OFFICIAL, OFFICIAL RD DECISIONS - Barnard '14

<p>Rejected.</p>

<p>I’m devastated.</p>

<p>Did you get your letter or were you just not able to login?</p>

<p>I feel kind of bad… I basically did use Barnard as a backup plan for Columbia… Oh well. Hopefully (if I get into Princeton, Columbia, or off MIT’s waitlist) someone who deserves/wants to go more than I do will get my spot…</p>

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:
Absolutely ecstatic! I live within 2 hours of the city and didn’t get my letter until today, so I was sure I got rejected. I’ve been waitlisted to sooo many schools and had a minor freak-out over the weekend. As I was crying to this boy, he kept saying I still had a shot but I figured I was rejected already. I was already planning my trip to Memphis to a school and I found out I got into Barnard, my #1 school! I’m thrilled beyond belief! I’m so excited to meet everyone =]</p>

<p>Accepted! But I’m deferring a year.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted!!!</p>

<p>Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): math:760 writing:740 reading:750
SAT II: chemistry:780, chinese:760, math2:730, USHistory:700
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): my school doesn’t do a 4.0 scale. I have an average of 87.12, and the average GPA from people in my school who got accepted into Barnard is 87.something
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): no idea sorry. not top 10% though.
AP (place score in parenthesis): Both Englishes(4), Chemistry(5), US History(4), CalcAB(5)
Senior Year Course Load: Advanced Physics(prepares you for the AP C Mechanics exam), Applied Math 2 (goes beyond Calc BC), Latin 3, a lot of amazing electives
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, Silver Presidential Volunteer Service Award</p>

<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Drama(14 productions total), Choir/Voice lessons (Madrigals), Community Service, GSA (Head)
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: 250+ hours with a nonprofit exchange program, 2 weeks at an orphanage in Shanghai
Summer Activities: Community Service, World Science Festival, Entrepreneur’s Class, Finland Exchange funded by the Finnish Parliament, orphanage in Shanghai
Essays: moral decision I had to make with my host family in Finland. It’s pretty decent, but would’ve been better if there hadn’t been the 600 word limit.
Teacher Recommendation: Both pretty amazing.
Counselor Rec: Pretty->very good. She’s my dorm head too so she knows me pretty well.
Additional Rec: None submitted
Interview: I thought it went pretty well.</p>

<p>Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Philosophy
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: small boarding school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Well off enough to not need financial aid. My parents won’t tell me anything beyond that.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Lived in Shanghai for the second half of freshman year, attended a British international school there</p>

<p>Reflection
Strengths: international experience, very good preparation because of the insane academics in my school, huge upward trend in grades, grades reliable in the sense that Barnard knows my school really well, good but not amazing extracurriculars
Weaknesses: pretty mediocre sophomore year because of adjusting to a new school, freshman grades don’t really mean too much because of the switch to a British system, an Asian with my SAT scores kind of throws me into the pile of “oh look another Asian”.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Barnard likes me YAYYY!!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Edinburgh(acceptanced), Georgetown(accepted), Boston College (accepted), Vanderbilt (accepted) UChicago (waitlisted), Northwestern (waitlisted), Middlebury (waitlisted), Columbia (deferred ED), Duke (rejected)
The rest of my list: Brown, Harvard, Tufts
General Comments: I’m seriously considering Barnard over Georgetown because I felt like I belonged at Barnard on tour.</p>

<p>@sjogren What are you doing during your gap year? I’m currently a junior & I’m thinking about doing a gap year after senior yr, especially if I don’t get into one of my top college choices.</p>

<p>@wej ;T__T;
I’ve never talked to you or anything but I know how much you wanted to get in :frowning:
I really hope you end up loving whichever college you decide to go to… best wishes!</p>

<p>@soshi: I’m doing a Rotary Youth Exchange to Brazil. A lot of people that I’ve talked to that have done a gap year really seem to enjoy it and benefit from it too. They say it’s kind of a time to reevaluate your life (pardon the cliche :)). What are you thinking about doing?</p>

<p>I got waitlisted…duh…</p>

<p>same as soshi, I hope you will get into a great school, wej</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>Well, that’s the best illustration of “Tufts syndrome” that I’ve ever seen. ;)</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>Haha oh well! I probably wouldn’t have gone either way… I’m stuck between Barnard, JHU, and Princeton right now. Not sure which one I want to go to…</p>

<p>Well, even if you opt for Princeton or JHU in the end… I think its pretty cool that you are seriously considering Barnard but are turning Columbia down. (and Yale, and Harvard). </p>

<p>I have to say that you’ve got really great options. Take your time this month to weigh them carefully. (Although of course you are in the situation where you can’t really go wrong with any choice you make).</p>

[li] Gender: Well, it’s a women’s college…[/li][/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:
I was expecting to get in, since my test scores were well above their averages, my gpa was about average, and i’m from an underrepresented region (only 8% from midwest and southwest combined.)<br>
I was deferred EA at MIT then rejected RA. Also accepted to Penn State Honors College , McGill University, and some crappy backups.</p>

<p>An article about this years’ class in the Columbia Spectator:</p>

<p>[Barnard</a> admissions rate drops to 26.5 percent](<a href=“http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2010/04/05/barnard-admissions-rate-drops-265-percent]Barnard”>Barnard admissions rate drops to 26.5 percent)</p>

<p>Way to go, ladies!</p>

<p>Uh oh… that’s not good news for me, assuming that the trend continues. Haha but yeah, congrats to everyone!</p>
