OFFICIAL One-Year UC Transfers

Hey everyone! Couldn’t find a thread like this, so I’ma kick this one open! This thread is to help out one-year transfer students to the UCs (to help answer each other’s questions and possible concerns).

I’m aware that traditionally, it takes two-years to transfer to a UC. But a lot of students enter their freshman year at CC as sophomores now 'days with AP credits, or lots of dual CC credit (or both). For example, of my group of six friends I entered CC with, four of us are doing it in one year! Three of us came in with substantial AP units, and the fourth took 60 units during high school and all of his pre-reqs for Poli-Sci (all four of us are Poli-Sci) and is now taking a year off for internships.

I’m a student at Moorpark College
I applied to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, and UCSB.
My major is Political Science.
My Fall GPA is a 4.0 in 15 units.
Major ECs include: founder and president of my school’s third largest club, camp counselor, creative writing specialist all summer at a local Jewish summer camp, and that I write lots of screenplays (4).
My PS was rated 9/10 by a UCLA rep.
IGETC: will be completed.
Prereqs: done for SD and Berkeley. Will be done for UCLA. Missing microecon for SB.
APs: 29.4 units. Summer: 0 units. Fall: 15 units. Spring: 18.5 units.

Anyone else one-year? Post your stats! It could also potentially help future applicants, because it could show that it’s possible.

Hoping for a valuable thread! :slight_smile: :)) :smiley: 8-> B-)

Obviously your 4.0 is great, but it’s not based off many units. I’m not sure if that matters or not but that’s just something that stuck out to me.

I’m not well versed in one year transfers or political science but your stats seem strong.

@briank82 whether you’re right or wrong, please don’t respond. I realize you were called out of nowhere because of circumstances that occurred few days past on the Berkeley transfer thread, but let’s let this end here.

This is just some Internet forum (hell, this ain’t even YouTube, it’s just some forum on college admission…). Be real men in real life, don’t try to be men here. On the other hand, if this were a bar fight, I’d ask for nothing less than the bloodiest of fist fights in the back alley, lol.

In Berkeley’s transfer webinar, they said that being a one-year transfer will not be held against you. A 4.0 is still a 4.0 to them, basically.

It’s not incredibly unreasonable to think otherwise, in my opinion.

That being said, @solostish - I’m sure you’ll get in to all schools you applied to. What’s your first choice? Berkeley?

OH SH!T I WAS THE ONE WHO ASKED THAT QUESTION @goldenclub

And hopefully! That would be insane! In high school, I finished with a 2.8. I was just a solid test taker (incredibly lazy). So to go to Cal next year would be pure craziness.

Berkeley > UCLA > UCSD > UCSB

I might decide on UCLA, though, if I have the option, because I’m pursuing stand up.

What about you, @goldencub ? Are you applying this year? Or are you already at Cal?

@solostish I’m applying now as well. Same story here - my lowest GPA was a 0.73, and I graduated HS with a 2.9, I believe. Didn’t even apply to any colleges my senior year, opting to go to my local CC instead. The CC system is such a blessing.

My top choice is Cal, by far, but it’ll be a tough decision between Cal and UCLA (naturally). Either way, I’ve taken one course at Berkeley, and I love the atmosphere / quality of education / campus, etc. - so Berkeley really is the natural choice.

April is going to be nerve-wracking as hell. Best of luck, but I doubt you’ll need it.

@solostish oh!

Were you asking them tons of private questions? I know I did, they were really helpful.

@goldenclub My questions were basically all about IGETC and maybe one on the personal statement. I was forming my spring schedule at the time, and I trying to make sure everything worked perfectly!

What about you?

One year transfers unite! Glad to see there’s more of us, haha. I’ve got 29.3 semester units from my AP tests, so looks like OP beat me by 0.1, darn. Really hoping to get into UC Santa Barbara.

What’s worrying me, however, is whether or not I’m going to take 2 or 3 years. I’m 17 at the moment, fresh out of high school, and I don’t know how I feel about graduating college at 19. Some of my apprehension is influenced by the desire for that “romantic college experience” that I perceive my peers at UCs to be experiencing right now, but I dunno. I suppose that’s a question I have to tackle once I actually get accepted.

AP Units: 29.3 Fall: 16 units Spring: 16 units

Major: Political Science
UC-Transferable GPA: 3.6
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done after Spring Semester
Major Prep: 6/7 done after Spring Semester is over. One’s covered by an AP test, so that’s nice.
ECs: A bunch of clubs from High School related to my major.
President of the Debate Team.
I volunteer at local Debate leagues to judge and critique students so they can improve.
PS: One of the better things I’ve written, so probably 7-8/10.
TAG: Not eligible for TAG since the 30 units I had were from AP tests, not actual classes.
Applied to: UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara

@HeideggerNSartre You should get into UCSB. I’m sure you have the stats for it!!

And same! I might want to take 3 years, but it’d be so cool to say I graduated from UCLA at 19. It sounds hella prestigious. Also, from what I’ve read, it’s required at the UCs to take a minimum amount of units to show that you’re on track to graduating on time. I think you’d have to petition to do a three year graduation track (10 units a Qrtr/Semester).

@solostish Yeah, I’ve read that you need to be on a specific track, but then again, one could take classes that don’t necessarily count towards your major–in my case a Philosophy class or a ballroom dancing class or something.

The only problem I could see is if I have a cap on the amount of units I could take that aren’t related to my major.

@Heidegger The good news is that ap credit does not count toward unit caps, and since most of us on this thread are transferring with a lot of ap credit, unit caps are less of a problem. With that said, I think I would want to take three years at a UC as well, I would graduate at 20 and that just seems too early to start my professional life.

@Pastas so I could double major and minor in three years? Or single major and minor in two? That sounds like a good deal either way.

@solostish I’m not 100% sure what i said was correct, but i’m fairly confident about it. I guess double majoring would involve looking at the department’s website at the school you plan to attend and see how many upperdivision units it takes to earn a bachelors for that major. So whether you can fit X number of majors and X number of minors is entirely dependent on major, as some take more upper division units than others to complete. Of course, I’m not a counselor so take my word for what it’s worth.
