Teacher Rec:7/10 Nothing too special.
Counselor Rec: 6/10. Honestly my counselor was no help at all in my four years. He made no effort to get to know me so I can’t imagine this rec to be anything profound.

Reflection
I really thought I had a good shot, given my test scores, but I think it was my class rank that did me in more than anything. It’s crazy that so many of you guys are so qualified, yet still so few of you got in.

Strengths: test scores, good leadership in extracurrics, being from GA, really creative essays
Weaknesses: class rank (the admissions rep I talked to in Oct. really stressed class rank as a big metric they use and I attend a very competitive and big public HS), being a white boy

Accepted at UGA with Honors, U of Dayton with Honors
Rejected from Johns Hopkins

General Comments: I’m really happy for all of you guys that got in, and I’ve accepted that my fate will most likely be attending UGA (making it way easier to afford med school). Best wishes to everyone here.

Sorry, couldn’t bother to fill out the whole form–if you care, it’s the most recent post in my post history.

Anyways,

Decision: Rejected

GPA: 3.8ish unweighted (3 Bs all of high school but a chunk of A-s)
SAT: 2170 (760 CR, 680 M, 730 W)
SAT II: 700 USH, 650 Lit, 610 M1
ECs: Everyone says they’re impressive.
Essays: My Notre Dame ones felt quality and authentic, but I guess Notre Dame didn’t receive them that way in retrospect. I must note that I sent a better essay to the latter half of the colleges I applied to because halfway through the process I edited a chunk of my common app essay, and Notre Dame was one of the first I submitted to.
Hooks: First-gen college
Other Decisions: Accepted @ Michigan, Rejected @ Northwestern
Comments: Going into this, I was very optimistic I’d receive a large numbers of rejections but also some very amazing acceptances. After I was accepted into Michigan, I thought this would be easy. I think I was a bit over-eager. Sitting at 1/3 with seven decisions left, I’m excited for the decisions that lay ahead and really hope to get into Penn (my #1 school) but would be completely fine and excited to end up at Michigan.

Decision: Rejected

Objective

SAT I: 2260 ( 720 CR, 780 M, 760 W)
ACT: 36 (35 E, 35 M, 36 R, 36 S)

Senior Year Course Load: English, AP Macro, AP Calc AB, AP Physics
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commendation, Schoolwide English Dept. Award

Subjective

Extracurriculars: Club President + Founder, 5 years Odyssey of the Mind (2x State Champions),
Job/Work Experience:1 year retail job, 5 year other work, contracted technology work
Summer Activities: Service trip Costa Rica,
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8 or 9 / 10, won’t really go into much more detail
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec: 8 or 9 / 10
Counselor Rec: 7/10
Additional Rec (if used): Teacher, 7/10

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Physics/Astronomy
State (if domestic applicant): CA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $500,000
Hooks (legacy, URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores, strength of senior year schedule, essay
Weaknesses: GPA, ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Dip in grades junior year, not too many Extracurriculars
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Rejected: UCLA, Johns Hopkins
Waitlisted: UCSD
Accepted: St. Mary’s CA, Willamette, UMass Amherst, George Mason, Ohio State, Northeastern

General Comments: Kinda disappointed but not really unexpected given the type of student I am and the type of school ND is. Eh.

New to this gig and from the UK so understand that things are a little different over here. I’m not sure if this had any effect on my application but I would expect that I had less coaching for the SATs and essays than a lot of US applicants. However, they probably like a few internationals so it works both ways I think.

Decision: got in

SAT 1: 2250 (800CR, 700M, 750W). I only took them once
SAT 2: 730 French, 730 German
Don’t do GPAs and ranks
Ditto APs
A-levels in French, German and Latin (2A*s and one A if that means anything to anybody)
Won a prestigious German prize

ECs: + hcap golfer (represented county, 2x school captain), played no.2 on one of the strongest school squash sides in England. Established a successful French society at my school. Helped organise a charity dinner that raised £50,000. Several trips and exchanges to France and Germany
Gap year: Won a prestigious travel scholarship to study the effects of the French colonial era in French Indochina. Competitive golf as well
Summer: mainly golf tbh
Essays: Not sure. I guess they were fine. Got very little guidance - mainly got help in touching up my CA essay. No one else saw my ND essays. I write very well so they would have read nicely. My CA essay was on a particular golf match that I turned around; I wrote the ND ones on European borders and how they’re broken and how going to the US and ND in particular would make me more complete.
Recs: Didn’t see them but I know they would have been outstanding

No aid
Intended major: German but could well change
From UK
White male, not really that religious but Anglican if I had to choose one
I went to arguably the top school in the UK
Does it matter what my father earns?
No hooks

Reflection: Solid all round I think. Good scores and recs. Good sports and ECs. Maybe it helped that I didn’t do loads of things but I did the ones I did well and am clearly passionate about them. I did no work experience and next to no community work. I admire those who did but I didn’t really have time and am more into my academics and sports. I think I’m also a little different in that, academically, I’m quite into my european languages and cultures.

Also applied to Duke, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt in the US. No replies yet.

Happy I got in! Commiserations to those who didn’t - make the most of wherever you end up. Well done to those who did.

Decision: Accpeted with pre-admit to Mendoza

Job/ Work Experience: two summers at a law firm, about 8 months working at Wegmans Grocery Store
Essays: 9/10 -was very proud of these, especially my why Notre Dame essay, talked about how the Blessed Mother is present on campus and used two quotes from Fr. Hesburgh
Recommendations: show them that you want to go there very badly, mention specifics about time on campus and the feel of campus, don’t just write a basic essay about ND Football and tradition, they get a million of those

Recommendations: Teacher Rec: 10/10, Counselor Rec: 8/10, Service Trip Leader (other) Rec: 9/10

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid: Yes
Intended Major: Finance
State: NY
School type: Catholic Private (Jesuit)
Religion: Roman Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 200,000+
Hooks: Legacy, sister goes there

Reflection:
Strengths: Legacy, Essays, Gifted Math Program (would say this got me into Mendoza)
Weaknesses: Test Score

Accepted to: Villanova, Boston College, US Naval Academy, Fordham, University of Maryland,

Honestly, this has been my dream since I was a little kid with my dad and uncle going there and my sister attending now and loving it. I’m deciding between here and Navy but I got an NROTC scholarship yesterday as well so it won’t be a price concern. Biggest advice for applicants is show ND you want to go there. Summer going into junior year I met with my Admisisons counselor on campus and continued to email her throughout the process. Write good essays!!! They weigh this heavily. It’s hard to separate at the top of the pool, they want to see who really wants to go to there and contribute. Honestly for Mendoza, I think the math program I’m in carried me into that.

Decision: Accepted

Objective

SAT I: 2080 superscore

Volunteer/Community service: volunteered through NHS and CSF, at various community events, at my church
Summer Activities: not very impressive: took online course, attended church events/camp, read for fun, practiced for SAT
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I think my essays were the strongest part of my application, probably 9

Counselor Rec: idk

State : California
School Type: Public magnet school

Reflection

Strengths: GPA/rank, being a QuestBridge Finalist, essays. My essays were very honest and a good representation of who I am.
Weaknesses: my test scores aren’t exceptional, EC’s aren’t great, low income
Why you think you were accepted: This is a huge blessing and I’m so thankful to God. I spent a lot of time on my application and tried to be as honest as possible. Being a QuestBridge Finalist also helped.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to several safeties, UCLA, UCSB, and UC Davis. Waiting for 8 more decisions.

General Comments: I still can’t believe I got in. God is good! If you are a low income student, I highly recommend checking out QuestBridge programs (College Prep for juniors, College Match for seniors). If you are worried about the college application process or your decisions, know that you will end up where you’re meant to be. And try to not stress so much, best of luck!

Decision: Accepted

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): SUPERSCORE: 1920 (CR 620, M 660, WR 640)
ACT (breakdown): HIGHEST COMPOSITE: 30 . Best sub-scores were 32 Eng, 30 Math, 30 Read, 31 Sci, 24 Wr (eeeek).
SAT II: Spanish w Listening 680, Math II 620
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0, weighted 4.29.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 12 of 444
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Env Sci- 4, AP US History- 3, AP Spanish Lang/Culture- 5, AP EngComp- 5
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Gov, AP Macro-econ, AP Calc AB, AP Physics C, English IV, Digital Design/Animation, Link Crew, Advanced Band, Marching Band
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Recognition Program, AP Scholar w Honors

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): MUSIC: Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble (1st chair alto sax), Marching Band, Competition Drumline, Men’s Acapella Club. SPORTS: Varsity Water Polo, Varsity Swim. CLUBS: Sister City Club, CSF (secretary), Interact Club. OTHER: City Youth Commission, Link Crew (commissioner), volunteering.

Job/Work Experience: Bagger at local grocery store, valuable because I translated for other baggers who didn’t know Spanish.

Volunteer/Community service: 150ish hours: Volunteered for the school district energy department, Served and prepared food at Gilroy Garlic Festival (annual event that our town is known for, over 4,000 volunteers), did some math tutoring, gave saxophone lessons to middle schoolers.

Summer Activities: Travelled with a group of local HS students to our sister city in Japan to foster international relationships, stayed with host families. Also, my dad is a HS World History teacher and he leads educational tours to Europe, so I got to go a few times! Water polo practice during the summer every morning; Band camp in August; Lots of random community service.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): COMMON APP ESSAY: I would say 8/10. I talked about how I have perfect pitch and how it helped me excel in music at my school, and how I used it to help my friends with musical questions and such; ND EXCITES YOU ESSAY: I would say 9/10. I talked about how the architecture program will allow me to experience another culture during my junior year (Italy!!), and I described my excitement in joining the ND Marching Band!! (<<— Really though, I am s*****ng myself because I get to join that band); WHAT QUESTION FASCINATES YOU: I would say 10/10. I wonder if earthquakes will ever be predicted accurately. I talked about how in California, we always talk about earthquake preparedness, but we never actually know what to expect. I chose this topic because I figured it would set me apart from “What is life?” or “When will we cure cancer?”; SOCIAL MEDIA FOOTPRINT: Probably 9/10. I talked about this one picture on Instagram (@d.yaf … haha) from my exchange to Japan. The backstory is that we had done service projects in the village and had just had lunch with the mayor and city council, and I explained my digital footprint is more than just pictures, there’s a story and purpose behind every post.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec: 10/10. She’s probably the sharpest teacher I’ve had. She is the woman who basically taught me how to write a home-run essay.

Counselor Rec: 7/10. Basically just a summary of my résumé, but it was my fault because I had spelled her email wrong when inviting her to the Common App, and she had to write it the week the app was due (Bless her, I am still grateful for her doing this).

Additional Rec (if used): 10/10. Spanish teacher who loved me. She talked about how I was eager to learn ahead of the material and I was determined to figure out the imperfect subjunctive verb tense.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Ohhhhhhh yes.
Intended Major: Architecture
State (if domestic applicant): California: a smaller, majority Hispanic community
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public 9-12
Ethnicity: Mexican, Yaqui Native American, Georgian, Armenian, English
Religion: Catholic
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Like parents’ combined $ before taxes? About 150k. They’re teachers.
Hooks (legacy, URM, first generation college, etc.): Perfect pitch, world traveler

Reflection

Strengths: Definitely essays and extracurriculars, as well as attitude towards the school.

Weaknesses: Test scores. I was so scared because of my lower scores.

Why you think you were accepted: I believe I was accepted because of my involvement in my school/community and attitude towards service/faith/humanity. I told them what I was going to bring to their school through my essays. My GPA probably also helped me. Not a single B in high school.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to Cal Poly SLO (city and regional planning), and denied from UCLA (Civil Engineering). I’m waiting to hear back from UC Berkeley, USC, Stanford, Duke, Vandy.

General Comments: What I have learned from this entire stressful process is that colleges know we are more than just some stupid numbers. No, I don’t think I was accepted because of my ethnicity. No, it wasn’t because of my test scores. It was probably because of my essays and GPA. Don’t shoot yourself down because you don’t think your GPA or test scores are good enough!!

Reflection

Strengths: Gpa, A’s in 17 Ap classes, rank is nice too
Weaknesses: my act makes me want to cry and I am a terrible writer, my public school has never sent a student to ND
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t think I deserve a wait list because there are people with way better stats who were rejected. I did not accept a spot on the wait list because I got into my first choice, Georgia Tech!!!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Georgia tech, University of Texas at Austin w/ a scholarship, University of Washington, UF, UCF (full ride), University of Sciences Philadelphia (full ride), University of San Diego (full ride), Tulane w/ scholarship, University of Arizona (full ride)

General Comments: Notre Dame was more competitive than ever this year and so many brilliant people were turned down. But just because ND doesn’t want you doesn’t mean you’re not smart and you’re not worth anything. Everyone on this thread is unbelievably talented and I have no doubt you all will succeed in college and in life. Keep your faith and keep working hard. Whether you go to Notre Dame or not, you still have the opportunity to be a great person by serving your community and serving God. Good luck and God Bless!

@apples56583 I definitely don’t think you should have gotten waitlisted. It’s insanely competitive this year. Congrats on Tech, though! I’m from Georgia, and hearing about friends of mine that have been waitlisted/rejected from Tech has really surprised me - getting into Tech now is a pretty big deal.

Architecture!!! I was so afraid that I won’t get in because of my scores but I think my portfolio really helped.

Reflection

Strengths: strong grades and test scores, unique essays
Weaknesses: no truly impressive extracurriculars (apparently not bad enough to preclude my invitation to the Reilly Weekend, though!)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays weaved my modestly strong extracurricular narrative into one solid story. Tbh I think God smiled upon me that day.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Stanford (REA), WUSTL, Cornell Engineering, Brown, safeties
Waitlisted: Case Western (LOL to the extreme—supposed to be a safety), Penn, Harvard
Rejected: Princeton

General Comments: God will send each of us wherever we belong; I’m grateful that this happened to be part of the plan for me. To admits: congrats! To rejected and waitlisted students: don’t worry, as you will succeed where you attend based on your own efforts and resourcefulness more than even on a name like Notre Dame’s.

Go Irish!

@aBitOfLuck You have a lot of really great options - where do you think you will go?

@aBitOfLuck Case Western practices yield protection, meaning they don’t accept students out of their league because they will probably get into much better schools. Judging from your last line, I assume you’re going to ND?
