@mahleen
do you have science IB credits?
also try to take financial accounting (and a intro business course) over the winter if you can

I am considering transferring to NYU, Arts and Sciences for my Sophomore year and was wondering what my chances would be to get in AND receive sufficient financial aid because otherwise I can’t go.
My High School GPA was about a 4.0 unweighted and I graduated 9th out of 218 students.
My SAT scores were 660 Reading, 660 Writing, and 710 Math.
I am currently a student at Brandeis University and my major will probably be Chemistry but I’m not completely sure about that.
I’m taking Honors Chemistry with Lab, French (third level), Intro to Cognitive Neuroscience, and Calc 2 and I expect to get a GPA somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.0 this semester.
The financial aid that I get here is sufficient so I was wondering if that would transfer or not
Thank You

@dbengt5
financial aid doesn’t transfer. NYU is known for not-so-great fin aid, and they give out less in transfer aid. i think your best bet is to just apply and see how much you get if you really want to transfer to NYU. but it will most likely be less aid than you are receiving at Brandeis. (i think Brandeis usually gives out pretty good aid so maybe a good chunk less.)

Not sure why you would want to transfer out of Brandeis esp when your doing well there. i love NYU, but in you case Brandeis has a better science department and its cheaper lol.

Anyways, 3.5 GPA puts you in the running but to be safe you should aim for 3.7+. plus, your high school profile is good enough for you to have been admitted as a freshman, and thats a big plus for a sophomore transfer.

good luck!

Thanks for your help!
My college’s course catalog does not say anything abt sem hrs but the Dean’s office page says that typically 1 credit at my college: 4sem hrs. So i ll have 16 hrs this sem and 16 hrs next sem. I am applying to Stern as a fall transfer. I had A-Levels Accounting and Business Studies in high school and I scored As in both. My college’s econ dept is not allowing me take Intermediate econ just because I am a freshmen even though i had an A in A-Levels Econ.

Hey I’m currently a freshman considering transfer to nyu or possibly upenn (but i love nyc so…). I’m a business administration major with premed and the Fall 2011 deadline’s sometime in February or March right? What should I do to improve my Ec’s and better increase my chances to get into business schools!! I’m currently in a rather small public college therefore the opportunities are much less… My gpa should probably be around a 3.8 and I’m trying really hard to push it higher but I dont really think it will work out… I’m a member of various clubs in the school that are business related ( Finance club, Economics Society, SIFE, Habitat for Humanity, among many others). I’m also trying to volunteer for multiple events as well to increase my portfolio. What else should I do!!!

I’m currently taking micro economics and applied calc as business courses and I’ll be taking accounting, macro econs, maybe calc 2 and english composition next semester probably!

@relish12

To be considered for fall admission you must have the application in by April 1.
I also think your Applied Calculus course will not satisfy the Calculus requirement.
I would make sure you your course is equivalent to a Calculus I. Other than that just focus on your GPA.

@MitchAPalooza

Does this mean I should only apply when it is closer to the deadline?

Also, for my school’s business program and I think all other programs, applied calc I fulfills the same requirements as Calc I; they are used in an either/ or format.

@relish12
Alright. Just wanted to make sure. Better to be sure now than find out the hard way later.
No. Try to submit your application way ahead of the deadline, which is April 1. In addition to submitting the application, send your transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, etc. a good 2-3 weeks before the deadline. Potentially even sooner to allow them sufficient time to arrive or in case they get lost, you will have enough time to re-send the documents.

Thank you tallFrodo,
The reasons I want to transfer are not academic. I f they were I wouldn’t even consider transferring for the reasons that you said. I just can’t see myself here for four years and I feel like Brandeis just isn’t the right fit. I hope that you’re wrong about the financial aid hahaha, but thanks for the input. I can probably deal with slightly less financial aid, considering the fact that I hate it here but not much. I guess I should probably consider transferring to other schools then, any suggestions?
Thanks again.

sophomore level transfers to stern are recommended to have completed:
1 semester of micro econ (intermediate level preferred)
2 semesters of writing
1 semester of calc
1 semester of statistics w/ a calculus requirement
1 semester of finanical accounting
1 semester of science

*your applied calculus will probably NOT satisfy this requirement even though in you college it is used as an ‘either or’.

extracurricular-wise try to get an internship and get a leadership position in some clubs (being a member doesn’t help much).

@dbengt

what do you like about NYU, and what do you not like about your school? what are your top priorities when looking for a school (academics, location, size, name-value etc)?

keep in mind that most schools have less money to spend on transfer students though.

@tallFrodo

Sophomore level transfers meaning transferring immediately after freshman year right. Yeah I have leadership positions in several clubs, but internships are not a possibility right now. That means I would have to take calc 2 next semester? Lol I’m going to have to take writing, accounting, macroecons, calc 2, bio, bio lab… not cool. I dont think i’d be able to take statistics as well considering the amount of classes I have to take next semester.

@dbengt
although you are recommended to havee completed the courses i mentioned above, the requirements are just…

1 semester of micro econ (intermediate level preferred)
1 semesters of writing
1 semester of calc

but of course having completed all the recommended courses will make you more competitive.

yes, sophomore fall transfers apply next semester and start attending their new school in fall 2011

you only need calc 1. (1 semester of calc) so that will free up a slot for stat i think

oops, above post meant for relish not dbengt

@tallfrodo-they don’t unless you’re applying to Steinhardt-i got worried about that so I called and talked directly to a Steinhardt admissions officer-apparently steinhardt and a few other schools within NYU accept second semester freshman, but the majority of NYU schools don’t take second semester freshmen

@kmart
oh ok. sorry for providing you with incorrect info. good luck! :)

@kmart153

Any idea about the Stern school of business regarding second semester freshman?

@relish12

Stern doesn’t accept spring semester students.

@tallFrodo is correct when he posted:
There are only two type of transfers. Fall and spring. For example (this is what it would look for a spring transfer)

First year at your Institution:

** Fall Semester**:
- Course X
- Course Y
- Course Z
- Course Alpha

Sometime during the fall semester, you would need to apply for admission. If accepted you would start your spring semester at your new school.

The person above would be classified as a Freshman, because he has still not finished one year of school.Of course you can also have a person who has accumulated one year of schooling. In that case, he would be classified as second semester Sophomore because he has still yet to complete his Sophomore spring semester.

A fall transfer would look like this"

First year at your Institution:

** Fall Semester 1**:
- Course A
- Course B
- Course C
- Course D

Semester 2:
- Course E
- Course F
- Course G
- Course H

The applicant would apply sometime during his second semester. If accepted, he would start his fall semester at the new school (his sophomore year).

I apologize for my scattered thoughts. I could of worded it a little more clearly, but hopefully it made sense.

@relish

yup, as mitchapalooza said, stern doesn’t take spring transfers at all, including 2nd semester freshmen
