Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

General Comments: 2nd Choice.

Ugh. Reading through several of the posts, it is obvious that what an earlier applicant stated is true. My son is a white, Catholic, and lives in the ND region, and was denied admission. Yet, a few students who earned early admission do not have the scholastic or leadership credentials he has–but they are minorities. I support universities seeking to diversify their student bodies and don’t begrudge anyone who has been accepted. I just wish there were enough spots in the class for everyone who qualifies academically and who live the “Notre Dame” spirit.

What drives a knife deeper into my (our) souls are the number of applicants who were accepted but say Notre Dame is “2nd Choice” or not their top choice. Isn’t the whole point of early admissions to lock up students who will go to Notre Dame if accepted? My son’s top choice is still Notre Dame–and its not for t-shirt wearing reasons. It is because he sincerely and deeply wants to live his Catholic faith now and in his future career. Yes, there are many good Catholic universities around the nation–but Notre Dame has special significance to our family. Besides growing up in the shadow of the campus, sharing the University’s care of the regional Pottawotomi people, my son is related to St. Andre Bessette, the Holy Cross order’s latest saint. His essay answers nailed these sentiments so well.

@michianadad That is very tough. Not even a deferral? My heart goes out to your son and your family. Is there a way to appeal the rejection?

@MichianaDad While I understand your frustration, as a student here I know that the locals are overrepresented in every freshman class. There are approximately 50 “townies” in my freshman class (St Joseph’s, Penn HS have at least 15 kids each, Marian has 8 and the others combine for the rest). We also have 110 African American students in the freshman class, with athletes overrepresented in this group. How does a region of half a million inhabitants get half the spots as a group compromising over 40 Million Americans? Notre Dame is seeking diversity and at the same time to improve its academic rankings (every freshman class has even higher test scores). Qualified locals will be rejected but so will qualified students across the country. Too many deserving people for too few spots.

To sdhotmama: I think you are a fraud. No one “secures a spot” in Mendoza as a freshman. If you knew anything about ND - you would know all freshman take an general course of study and THEN declare a major in their sophomore year. While there are some restrictions for transfer students - majoring in business (Mendoza School) is open to all who choose it. This forum is used for people to keep informed and de-stress on a very important moment in there young lives. Your mis-information only creates more stress!!!

@kevkelly New admissions policy restricts entrance to Mendoza in order to keep each class at around 550 students. Do some research instead of calling other people frauds while misinforming the readers of this thread.

@kevkelly a person can apply to Mendoza as an incoming freshmen and they are guaranteed a spot in Mendoza come sophomore year. Others can apply for Mendoza later, but there will be limited spots due to those who were accepted as incoming freshmen.

You really shouldn’t call someone a fraud if you’re uninformed…

@kevkelly. Here is the link so you may do your research. http://admissions.nd.edu/admission-and-application/prospective-first-year-students/new-business-major-policy/
No reason to lash out at people.

Weaknesses: Subject Test Scores and ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I go to a very competitive college prep school, and so I think my 4.0 along with a lot of honors and AP classes stood out, especially since I’m a first generation college student. Plus, I think my essays were very well-written.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Applied to four colleges. Accepted at University of Oregon and Notre Dame, still waiting to hear back from UVA and USC

General Comments:
I’m was very shocked and excited to be accepted to ND! Of all the schools I applied to, my counselor told my ND was my “wild card,” and so I’m hoping this is a good sign for the rest of the schools I applied to. ND is my first choice, but I’m not sure if my family can afford it since we don’t qualify for financial aid (my dad owns a small business and so his reported income is much higher than what he actually takes home).
