Official October 21, 2006 PSAT Discussion

darn Ihave two CR wrong so far, let's see best case scenario:
Math: 74 -> can't go any lower than this
CR: 76 -> could go down
Writing: 80
230 :(

uhhhhmm so the final thing is that its wry and not surly? sorry, i know we already discussed it.. but I looked it up:
rude and bad tempered = surly;
disdainful; misdirected= wry.
the person was commenting on how little ability the person had. wouldn't that be rude and bad-tempered instead of misdirected and disdainful?

my worst case scenario is probably like a 100. maybe i did get a 100. i'm stupid. are you guys sophs or juniors?

what was the question to teh wry one?

junior (10 char)

The question was what the nature of the parenthetical remarks were. I put "wry," but I have no idea.

junior!!! 2008 baby!

soph. I put surly for the wry one... what did you put? a lot of people put wry.

I'm a sophomore, but a low grade is still disappointing.

I put surly but, most of my classmates said it is wry

no dude, what was the question for the wry answer choice?

I'm a sophomore :D

I also put surly... lol got that one wrong i guess

What was the tone of the passage (something like that)?

i put 22nd for the sunday one, but the answer is the 21st

hmmmmm i cant remember that being the question...

yeah, everybody says its wry and i dont know why... you see my definitions... wouldnt surly be more fitting? the other three options were like ... "whatever" words.

it is not, that was the gist of the question

sigh, 72 in each section gives CA's NM cutoff, im already there for math;

have to hope for the best in writing and CR...

I hope that other test-takers could provide some feedback about the following Oct. 21 PSAT questions from all three sections (in no particular order):

"disenfranchised/register" for the question about voting (I think that "compromise" could have worked, but "garnered their discontent in a lawsuit" would not have made sense.)

"itinerant" for the question about the peregrine falcon's journey

"wry" for the passage about the uncle's advice("Surly" seemed too harsh and inappropriate, in my opinion.)

"esteem" for how the Korean girl viewed her grandmother ("Humility" came in a close second, though!)

80 for the car question already discussed ad nauseum

"romantic attitude vs. scientific theory" (choice E) for the question in the astronomy passage that went something like, "The phrase 'swift yet painless journey' sets up what contrast?" (I eliminated "interstellar space vs. lower atmosphere" (choice C) because the rays of light had not yet entered the lower atmosphere.)

"x^2 + y^2" for the final math question that set the expression (x+y)(x^2 - y^2) = 0

x^2 + xy for the area of the shaded-in rectangle and square (seemed too easy, though)

"attempt at humor by using different meaning of the same word" (choice B) for the question that referred to the excerpt, "Newton was right...Yes, the clouds were gross" (I debated between choices B and C, but I chose the former because choice C, which maybe said "citation of a reputable authority," just didn't seem right.)

I'll let you chew on these questions for awhile, but don't be too surprised if a lot of other ones appear on this thread!

is surly is the right answer for that question, I will be happy with a potential 78 on CR :D
