Official October 18, 2006 PSAT Discussion

Oh yeah there was that one sentance to less to than to or something that was really akward so i changed it...

About the phoenix critical reading question, I put answer choice D (this was the last question I had to go back to, so I thought it was tricky too). B seemed plausible because it says it symbolized a rebirth of her public life, but at the same time, they don't mention much/if anything of a public life. D was that she had failed (in Africa) but then became a successful artist.

I know for sure I got three math questions wrong (the average I did a really really stupid error... the k x^a I also did a stupid error... the lengths of a triangle I simply didn't know). I'm feeling rather disappointed right now. Raw scores in math translate more severely into points than the english sections.

As for the second question in Section 5 - time in history WHERE or time in history WHEN? I thought it was when, something like choice D with pronoun antecedent agreement... or something...

when is correct

What was the train 1.
Where the train goes in the tunnel and then comes out
how many feet long is the tunnel?

i thought i did ok

How do u do the math problems with the A (triangle)B
because i never learned that and im in integrated 3

You plug in numbers. It's just a formula

i was just wondering on the grid ins i kno i got 120 but i forgot the question what was it again?

and then for one of the last few writing questions there was a question about how to make a trasition from sentence 5 to 6 and i was deciding between In a case like this and Whatever the reason and in the end i chose WHatever the reason so just wondering what everybodyelse put

120 was the triangle where an angle of 30 was given, and it was an isosceles, so the othertriangle was 30 too, and 180 - 60 was 120...

Math:

Area of quadrilateral (almost-a-triangle thingy in the grid) – 3.5

Train in the tunnel – 1200

Rst rectangle box– square root

Which one could be a triangle – 7,8,9

How many odd numbers – 125

How many students – 18

Ratio of the wheel- 7.5

What cant have a remainder of 5 – 5

Ecdf - e>d>c>f

Cost to mail the package – 2.5

F(K) G(K) – 0

Answer to a grid in – 6007

X-K – 0

Average - 280

T in terms of A - -14a

square root of x - 3 = 8 - 120

how many months had more than the previous month graph - 3

possible value of x that would make (x-2.73)(x-3.45) negative - 3, could be others

0<a<b<6<c<d (grid in) - 9

what was the 620th digit in the sequence - 9

calendar with july and august - saturday

perpendicular line to y=mx+b - -1/2....can anyone else confirm this?

Critical Reading:

Sentence Completion:
Applause- tacit

Something about corporate people and profit – vaunted

Modern critic – its looking like most people think its incontrovertible/trouble

resilient

conspiratorial/innocuous?

Beach Short Passage:
Youthful adventurousness

Around the world Short Passage:
Authors attitude toward man - Indifferent/critical (so far it is split about 50/50)

Smooth - suave

Spanish Long Passage:
“hum” – constant presence

“expand” – spread

why was the author unfair to Spanish – one historical process to its spread

Robot Long Passage:
“mindchildren”- they were offspring and will surpass

Danish African Long Passage:
“raise” be put up for consideration

“exercise” use

pain in art with the quote from someone who knew her - transmuting the pain into art

which of the following best expresses the claim that Dinesen was a "great mythmaker”- Dinesen constructed a public identity as carefully as she constructed her stories

The parenthetical phrase - emphasize that Dinesen's life is not easily distinguished from the myth

phoenix – she was regenerated after a disappointment and became a successful artist

Fourth paragraph is unique because - is critical of Dinesen's character

The comment implies that - Dinesen's behavior cannot be evaluated in absolute moral terms

which best contrasts Dineson in Kenya and in Denmark - An awe-inspiring figure versus a contradictory individual

Genetically Modified Food Passages:
What would passage 2 say about the risks – acceptable or slight....this one is also split.....its looking like acceptable

Writing:

“John and I” – wrong, should be john and me.

“Indonesia jewels” – wrong, suspending should be suspended

“inspire” – wrong, should be “inspired by”, not “inspired from"

"visual to" - this one was about climbing a mountain and being able to see the city, but it was wrong because it said "visual to" instead of "visible"

"the service that has increased in cost is" - hospital care

"little advances have been made toward civil rights" - no error

also, at the end of the critical reading section, there were 3 Ds and then 3 Cs

What did you guys put of the "no lesser of an authority than Packman"? I left it as that but I guess that's wrong?

I didn't get an 80 on any section, I already know. That sucks major ass.

"perpendicular line to y=mx+b - -1/2....can anyone else confirm this?"

I got 1/2

It was 2x+y = k (can't remember what k was but it doesn't matter
so it's y = -2x + k

neg reciprocal of -2 = 1/2

Actually..for the quadrilateral one I got 4.5..what I did was to solve for the equations of both the diagonal lines, then graph them and find the intersection point. From the intersection point I was able to find the distance from vertex to vertex and use 1/2bh to solve for the area of the triangle..that gave me the answer of 4.5

yeah, for the perpendicular line it is split between -1/2 and 1/2......i dont have a clear correct answer yet.

1/2
im 100% sure.

to graph ically show this to u
take the graph
y=.1x
the perp line def isnt y=10x they go in the same direction and clearrly dont make a 90 degree angle. But -10x works.

andrea, that was amazing. For the Around the World passage, I chose critical - he used strong words like "boasted" and "in one jet-streamed breath" (or something of that nature) that I thought conveyed his distaste. For the GMO passage, I chose acceptable, but of how the benefits outweigh the risk. The author presented statistical information in favor of GMOs, and highlighted only positive points, and seemed to fail to mention risks at all. There was a second part to that answer choice that also didn't sit quite well with me, although I can't recall it.

I agree with mathwiz90, m is 1/2 for sure. Thanks for telling me the answer was when.

Ivy Hopeful, I put no less an authority than. I'm not sure if less or lesser is the appropriate comparative. "Of" seemed unnecessary to me.

Guys, what was the list of all the right answers? I'm not sure if I got all of them right? There's a bunch of different answeres for the train and the 45000 diameter!!!!!!!!!!!!1

How different are the wednsday PSAT's from those on Saturday?

^^yeah, I'm wondering the same thing too. They should be of equal difficulty. does anyone else know?

wondering same^^^
