Jrpar: We also visited Colgate during a sloppy mid-March snow storm! I guess you figure that if your kid likes a school in that sort of revolting weather, it's a good omen. Right now there's about an inch of sparkly snow on campus. My daughter did not apply anywhere ED, but throughout the process Colgate was one of her favorites. The academics are really top-drawer -- stimulating, accessible profs who are there because they love teaching undergraduates. We were at a recent luncheon with President Chopp, who told us that last year they managed to hire 3 of 4 candidates who were choosing between Colgate and Princeton! My daughter has a tight circle of friends already (though she does miss her high school group) and she's gotten involved in several activities, mostly community service stuff. It's definitely a socially extroverted, active student body. But contary to a stereotype that's sometimes perpetuated on these boards (including by some parents whose opinions I otherwise value a great deal) the school is NOT utterly awash in alcohol and hopelessly spoiled rich kids. There is drinking (my daughter is not a teetotaler) and there is money, but no more than at many other fine LACs and smallish universities in the Northeast. There's actually a slightly more eclectic student body than at some of the other LACs my daughter considered -- maybe because Colgate is on the large size for an LAC. In any case, these kids are working too hard to spend all their time partying!

wjb - thank you for the insights! My son would start there tomorrow if he could. When he comes down from his current "high", I'll have to try to refocus him on high school...

I'm also fairly new on this board and would like to offer my congratulations to all. What impressive outcomes! I truly hope all of you seasoned veterans will stick around to help out the current juniors (and their parents) next year!

These are some great acceptances. It's amazing to see all of these talented kids. But the thrill is tempered a bit by some of the discussion in the other groups from people who may be equally talented that have been deferred or rejected. Some of the comments are heartbreaking, such as this one, from a person rejected from Yale:

"Frustrated and angry and hurt and feeling helpless and inferior and stupid."

And this is from a bright 17 year old. It makes me feel sad that some of these kids have reactions like that when there are many schools that would be a great fit. One of the best threads I've seen in months on CC is the one from people who were deferred of rejected last year and found happiness at other schools. Some were probably much happier at the new school than they would have been if their EA/ED decision had been an acceptance.

Wow, there are even more now that I must have missed. I am sorry to congratulate you all in a list as each one is very special on its own merits...but JrPar, Little Mom, Cookiemom and WSox....Woot Woot as the kids might put it! Such FANTASTIC outcomes. Much joy on this thread, I can see! Sounds like each of these kids knew what she/he wanted, went after it, had what it takes, and was lucky to get in when these schools are mucho selective. What a bunch of talented young folks.

NCMom....my D's five friends who heard from NYU ED last Saturday and who all got in, all got into Tisch, sorry I did not mention that. The other four friends are still waiting to hear, also for Tisch. My D is a RD applicant to Tisch. I would love to say that maybe my child's path will cross with your child's but well, it is FAR too soon to tell given she has not heard from any colleges ;-) and we are hoping something works out in her favor. In terms of Gallatin, the girl I interviewed for another college yesterday, just so happens to have applied ED to Gallatin but had not heard as of yesterday but it is not like I will ever hear her outcome as she is not anyone we know but I was assigned to interview her. The topic only came up because somehow as soon as she got here, something came up that she is friends with a close friend of my D's here in our region who just got into Tisch, but I did not know that and so NYU and ED came up and that is when she mentioned it.

Anywho.....all the best to your kids.....what a talented bunch of children represented on this forum....amazing.
Susan

Digimedia...I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments regarding some of the rejected/deferred students' thoughts or attitudes, quite disconcerting. I thank my lucky stars that my D last year at this time in the EA round (deferred at Yale) did not react that way at all. I totally can understand disappointment but the rest of the sentiments by posters such as the one you quoted are truly too bad.

Susan

Congrats to all the ones I missed!

Musicmom758--my S is a freshman at Columbia, from NJ. He's insanely happy there. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have.

Mom55--my D just graduated from Wes. Loved it; as above, if you have any qustions, I'd be happy to help out.

S lucky to be accepted by Yale

Chinaman:
Congratulations! That post of yours should read 'Yale lucky my son accepted them', no? I can imagine that proud parental smile on your face - go celebrate!

Chinaman!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!! I was logging on at various points last night looking for news from you about your son and Yale. Wooooohooooo. You must be so proud. Congratulations.

Kinshasa--I work at BU, so if you have any questions about Boston or the University, please let me know.

Texas137--tough choice b/w MIT and CalTech. Both are good schools, and my H's faculty advisor when he was at MIT (David Baltimore) is now prez at CalTech. MIT is larger and offers a more varied UG program. Good luck with the choice!

Congratulations and Best Wishes to ALL the Parents and Students in the Class of 2009!

thanks, Yes I am proud not that he got in Yale, but he worked hard. :). Momsdream he has volunteered all his life, he is planning to take an interm year off. But there are some factors that are complicating it. Let us see.
