[/size] Stats:[ul]
[] SAT/ACT: 2290 (CR 750, M 770, WR 770)
[] SAT IIs: Math2 800
[] GPA (UW): I moved to America from Korea in the middle of sophomore year, so hard to calculate.
[] GPA (W): 5.15/6.0 at time of application, just my American GPA. Had to additionally send in my Korean high school transcript! My Korean grades reallyreallyreally sucked. I brought up my senior year first semester grades up a lot though! I would say everything averaged out to about a B+ in all advanced level classes.
[] Rank: Top 10%
[] Leadership Positions: Math Team captain, NHS Officer, Student Congress, Mu Alpha Theta president
[] Awards/Honors: Qualified for AIME in 11th, won some math awards, won some MUN awards, straight high honors and AP Scholar with Honor… Our math team is pretty darn good, so we won some awards as a team too.
[] Other Extra-curricular: Math tutor at nearby middle school, Leo club, Amnesty International, Model UN…
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Wrote about my love for Spock for Common App. Showed who I was. For my NYU one, I wrote about what I wanted to do at the school, what classes I wanted to take and why, where I wanted to study abroad and why, etc. I had a definite plan set in front of me and it showed how much interest and knowledge I had in/of NYU.
[] Teacher Recs: I’m assuming pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: I’m assuming pretty good. I was able to get close to her personally, because she always kept an eye out for me.
[] Hooks (if any): NOOOO idea. I always thought that my grades would KILL me… but I guess my grades are decent coming from a newcomer to the country?? Girl who wants to do math, a lot of math related accomplishments, managed to successfully become a part of the community in less than two years… Yeah. I honestly have NO idea why a college would ever accept me lol. THANK YOU NYU <3
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Connecticut (but originally from S. Korea)
[] School Type: Public, rural, only competitive among the top 10%
[] Ethnicity: East Asian
[] Gender: Female
[li] Financial Aid information (see description): received a generous (well, it’s NYU, so ‘generous’ can mean a lot of things lol) amount of merit scholarship money! Trying to see if I can negotiate a slightly higher amount though.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Statements:[ul]
[] Other Factors: International. Girl who wants to do math?
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? My SAT scores, my essays The NYU one really showed my passion for the school. My ECs were pretty good for someone who had been in this country for less than two years. I had a lot of math-related ECs too. My GPA really worried me though, b/c my Korean grades SUCKED and my Junior year grades were pretty much straight B+s.
[li] General Comments: After getting rejected from 8 schools in 3 days, an acceptance email from one of my favorite schools is awesome. 87% sure I will be attending next year![/li][/ul]

[] Essays: Pretty good, CA essay was about my experience with horses, and my NYU essay discussed my extensive traveling, and how that fit in with NYU’s global culture.
[] Teacher Recs: Very good most likely, as I had great relationships with both of the teachers who wrote me letters.
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure…probably good.

[] Other Factors: Eh, nothing really.
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? I’m honestly not sure, but my essays were well written, so that probably helped a lot. I didn’t think I was a very competitive applicant given my stats, but I think only 1 other person from my school applied, and they were rejected.

[li] Financial Aid information (see description): Full need met with scholarships, grants and work/study. Totally in shock. Whoever said NYU is not generous with merit aid lied. NYU beat every other offer I’ve gotten.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Statements:[ul]
[] Other Factors:
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? NYU was my number one choice and I made sure my regional rep knew how much I wanted to attend. Maybe my excitement about the opportunities NYU offers, ACT score, unusual ECs with being selected as a Rotary Exchange Student, math scores, and AP tests. Demonstrated a love for rigorous classes in essays.

[li] General Comments: I feel blessed beyond anything I could have imagined to get to attend NYU this fall. I keep thinking I’m gonna wake up and find out that I dreamed this day. The people from NYU I’ve talked to have been so kind and helpful. Their generous merit aid completely blew everyone else out of the water. Now I don’t have to worry about the cost and can instead immerse myself in all the awesomeness NYU offers. NYU - you rock. I am so grateful.[/li][/ul]

[] Essays: I thought they were good. I wrote about overcoming an extreme (sort of subconscious) fear. A lot of people say to not mention NYC in the “why NYU” essay, but I just couldn’t leave it out completely. It felt like I was lying, and I couldn’t do that. NYC has been a dream of mine since I was a child, and it’s how I heard of NYU 6 years ago. Of course, that was only ONE of many reasons I fell in love with this school, and the bulk of my essay revolved around the other (more significant) points. I think mentioning the city actually helped me, because it gave my essay a sense of honesty.
[] Teacher Recs: Great
[] Counselor Rec: Probably good. I don’t know my counselor very well (distance learning, online school), but I didn’t give her any reason to dislike me.

[] Leadership Positions:
Tons of stuff with the European Youth Parliament (EYP): selected for/attended 13 international events as delegate, organiser, journalist, chairperson, vice-president, president in 4 countries (Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Austria), elected head-organiser of 300-participant event, organised International Forum gathering delegates from various countries in Europe, elected member of Regional Board (in charge of Alumni Network and Public Relations), president of school club, coordinator-in-chief of all regional clubs, raised a total amount of $90,000 to finance various events, delivered various speeches in front of 250-people audiences, etc. I remain utterly convinced that this played a considerable role in my admission.
Student Government: elected student body representative, elected at School Council, organised various events (school music festival, prom, Europe Day…), peer tutor
Varsity Basketball co-captain (regional champions)
[] Awards/Honors: selected for the French Concours Général des Lycées in English Literature (results pending) awarding the best students in the country, IGCSEs English Language A and Spanish w/ listening A, 1st place at some national maths competition in 10th grade with a few other students in the team, school Student Merit Award for two consecutive years for academic and extracurricular involvement.
[] Other Extra-curricular:
Creative writing: wrote a novel, novellas, flash fiction, poetry, published newspaper articles and writing
Mountaineering: completed ascension of Mont-Blanc massif and summits up to 10,000ft., organised 5-day mountaineering trek, canyoneering, hiking, skiing in the Alps since age 4
Home exchanges and languages: 35 home exchanges in 15 countries in Europe, I can hold basic conversations in 11 languages but I am fluent in 4 (French, English, Spanish, Romanian), I am self-taught in Romanian which I made my second facultative option in the Baccalauréat, I was hosted by a family in Arizona for a month at age 13, by myself, without much English language skillfulness.
Drawing, painting and photography: had my artwork exhibited several times at regional galleries, published photography, won some regional awards a few years ago, fashion garments drawing, member of art club for 6 years
Dobro, guitar, bass and drums: I have been playing the guitar for 11+ years, organised and took part in frequent concerts with 2 bands (one is all-girls, the other one is mainly jazz and indie), self-taught drummer, dobro player, and I occasionally teach friends the guitar (for free, indeed).
Acting: theater club (responsible for communication and marketing), leads/starring roles in school plays and musicals both in English and French, and I also do playwriting as an occasional hobby.
English tutoring/lessons: I founded my own English private tutoring program 4 years ago, and I currently teach 8 kids ages 7-18 and 10 adults (5-6 hours a week). I equally conducted and organised an immersion camp for French kids last summer.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Common App: 10/10. I struggled (and cried) so much trying to come up with a snappy essay topic. This literally was one of my main fears applying to college last fall. My CA essay was about a mountaineering trek I did with my three best friends, to illustrate my strength of character, determination and ambition (generic theme, but hold on). But I also opened up completely and let them see through my flaws and weaknesses, and this is, I think, where the essay got a little deeper. I spent a gargantuan amount of time polishing each and every descriptive passage so as to paint as vivid a landscape as possible. Each and every of my words added something to the essay, and using evocative verbs helped a lot aswell. In the essay, I recounted a discussion my friends and I had camping around a bonfire in a deserted landscape, which added to the dramatic tension without compromising the gravity and sincerity of my words. In this discussion, I explained to them my vision of gender, love and sexuality, thus I touched on my bisexuality in the essay. I actually remember bursting into tears writing this bit down for the first time. I think the emotion came through. NYU Supplement: 8/10. I used the extended metaphor of crunching in a varicolored apple to describe my first (and last, actually) encounter with NYC. I then mentioned their study abroad program, but overall I believe my suitability with NYU came through quite well. I believe I also briefly alluded to LGBTQ support available at NYU – which does mean a lot to me. I managed to show them my interest in their school, and why they should be interested in me.
[] Teacher Recs: I submitted two (additional recommendation). The first one was from my past years’ economics and sociology teacher. Outstandingly wonderful, although I did give him a little hand with the translation part. ‘Best in 20 years of teaching’ 10/10. My additional letter was submitted by my US Acting teacher from a school in Florida where I was selected to spend three months via an inter-school exchange program. She mentioned patient leadership, witty sense of humor, personal growth throughout the three months; 10/10 without a shadow of a doubt.
[] Counselor Rec: Quite terrible and very generic, to be honest. I had the change to read her recommendation, and the overall feeling that emerged out of this letter was that of a trite, dull, apparently-just-a-little-outstanding student. Although my counselor was British, it was not especially well-written, and most of the letter included repetitive content. Instead of completing my application, it essentially weighed it down. Still, I would give it a 5/10 since it comprised a few interesting comments and adjectives nevertheless.
[] Hooks (if any): I never thought I had any, but maybe bisexuality? European Youth Parliament involvement?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: France
[] School Type: Large international public (2,000 students), not necessarily very well-ranked
[] Ethnicity: White as snow

[/ul]Other Statements:[ul]
[] Other Factors: None I can think of
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? Well, you tell me. After getting rejected from all the Ivy League schools I applied to (so all of them except Dartmouth), this came like a wonderful, unexpected surprise. I will be forever grateful that NYU saw something in me.
[li] General Comments: Be the best you can possibly be throughout those 4 years of highschool. It may seem like a lot, but it really isn’t if you get involved in something that you love. If you don’t have any passions, try out different things. The chances are you’ll gradually fall in love with a sport, activity, organisation… This is an extremely stereotypical speech, I will give you that. But trust me, it worked for me. Don’t ever lose hope, and keep going. Best of luck if you took the time (or didn’t) to read this! It felt like my duty to share my stats, as I spent so much time reading others’ – though please do not forget that CC does not represent the full panel of applicants, whether admitted, or rejected. CC is an ephemeral help, but you do have to bear in mind that it isn’t necessarily the absolute Truth, if ever that exists.[/li][/ul]

[] Other Factors: I did write an email to the admissions director. It was very last minute, and one of those “spur of the moment”/visceral actions, but I am glad I did it. I sent it about a week before admission decisions were supposed to come out (April 1st), and I am honestly not sure if he read it. I really did put a lot of passion in that email. I talked about my love for teaching others and how I write everyday. I also talked about how I do not think my SAT scores are a good representation of myself as an individual who is hardworking and very driven. I was also very nice, sincere, respectful, and not too pushy or aggressive.
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? I think that the amount of emotion and passion that I put into my essays really helped. My forte is writing so I tried to play to my strengths as much as possible. I admire NYU for their attention to character, not just numbers/scores.
[li] General Comments: I honestly thought I was not going to be accepted after getting denied to BU and Uconn Storrs. I was absolutely shocked. I still can’t even believe that I got accepted, and words cannot describe how happy I am. The tuition and all the fees are killer with a whopping 66k. I’m applying for tons of scholarships right now. Good luck to future applicants!!![/li][/ul]

[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected: I have absolutely no clue
[li] General Comments: I’m devastated. I love NYU, it’s campus, it’s involvement in the city, the culture and the proximity/recruiting at Wall St. All I can do now is express my interest and leave the rest to hope…which definitely sucks.[/li] [/ul]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: The NYU essay was good, not brilliant. I think the key is to find 2 unique things about NYU’s “atmosphere” and flesh those out. Relating what you write to the culture of your country also helps you to stand out
[] Teacher Recs: Flattering but very attribute-focussed rather than touting achievements.
[] Counselor Rec: Never got to see it but I think it was rushed
[] Hooks (if any): I played up the fact that I was a playwright who had several productions under my belt. Whether these were good or bad plays are not too relevant; I think they just want to see if you take initiative

[] Other Factors:
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected: Honestly, I think the process is pretty arbitrary. That being said, if you present yourself as someone who spearheads his or her own projects, I think that impresses them more than the success rate of your ventures. For international students, ALWAYS make sure you talk about where you come from. We all want to go the States because we’re American by heart but they’re not going to care about you if you’ve not done work specifically for your community
[li] General Comments: This decision doesn’t mean as much as you think. I got rejected by UCLA Film & USC. The latter I understand, but with no disrespect to UCLA, are we seriously saying a film programme that just germinated triumphs what Tisch has to offer? Don’t attach too much importance to whether you’re accepted or rejected. Especially for a field like film, success depends on whether or not you embark on projects on your own. No reason you can’t get behind a camera while pursuing any other degree. All the best and stay calm :)[/li][/ul]

Subjective:
Essays: Common App: Everyone who read it told me it was great and unique (talked about how I find identity and counter blending in to the masses). Supplement: Can’t really remember. I don’t think it was anything special, but I know I talked about seeking diversity.
Teacher Recs: Didn’t see, but I’m assuming they were decent.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see, probably pretty average.
Hooks (if any): N/A

State or Country: Florida
School Type: Medium-sized public high school from the bad side of town with an IB program. Has received some national recognition, but nothing terribly significant.

Financial Aid information (see description): Waiting to hear back; the system reported they never received my non-custodial profile for the CSS, but I definitely submitted it.

Other Statements:
Other Factors: Heavy course load of both AP and IB classes carried all throughout high school
Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? Maybe because they liked my essays, but I think it’s mostly because of my good test scores and decent GPA.
General Comments: Rejected from USC, Vandy, and Emory (those were my major reach schools).
Accepted here, UMiami w/ President’s Scholarship, and UF into the Honors Program. Whether or not I get some financial aid, be it loans, grants, or scholarships, is definitely going to affect my decision to attend or not.

[] Essays: The essay topic was such a snore Took me about a month to push myself to write it but I finally wrote about an episode of How I Met Your Mother when Robin is trying to prove she’s a New Yorker, and how I related to her perseverance. Not the best essay I’ve written, but I thought it was decent in the end!
[] Teacher Recs: I can’t remember which ones I used… I thought they were all decent. I wasn’t supposed to read them but I asked a couple of them for extra copies and opened them lmao.
[] Counselor Rec: Um, decent. Lol
[] Hooks (if any): I think my internship at NASA helped a bit. I mentioned that my dad was an alumni in the essay as well. Oh and my winning the film festival probably helped me stand out!

[li] General Comments: Let me tell you something now - don’t listen to this website. Seriously. Yeah there are good comments and advice sometimes, but trust me, some people on here want to intimidate you and make you feel less worthy. I spent a lot of time on this website convinced that if I did get in, NYU would give me about $3 in financial aid, since all anyone would talk about is how terrible their FA is and how only geniuses got this. Don’t let it stop you! I ended up getting a full tuition scholarship, which I didn’t even think was possible so I cried a lot lol. You honestly never know, so just make the leap. Good luck! Stay strong guys![/li][/ul]
