Reflection
My essays were well written and I think they demonstrated my character well. EC’s are probably my strongest aspect, but my grades are not the best for ND. My freshman year GPA was very low (several B’s) and I’ve spent the rest of my high school career trying to make up for it. Another kid from my school is ranked 5th and got in REA; I’m 19 and didn’t get in, so that could play a role as well. My low math score on the ACT and my low score on AP calc may have also raised some red flags. I think my application was too good to reject immediately, but not quite good enough to accept. I also developed a strong relationship with my admissions counselor, which may have saved me from rejection.

Strengths: EC’s, essays, possibly ACT score
Weaknesses: Academic record/class rank, counselor rec, and math ACT score/AP calc score
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See reflection
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Boston College, U of Rochester, Penn State, Pitt, and Fordham

General Comments: I will be remaining on the waitlist, but will probably put a deposit down at Pittsburgh in case.

Good luck to everyone next fall, wherever you may end up!

Reflection

Strengths: School/course rigor (we follow a schedule harder than many colleges), URM, I reaallllyy put some thought into my application (essays) for this school
Weaknesses: Math classes and standardized test grades
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: From what I gathered from my visit to ND, my school is very similar in terms of student life, and that really helped me to write my ND essays
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UPenn denied ED, Northeastern, Tulane, and Rensselear accepted, in-state public schools accepted

General Comments: I really needed this acceptance, ND became my number one pick, and the only school I truly had a passion about, after I was denied ED from my previous number one.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10
My essays for Notre Dame were some of the best essays I ever wrote (IMO). The prompts were easy to express who I am and my values.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 7/10
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10
Honestly, I don’t know how they were. I tend to be more quiet and reserved at school, but do well in their classes. Both teachers are nice guys, and I don’t think would say anything bad in a recommendation.

Counselor Rec: 10/10, she likes me a lot

CA: 9/10 it was unique and was actually about agnosticism (not that I am, but it was a little risqué to a Religion institution!)

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): my sister graduated last year but that doesn’t really do much for regular decision applicants

Reflection
I really like ND but I’m not sure yes the perfect fit. I kinda wanna pave my own path And since my sister went there I’m not sure. I was invited to a tour of some sort that I want to visit but I’m so happy to have gotten in!

Strengths: emphasis in community service and I took my time with my essays
Weaknesses: not unique or stand out ish enough… CA didn’t really emcompass who I am enough but everyone I showed liked it so idk
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my resume shows how interested in different things I am and i think that my passions for community service as well as a diverse set of activities and interests helped me get in
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected
Accepted: Fordham, case western, northeastern, Marquette
Waitlisted: Northwestern, wash U, Michigan, (deferred at UPenn ED)
Denied: no where (yet, I’m sure they coming)
Waiting to hear: Georgetown, NYU, vanderbilt, Michigan, some of the ivies

Accepted! Deferred with a 33 ACT. Retook it and got a 34 and sent that in as well as my 1490. Wrote a 6-page optional letter of interest and got a Rec from a professor there. 4.4 gpa, National merit commended scholar, some sports (equestrian), a TON of service including a 15-hour-per-week internship at my church. I did summer scholars too and I think that helped! Actively pursuing them after being deferred is HUGE-hope that helps! Go Irish!!!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1500 (720 Reading, 780 Math)
ACT (breakdown):
SAT II: 720 US history, 760 chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): I don’t really know my school doesn’t calculate it but it should be around 3.85. Weighted is about 4.4
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15/580
AP (place score in parenthesis): didn’t submit even though I passed all of them
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Spanish Lang, physics, AP Macroeconomics, World Lit
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): not really anything but I had AP Scholar with distinction and national hispanic scholar

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Academic Decathlon (secretary), World Scholar’s Cup Club (co-founder and president), Math Club (committee head), NHS
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at school guidance office; intern at the Court of Appeal library
Summer Activities:
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7/10 common app. I liked it at first but when I reread it I realized how bad it sounded
8/10
Why ND? I thought it was funny because I kept on poking fun at my high school in the process. But I explained why I liked the school
Supplements 10/10 I really liked these. They showed off my quirks. I talked about family and hide n seek in one of them to show how close I am to my cousins. In the other, the community one, I talked about the recent lockdowns I had at my school and how it made me consider the importance of school safety.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 I didn’t read it but it was from my Government teacher/Acadec coach. I’ve known him for over three years and he really likes me. I read another recommendatoin letter for him for a scholarship and that one was really good so I think this one was excellent.
Teacher Rec #2: 7/10. Chemistry teacher. Loved her class. Always asked questions. She always commented on me in class and how I was like family to my lab group. Wasn’t as good as the other one because I’m a twin and she probably confused me with my sister
Counselor Rec: 5/10. I’ve talked to her 5 times total. She doesn’t know me
Additional Rec: don’t know if I submitted it here
Interview: n/a

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: history
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public (2200+)
Ethnicity: Mexican
Gender: female
Income Bracket: 200k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Mexican

Reflection

Strengths: URM who loved history. I had decent extracurriculars. I am in the top fifty people in Acadec for my state.
Weaknesses: A non-Catholic girl from California. Although, I did state I was raised in a half-Catholic household and didn’t know what to classify myself as (I really don’t)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly don’t know. I applied last minute on a whim. Notre Dame was originally on my list but I took it off because I thought it be too expensive. I added it back when my dad told me not to worry about the cost. I really liked my essays cause they showed the quirky and loving side of me. I think that’s why. But honestly I have no idea.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ACCEPTED: UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC San Diego
REJECTED: Stanford, Swarthmore

General Comments: waiting on ivies and duke. But I’m sooooo happy to have gotten in. I honestly thought I had no chance and was preparing myself to go to a UC. I’m grateful that I can go up out of state and be more independent. And when people say to be yourself, they mean it! If you like Pokémon, write about Pokémon. If you like cake, write about cake. As long as it shows you as a person. I’m a twin. My sister got in too. She wrote about stuffed animals. This really shows that you have to be you! Good luck to everyone who’s reading this on their decisions!

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): DECA (School chapter president and state champion in two events), Student Council (2 years as secretary), National Honor Society (Treasurer), Campus Ministry, Mock Trial (Captain), Peer Tutoring, Theatre, Cross Country
Job/Work Experience: 2 summer office jobs - one at local State Farm office, one at my dad’s business
Volunteer/Community service: Heavy church involvement as a lector and EME. Various service over the years at a wide variety of places, which earned me a Gold Service Award at my school.
Summer Activities: I have done Notre Dame’s Summer Scholars program for the past two years. Though they assure that it doesn’t give you a leg up in admissions, I certainly recommend it to anyone and everyone - it truly reaffirmed to me that Notre Dame was the place I wanted to be and helped me to develop close relationships that will carry over into college, since a number of kids from the program also attend/will attend ND. I also serve as a counselor at a summer Girl Scout camp.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): CommonApp: 10, Supplemental Essays: 9. I spent a lot of time on these.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Never read, but I have a super close relationship with my English teacher who is a phenomenal writer and knows me better than most. I highly suggest forming a tight relationship with your teachers
Teacher Rec #2: Did not submit

Weaknesses: Math ACT score; GPA could have been higher; community service could have been greater or more explicitly outlined

Each and every one of you should be so proud of where you’re headed and it’s been an honor to make your acquaintance.
Go Irish!

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App Essay: (10/10) I talked about my passion for writing and how it helped me find my voice and how I will use my gift in the future to influence the world. Why ND Essay: (11/10) lol. I literally put my heart and soul into this essay. It contained both passion and content. I wrote about how touchdown Jesus welcomed me to the family, the grotto being my favorite place, and the Golden Dome illuminating the campus. I also wrote, however, about my ability to change the world, ignite self discovery, and the unique spirit of camaraderie, tradition, and Catholicism on campus. My second supplement was about which pillar resonates most within you and I picked the mind: (10/10) I tied religion and a very successful food drive I ran into my essay and talked about the ability for us to create miracles when we put our mind to something. My third essay was What is one thing you know for a fact and why are you certain: (11/10) haha I absolutely LOVED this one. I wrote about how I was certain that pigs could fly. I then made up quotes from scientists/intellectuals stating how that literally defies the principles of science, they don’t have wings, blah blah blah. Then I basically said you can’t let negativity stop you from changing the world. People in the past may have laughed at the idea of flying cars or laptops but sometimes the craziest ideas help to create the supposed “impossible.” Then I continued to say that pigs actually could fly and they already have. They prefer Southwest Airlines with a desitination to the Bahamas. (Had to get some humor in there lol)

Teacher Rec #1: (10/10)
Teacher Rec #2: (10/10)
Counselor Rec: (10/10) Since we can’t read the letters of rec, I can’t say for sure how helpful they were in the application process. However, I did stress to my teachers and guidance counselor that Notre Dame is my top school and really value the letters of rec haha. Also, I had a close relationship with my guidance counselor and asked her to include about my basically teaching myself AP Physics because my teacher wasn’t there most of the year and earning an A. It really reflects ND’s mission of learning through discovery.

ACT 34
GPA 3.76 uw

weak ECs

My guess is that a downward grade trend got him. He loved ND, Catholic, from a school that regularly sends to ND, but understood that there’s no room for slippage at a school that competitive.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

CA - 5/10 - Pretty standard, I’m bad at writing really amazing things so I just wrote a typical essay about the many different parts of my robotics team and how it has changed me as a person throughout high school.

What excites you about the University of Notre Dame that makes it stand out from other institutions? - 9/10
I focused primarily on discussing the many traditions Notre Dame has and how I would love to join in on the festivities. I made these pretty informal.

Which pillar or pillars resonate most with you? Why? - 7/10
Chose mind and talked about my movement to raise awareness in more depth, pretty standard, nothing special besides how the actual activity I talked about was unique

What is one thing that you know for a fact? Why are you certain? - 10/10
Loved this one, I talked about how I knew I loved learning foreign languages. Made a joke and continued with a pun + deeper meaning combo sorta thing.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: English, probably really strong because he’s my favorite teacher and I love helping him & the whole English department out when I have free periods throughout the school week
Teacher Rec #2: Physics, not sure if strong or standard. Didn’t really form that big of a bond with this teacher, but apparently he only did recs for a select few
Counselor Rec: Being that she has 70+ students to take care of, probably generic but on the better side since I go to her very often. Parents also keep in touch with her often so perhaps it makes her give more attention to me somewhat?
