I’ve spent hundreds of hours studying for it, also see awards]

[] Essays: Common App: 7/10 ; Why NYU: 6/10
[
] Teacher Recs: 9.5/10; From my AcaDec coach, we’re incredibly close and I’ve had 4 classes with her, I consider her a close friend rather than a teacher so it’s very good I believe
Additional Rec: 6/10; From my calc teacher who I’ve had for two years. We’re close, but not as close as acadec coach
[] Counselor Rec: Counselor Rec: 5.5/10; Average, she knows my name and that’s a big deal at a large public school that hasn’t ever sent a student to an ivy

[] State or Country: AZ
[
] School Type: Large public

[li] Financial Aid information (see description): Full tuition scholarship was awesome, I might get some more financial aid on the official day[/li]
[/ul]Other Statements:[ul]
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? URM, scores, dedication to my EC
[
] General Comments: I applied to NYU thinking that I’d get no money whatsoever, but today changed that. I’m really ecstatic, and this dean scholar program has made me really consider NYU. Good luck to everyone else and if you don’t make it, I’m sure you’ll end up somewhere just as good!!
[li] Where else you were accepted/rejected: Accepted to Penn (likely letter), Northeastern, and ASU. Waiting on Columbia, Cornell, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale [/li][/ul]

**Decision: Accepted - Martin Luther King Jr Scholar **
**Admitted School: CAS **
Stats:[ul]
[] ACT: 31 ACT - 31 E, 26 M, 34 R, 32 S
[
] SAT IIs: 690 Literature (I don’t believe I sent these to NYU)
[] GPA (UW): 3.98
[
] GPA (W): 4.66
[] Rank: N/A
[
] Leadership Positions: Vice President of National Honor Society, represented local LGBT center and spoke at Fall Annual Benefit, one of two state representatives at Planned Parenthood’s Generation Action conference , Center for Great Apes fundraiser (began and ran, giving speeches throughout my surrounding area and raising close to $2000), Battered Women and Children fundraiser, Holiday Cards for Heroes.
[] Awards/Honors: Inducted as “Great Ape Defender” through the Center, but other than this, I’ve mostly received “attendance” honors (ie: being selected to attend Camp Psych, Generation Action conference, etc.)
[
] Other Extra-curricular: Horseback riding, weekly volunteer for LGBT center, Camp Psychology at Gettysburg College, Running Club, Diversity Club, occasional acting in NYC

[/ul]** Subjective: **[ul]
[] Essays: I was very nervous with my Common App essay. Although I felt it represented who I was very well, it went a bit outside the box a bit (spoke of my love for languages), and I was worried it didn’t fit the prompt very well.
[
] Teacher Recs: Good/Decent. I skipped my junior year and only had my senior year teachers to ask. Regardless, they were very kind (both let me read them before submitting).
[] Counselor Rec: Very, very good. I’ve worked closely with my guidance counselor for most of my high school career, and she ended up writing a two page recommendation on my behalf.
[
] Hooks (if any): My mother fell ill during my freshman year, and I’ve been helping to take care of her throughout my high school life. I certainly didn’t mention this in my application (I found it to be a very inappropriate), however my guidance counselor did go into detail about it in her recommendation. Additionally, I’m a first generation college student and low income.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Pennsylvania
[
] School Type: Very low ranking Cyber Charter School. This was one of my biggest concerns when applying.
[] Ethnicity: White
[
] Gender: Female
[li] Financial Aid information (see description): $45k scholarship per year, which is just absolutely unbelievable. I couldn’t be happier. [/li]
[/ul]Other Statements:
[] Why do you think you were accepted/rejected? : I honestly don’t know. I’ve been a complete and utter wreck the past few weeks, and was almost certain I’d be denied. I suppose it was mostly my community involvement, essay, and GPA.
[
] Where else you were accepted/rejected: University of St Andrews in Scotland, Fordham, Arcadia (backup), Pittsburgh (backup). Still waiting to hear back from Columbia and Georgetown, but I don’t think either of those are going to happen.

General Comments: I’m still in a state of shock. NYU has been one of my top choices for as long as I can remember, and to receive a scholarship and admittance to to MLK scholars program is just so, so exciting. Best of luck to everyone still waiting. This process can be absolutely brutal, but in the end it will work out. As a side comment, try not to compare yourselves to others TOO much online as, for me, it really only made the waiting process that much worse.

[] Essays: I honestly believed that my NYU essay was ehhhh. To me, it was mediocre. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about NYU! I love this university! It was that I felt whatever I created was inadequate. I talked about how they were a global university and how that would fashion me into a global leader. My common app essay was about my parent’s divorce, how it affected me, and how I needed to freaking suck it up and get on with my life.
[
] Teacher Recs: I thought they were pretty good…I have no idea. I’m close with a lot of my teachers so I can only assume

SUBJECTIVE:
Essays: Common App: 10/10 ; Why NYU: 9/10

Teacher Recs: 10/10; From my English teacher. We were together for two years and she loves me so we have a good relationship. I also had my theatre teacher write a letter, and he and I get along quite well too. He was able to attest to my artistic abilities (I am going to Tisch for MT).
Counselor Rec: Counselor Rec: 7/10; She doesn’t know me all that well, as she just replaced my last counselor and I’ve only known her for junior and senior year. She is friendly though, and we get along, so her letter reflected me well.

LOCATION/PERSON:
State or Country: IL, USA
School Type: Large public in small-ish suburb (about 3500 kids)
Ethnicity: African American/Black
Gender: Female
Financial Aid information (see description): Single unemployed parent household, I am an only child, and I am in the lower middle class. I was given a full tuition scholarship from Tisch, plus pell grant from FAFSA. So that rounds off to about $72.6 for my freshman year. Whew!

OTHER STMTS:
Why do you think you were accepted? My CommonApp was strong, my supplements were strong (I am a strong writer overall), my GPA is pretty good and my test scores were the same. I had to audition for MT as well, and my vocal and acting abilities probably (of course they did haha) helped me a lot
General Comments: I didn’t think I would get accepted and if I did, I thought I would get little to no Fin Aid. But I did both, and am very happy and excited! Best of luck to you all in your college search!
Where else you were accepted/rejected: Accepted to Northwestern University, University of Southern California, and Columbia College Chicago. Rejected from Columbia University, Yale University, and California Institute of the Arts. NYU Tisch was my first choice though, so I am happy!

[]Strengths: Internships & intense focus on a single interest (journalism in this case).
[
]Weaknesses: GPA for sure, and the fact that I’m an overrepresented minority from an overrepresented area of an overrepresented state.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My internships & essays were pretty bomb.
[
]Where else you are applying or have already applied:[ /list] Accepted to Carnegie Mellon, USC, NYU, Bryn Mawr, Smith, & Rice! Waitlisted at Notre Dame, Wellesley, Barnard, & Boston College (huh?!). Rejected by Penn, Brown ED, Georgetown, Northwestern, WUSTL, Vanderbilt, & Johns Hopkins.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: When one door closes, another opens. That’s the case for me this year during this application process; I was in despair after Brown straight-up rejected me in the ED round since pretty much everyone is usually deferred rather than rejected, but I’m very excited to join Rice in this fall! More than happy to be an Owl
