get in) because I could never compete with people who go on international service trips or have started their own company or complete >1,000 hours of volunteer work & even some of them got denied. From an extracurricular standpoint, I think I’m actually fairly average, I mean I spend most of my free time taking care of my younger siblings or playing soccer, which I stopped this year. So, I just wanted to post this to show that you don’t have to be a superhuman high school student with millions of extracurriculars to get accepted, as long as you can show you have the motivation and attitude to be a good fit at ND. I’m still ecstatic that the admission team gave me this opportunity! I wish the best of luck to everyone still awaiting a decision!

@divein, yes, now that ND’s REA decisions have been made, you are free to apply to another school for ED II. Best of luck to you!

@Sophia13133 anything today? Are there still So Cal Students waiting to hear?
