I hope Barnard isn’t practicing Tufts Syndrome… I’m happy (now I don’t care much about getting accepted to Columbia) but to be honest I was hoping to be accepted to more selective places. But maybe that won’t happen, since I’ve already been waitlisted by MIT, so I think I shall be satisfied and relax a bit for April 1 =)

What state are you in?!

OK, you caught me. I was actually trying to conceal my location, so I (stupidly) specified a governor’s school that doesn’t exist =( I’m so sorry! I just like to be careful… Sorry again.

Oh, no, I didn’t even see the governors school thing. I wast just curious.

But ARE you in PA?

And don’t worry - state specification is nothing. Honestly.

Haha, I guess it doesn’t matter… I’m just paranoid. And no, I’m not in PA. Er… out of curiosity, why were you curious about my state? =P

physicshobo:

MIT is not a good barometer for reach admissions. they are really stupid some time. know a situation where a top kid from a top prepschool applied early to mit, got wait listed.

in regular, he got harvard, pton, duke,penn,yale,stanford and mit. he went to harvard.

I AM SO EXCITED! Barnard’s definitely my top choice as of right now =D

waitlisted…disappointed beyond belief. wej, did you hear yet?!

Will someone please tell me what tufts syndrom is?

Tufts syndrome is the name people have come up with for the idea that some schools will reject some applicants because they are too well qualified and would end up going to one of the Ivies. Somehow Tufts got the rep for being the school that everyone goes to that could not get into the top tier schools…

I absolutely do not think Barnard would use that tactic. They are out to get the brightest, most diverse and stimulating class possible, I am sure. I do believe they are rather unique in that the adcom does seem to take a more broad-based approach to reviewing and considering their applicants (looking well beyond numbers on standardized tests or even GPAs). So they might take a student that, for example, has started a successful business over one that has scores that are a bit higher.

That does NOT mean they will not accept someone because they think they will just go to a better school any way. Big difference, IMO.

Also I didn’t have an interview.

@physicshobo

To see how far acceptances have gone state-wise. It’s fair if you want to just specify coast or region only, though I do think you’re being super paranoid. Whatever works though.

@iamthinking

Not yet, though I’m prepared for a rejection on Monday. ED took two three days to get to me (deferred, obviously), so I suspect it’ll be bad news this time around too. I’m very depressed right now.

wej, don’t lose hope yet! And if Barnard doesn’t work out for you, I’m more than confident that you’ll be spectacular anywhere. I’m crossing my fingers hard for you :]

East coast then. I’m sorry you haven’t gotten your decision yet! Let’s hope big envelopes take longer! =)

I agree with churchmusicmom that Barnard is looking for the best of its applicant pool – or, rather, “best fit”. I do think that they might engage in some second guessing if they get apps that seem to telegraph that the student is more interested in Columbia and a likely admit there. They probably want to avoid cross-admits with Columbia if possible and they are probably are pretty good at spotting the characteristics of apps from students who just see Barnard as their backup plan for Columbia.

I do think that test scores are the least significant part of the application, assuming they are “in range”. (And the “range” that is o.k. is the full range that is accepted each year). My d. was accepted with bottom-range scores, but in hindsight I don’t think it was a close call. It was the rest of the application that counted.

When students who have very high stats are turned away, it’s because the Barnard admissions committee did not get the sense that those students would be a good fit at Barnard, not because there is anything wrong with their applications. The “fit” part is particularly important because of Barnard’s unique atmosphere – it is a place where a student who is a poor fit can get very unhappy, very fast.

I don’t think its really possible to know all that goes into the decision, but if you want to get some sense of a pattern, I would suggest focusing on the subjective factors.

I’m in Southern California - and I still haven’t gotten anything yet. :(

It generally takes 2-3 days for priority mail to reach all areas of the country – rural areas could take even longer. Saturday delivery is iffy. Basically if the packets went out in the mail late Thursday afternoon, they should reach everyone in the continental US in Monday’s mail, Tuesday at the latest. (Though there is always the potential of a late arriving packet due to damage or mistake in transit).

Anyway… just my 2 cents on the way the US postal system works. Geographical distance from the point of origin is not the only factor, because mail gets routed through major processing centers. So a person who lives in a far-flung urban area may get the package sooner than someone in a suburban or rural area nearer to NY, but with more “stops” along the way for the mail to reach them.

As Calmom said, you cannot just look at the distance you live from Barnard and figure there is any kind of direct relationship to when you will get your notice of admission status. In fact I recall over the years hearing of several who got theirs days later than the majority here on CC. Hang in there!

SO HAPPY. I’d really like to get to know you accepted people! If you’re waitlisted or outright rejected, one thing I’ve learned is everything happens for a reason. Don’t let randomized college admissions determine what you think about yourself. (I got rejected from my state school the weekend before.) You’ll do great wherever you decide to go!
